** The OFFICIAL NFL Mock Draft Thread **
The draft order for the top nineteen has been set save for a coin flip to determine who will pick 3rd/4th between Tampa Bay and Cleveland.
1) Oakland 2) Detroit 3) Tampa Bay/Cleveland 4) Cleveland/Tampa Bay 5) Arizona 6) Washington 7) Minnesota 8) Houston 9) Miami 10) Atlanta 11) San Francisco 12) Buffalo 13) St. Louis 14) Carolina 15) Pittsburgh 16) Green Bay 17) Jacksonville 18) Cincinnati 19) Tennessee 20) TBA 21) Denver 22-32) TBA That info can be found here. Some of the top prospects follow. Feel free to submit your own scouting report. Brady Quinn, QB, Notre Dame, Sr., 6-4 230lbs. Great arm, outstanding accuracy, pretty good agility, ideal body for an NFL QB. Very intelligent, humble and hard-working. Basically no weaknesses. Joe Thomas, OT, Wisconsin, Sr., 6-8 300 lbs. Calvin Johnson, WR, Georgia Tech, Jr., 6-4 230 lbs. Gaines Adams, DE, Clemson, Sr., 6-5 230 lbs. Adrian Peterson, RB, Oklahoma, Jr., 6-2, 218 lbs. Alan Branch, DT, Michigan, Jr., 6-6, 320 lbs. Leon Hall, CB, Michigan, Sr., 5-11, 193 lbs. Dwayne Jarrett, WR, USC, Jr., 6-5, 210 lbs. LaRon Landry, S, LSU, Sr., 6-2, 190 lbs. Ted Ginn, Jr., WR, Ohio State, Jr., 6-0, 175 lbs. Quentin Moses, DE, Georgia, Sr., 6-5, 248 lbs. Marshawn Lynch, RB, California, Jr., 5-11, 205 lbs. Troy Smith, QB, Ohio State, Sr., 6-1, 215 lbs. Brian Brohm, QB, Louisville, Jr., 6-4, 225 lbs. Patrick Willis, ILB, Ole Miss, Sr., 6-2, 230 lbs. Paul Posluszny, OLB, Penn St, Sr., 6-2, 230 lbs. Quinn Pitcock, DT, Ohio State, Sr., 6-3, 295 lbs. LaMarr Woodley, DE, Michigan, Sr., 6-2, 270 lbs. 1) Oakland - Brady Quinn. Raiders really need a franchise QB b/c Aaron Brooks and Andrew Walter aren't getting it done. Their defense has been underrated and was not really the problem this season. They also need help on the O-Line but Quinn is probably the player they covet. 2) Detroit - The Lions might be interested in Brian Brohm depending on how he does at the scouting combine. They may attempt to trade down in an effort to draft him. Or they could take Adrian Peterson or Joe Thomas. Hard to say with the Lions. Taking Calvin Johnson wouldn't be a total shock either. 3) Cleveland/Tampa Bay - The Browns reportedly are very high on Michigan's Alan Branch to clog up the middle. They also need a RB so drafting Peterson wouldn't be a surprise. Tampa has an aging defense that sorely needs an infusion of young talent. Look for them to draft Branch or Gaines Adams from Clemson. Tampa may also take Calvin Johnson as Joey Galloway is getting long in the tooth. 5) Arizona - The Cardinals will almost certainly take Joe Thomas if he falls to them b/c they have an abysmal offensive line. 6) Washington - The Redskins biggest weakness is defensive line as they were last in the NFL in sacks and interceptions. They get almost no pressure on the quarterback and will take Alan Branch or Gaines Adams if one of them falls to #6. If neither are available, the Skins might trade down as they only have one first-day pick. Trading down might be quite feasible if Calvin Johnson were still on the board. 7) Minnesota - The Vikings would almost definitely take Calvin Johnson if he somehow fell this far. If not they could take Dwayne Jarrett. 8) Houston - The Texans need a RB and would probably take Peterson if he fell this far. Marshawn Lynch is probably high on their board as well. 9) Miami - The Dolphins are getting old on defense and could take LaMarr Woodley or Quentin Moses. 10) Atlanta - Perhaps Dwayne Jarrett would be the pick here or an offensive lineman such as Jake Long from Michigan or Justin Blalock from Texas. Feedback/discussion of picks would be welcomed. Let's use this thread in the coming weeks and leading up to April's draft. |
Re: ** The OFFICIAL NFL Mock Draft Thread **
u think jarret is better than calvin johnson?
|
Re: ** The OFFICIAL NFL Mock Draft Thread **
I think Johnson just showed what he can do if he's thrown even a DECENT ball. If he played with NFL caliber QBs like Jarrett has it wouldn't even be a discussion.

Re: ** The OFFICIAL NFL Mock Draft Thread **
Fixed. CJ is in there now.

Re: ** The OFFICIAL NFL Mock Draft Thread **
Is Joe Thomas worth trading up to say #2-4 for?
Not sure if he would actually drop to #5. It would be sweet if Cards splurged on Leonard Davis with intention of moving him back to originally guard position. Then draft Thomas to take his place at Tackle. |
Re: ** The OFFICIAL NFL Mock Draft Thread **
Not sure if he's worth it, but a lot of mock drafts had Arizona taking Thomas at #2 about a month ago, before they won 3 of their last 5 to close the season.
|
Re: ** The OFFICIAL NFL Mock Draft Thread **
A few guys you left out who will probably be top 20 picks (*=underclassmen):
*Reggie Nelson, S/CB, Florida-Top DB in the draft, may be moved to CB in the NFL because of his weight. Ballhawk, Good in coverage, great hitter. *Jake Long, T, Michigan-Should be a top 10 pick if he comes out. Depending on how players fall, could go as high as TB or Cle. *Jamarcus Russell, QB, LSU-He's flying up the charts, could go as high as #2 to Detroit. Personally, I have Quinn, Brohm and John Beck, BYU ranked higher. *Frank Okam, DT, Texas-May stay in school, would probably go 10-20 if he comes out. Justin Blalock, G, Texas-Can play guard or tackle. Will probably be an NFL guard and the first one drafted. Antoine Cason, CB, Arizona-One of 6 CB's with similiar value (Hall; *Darelle Revis, Pitt; Simeon Castle, Alabama; Marcus McCaulley, Fresno St; Daymeion Hughes, Cal) who could go anywhere from #10-#40 Quinn Pitcock has probably fallen out of the first round. |
Re: ** The OFFICIAL NFL Mock Draft Thread **
IMO, Joe Thomas is the best player in the draft. Definitley worth trading up for.
I think the Lions win yesterday was a blessing in disguse allowing them to draft Thomas without the fear/scrutiny of passing up Brady Quinn. |

Would it be a bad idea for the Raiders to take Thomas at #1 and take a shot at a player like Stanton or Tate, or any QB not named Quinn or Brohm?

Re: ** The OFFICIAL NFL Mock Draft Thread **
My thinking was Thomas at LT and Gallery at LG(if you could put a man his size there, i dont see why not). That would just pad up a side of the line wouldn't it?

Re: ** The OFFICIAL NFL Mock Draft Thread **
Smith doesn't go first round except as a Matt Jones level project.

T. Smith goes by the end of the second round for sure. Probably not the first round though.

Houston needs a qb

Re: ** The OFFICIAL NFL Mock Draft Thread **
My top 15 Propsects with a quick scouting report/bio (*=Undeclared underclassmen):
1.Joe Thomas, OT, Wisconsin-Will be an All-Pro LT for many years. Thomas is huge, 6' 8" with long arms. Locks up defenders pass or run blocking. Great foot work, moves very well. Athletic enough that he played a few plays at TE and DT as a Freshman. Tore ACL during last year's Capital One Bowl. Recovered and played well in 2006. 2.*Calvin Johnson, WR, Georgia Tech-Incredible physical speciman. 6' 5" 235, reportedly has a 45" vertical and can run a sub 4.5 40. Great body control and route runner. Best WR in the country, had 26 TD's in 3 years despite the yellow jackets trouble at QB. 3.Brady Quinn, QB, Notre Dame-Most polished college QB since Peyton Manning. Can make every throw. Solid mechanics, arm strength and accuracy. Very smart, reads field well and has great pocket pressence. Is fast enough to scramble although he prefers not to. Playing under Charlie Weiss will not take him long to adjust to NFL offenses. 4.*Adrian Peterson, RB, Oklahoma-Big strong back who has been a workhorse for Oklahoma. Very quick with good instincts. Can run between the tackles or on the outside. Has been injured twice in 3 college seasons. Was never utilitzed as a pass catcher at Oklahoma. 5.Gaines Adams, DE, Clemson-Great pass rusher, 14.5 sacks in '06 despite facing frequent double teams. Not just a speed rusher, has shown a variety of moves. Some concerns that he may be a tweener. Should be able to play OLB in the 3-4, but has never played standing up. Needs to add weight to play DE in the 4-3, has the build that should allow additional weight. Was not great stopping the run. Their are also some concenrs on his endurance as he was on the sideline in some key situations. 6.*Alan Branch, DT, Michigan-Huge body, 6' 6" 320 and athletic enough that he played running back in high school. Great combination of speed, size and strength. Should be able to play either position in the 3-4 or DT in the 4-3. Not the most explosive player but can get around blocks. 7.*Dwayne Jarrett, WR, USC-Big athletic WR. Very good at going and getting the ball. Very good route runner, will go over the middle and make tough catches in traffic. Has played at a high level in a pro style offense for 3 years. Despite his size, is not the most physical reciever. 8.*Brian Brohm, QB, Louisville-Great arm, drafted by the Rockies as a pitcher out of high school. Great arm strength and accuracy. Throws darts all over the field. Good pocket presence can run if neccessary. Plays well under pressure, was on the cover of SI as a high schooler in 2002. Tore his ACL in 2005, broke his hand in 2006. 9.*Antone Cason, CB, Arizona-Started every game and has played every snap for 3 years at corner, did not redshirt. Was a shut down corner in a pass happy conference. Very good run stopper as well. 10.Mashawn Lynch, RB, California-Junior who has declared for the draft. Very talented do everything back. Fast enough to break long runs outside, strong enough to run between the tackles. Has very good pass catching ability. Has experience in pass protection in a pro offense. 11.*Ted Ginn JR, WR, Ohio State-May be the fastest player in the draft. Quickness and acceleration are phenomenal. Route running and hands have improved but still need some work. Is still inconsistent at WR. Great return man. Still on the small side at 6' 0". Recruited to Ohio St to play cornerback, probably could play that in the NFL. Great potential. 12.Paul Poslusnky, LB, Penn St-Being the all-time leading tackler at "Linebacker U" says a lot. Only the second player to win the Bednarik award twice. Great instincts, very good at following the play. Could teach a tackiling clinic. Excellent form and finishes hits. Above average in coverage, moves well in space. Is quicker than fast, not the most athletic linebacker you'll see. Would have been a first round pick last year but returned for his senior year after injuring his knee in the Orange Bowl. 13.*Reggie Nelson, S/CB, Florida-Ballhawk and a big hitter. Very fast and aggressive. Stock has soared the last few months as he's played great in the Florida secondary. Has shown great coverage ability may move from safety to CB in the NFL. Some concern that he may be too light to play safety in the NFL. Is very physical and plays much bigger than 190 lbs. 14.LaRon Landry, S, LSU-Very fundamentally sound and very athletic. Can do it all, great blitzer, big hitter, good instincts. Not as flashy as Reggie Nelson but is bigger and has made his fair share of big plays/hits, just ask Alabama. 15.Justin Blalock, G/T, Texas-Has played guard and tackle at Texas, will probably be an NFL guard. Run blocking ability and size will justify a guard being selected so high. Very good at using his hands and gaining leverage at the point of attack. |

All,
Al Davis has a long history of refusing to draft QBs and instead trying to find one through free agency. The most recent example was last year when he passed over Matt Leinart and Jay Cutler for Huff. In the free agency era, I don't think he has ever taken a QB early in the draft- EVER. |
Re: ** The OFFICIAL NFL Mock Draft Thread **
assani,
who should i prey the vikes get and who will they actually get? |
Re: ** The OFFICIAL NFL Mock Draft Thread **
A quick top 10 attempt....
1. Tampa Bay(trade with Oakland): Brady Quinn, TB needs an improvement at QB. 2. Detroit: Joe Thomas- After taking skill position players for years early, they start filling in the trenches 3. Cleveland: Adrian Peterson- seems like a perfect fit, no? 4. Oakland: Calvin Johnson- trade down and still get the guy they want 5. Miami(trade with Arizona): JaMarcus Russell- hes a workout warrior that could easily rocket up the draft charts after the combine. Miami moves up in order to leapfrog Minnesota who has the 7th pick 6. Washington: Gaines Adams- If hes there, no way does Washington pass on him 7. Minnesota: Leon Hall- They think about Brian Brohm and Dwayne Jarrett but decide that they want to build with defense first. 8. Houston: Levi Brown- They need o-line help in the worst way 9. Arizona: Alan Branch- too talented to fall much further 10. Atlanta: Dwayne Jarrett- Again just seems like a perfect fit |

assani, who should i prey the vikes get and who will they actually get? [/ QUOTE ]I'm really not sure. I know they have a horrible pass D and I know that Smoot has been a big disappointment, so thats why I went with CB Leon Hall. Unlike most teams, the Vikings are actually pretty set in the trenches, so they're not in horrible shape. Because of that though I don't think they'll want to enter rebuilding mode, so I think they may try to address QB/WR through free agency rather than try to develop kids in the draft. A lot really depends on the combine, but I really think they'll be targetting some help for their secondary. Guys like Hall, Laron Landry, Reggie Nelson, and Darrelle Revis all seem like decent fits. |
Re: ** The OFFICIAL NFL Mock Draft Thread **
Some other notable players that I didn't include in my top 10:
Ted Ginn- I'm not as high on him as most, but I could see St Louis taking him at #13 even though I don't think hes the 13th best player. Hell I could even see Atlanta taking him at #10. I don't think he'll fall any further than Tennesee at #19 at the very latest. Brian Brohm- I'm just not that big on him either. In today's NFL teams don't want to rebuild, and I don't think that Brohm is a player that can be a quality starter right away. If he declares I could see him falling to KC at #24 or Baltimore(I really hope not as I kinda like Boller) at #30. On the high side, Carolina could fall in love with him at #13. Marshawn Lynch- Could go as high as #8 to Houston imo, although I think that would be a mistake on their part(I'm a big advocate of getting RBs through trade/FA rather than the draft). Green Bay at #16 is more likely imo. Troy Smith: Baltimore or Chicago are possibilities at the end of the first round, although I think both would be much better served to draft to win NOW. I'm not sure who does and doesn't have a 2nd round pick, but assuming that every team does I could see any of the top 4 teams(Oakland, Detroit, Cleveland, TB) taking him at the top of the 2nd. On the high side, the big 3 QBs may be gone before Jacksonille(#17) or KC(#24) pick and he could go there. |
Re: ** The OFFICIAL NFL Mock Draft Thread **
btw take everything I say(and what most people say now) with a grain of pepper....its so early that I'm just learning about these players now and I'm sure I'll change my mind 100 times before the draft. I'll have a much better mock worked out a week or two before the draft.
As many of you know, I don't follow college football all that closely, so I really don't know a ton about these players yet. I follow the combines and scouting reports a lot though, so I'll learn a lot in the coming months. |

odds that one of these guys drops to 22? [/ QUOTE ] Not very good right now, but the Senior Bowl/Combine/Workouts always shakes things up. I don't think Poslunsky falls past #15 Pittsburgh, some teams earlier will have interest. ATL, SF, STL, CAR, DEN would all have interest in Nelson/Landry. |

Now I do agree that they could use some playmakers on offense, but I think that they can contend next year for two reasons(they are good in the trenches, they play in the NFC). And since QBs and WRs usually take a few years to develop(and since they already have prospects in QB Jackson and WR Williamson) I think they'd rather address those needs in free agency. |
Re: ** The OFFICIAL NFL Mock Draft Thread **
My top 5(if cleveland wins coin flip)
Oakland: Calvin Johnson-replaces Randy Moss/ AL Davis doesn't like to pick QB's Detroit: Brady Quinn-Obv. need a QB Cleveland: Joe Thomas-Definite O-line upgrade. Tampa Bay: JaMarcus Russell-Very Athletic/ Tampa needs QB help. Arizona: Leon Hall-Help a bad Pass defense |

Re: ** The OFFICIAL NFL Mock Draft Thread **
I believe you that Howie said that, but I really doubt that Al Davis would be telling Howie Long his true thoughts on this year's prospects and then being perfectly fine with Howie Long sharing those thoughts with millions of people watching. I'm sure I could dig up a ton of great quotes about how the Texans front office praised Reggie Bush at this time last year. Maybe Davis really is in love with Quinn, maybe not. But I can guarantee you that hes not going to be leaking his true thoughts to the media anytime soon. Hes been around for a long time and he knows how the "draft gamesmanship" works.
The current era of NFL free agency began in 1989(Plan B from 1989-1992, the Plan A beginning in 1993). Since then, Al Davis has never taken a QB in the first round, and its well documented that he has a specific philosphy of choosing to go after veteran QBs in free agency rather than through the draft. Could that change this year? Perhaps, but it certainly looked like Oakland was a perfect fit for a QB last year when Leinart fell to them and they passed on him then. Again I'm not saying what I think Oakland SHOULD do, I'm saying what I think they WILL do. |
