Who was your favorite scrub player when you were young?
Who did you really like when you were young.
Only rule, no saying Yaz, or Jim Palmer or some other stud, it has to be a player who was decent or worse. For me it was always Steve Sax. I even got my grandma to buy me his Dodgers jersey. Must have been 1987 or so. |

Re: Who was your favorite scrub player when you were young?
My two favorite players on the 1993 Phillies were Wes Chamberlain and Mickey Morandini.
I remember the Phillies re-acquiring Morandini from the Cubs for cash in maybe 1997, and thinking he was the missing piece necessary for the Phils to finally get back to the playoffs |

One time he was on Jay Leno and they asked him what his favorite food was:
"Double Cheeseburgers with extra mayonnaise." |
Re: Who was your favorite scrub player when you were young?
Baseball: Randy Bush, backup outfielder for the Twins in the late 80s early 90s. Played with the Twins for 12 straight seasons and never had more then 394 ABs. His best year was 1991, the year the Twins won their 2nd WS, he only batted 165 times and had an OPS+ of 140 (OPS = .886)
In football my favorite, still one of my all-time favorite players, was Chris Walsh. He is a white WR who played for the Vikings from 1994-2002 pretty much playing exclusively on special teams. Over those years he amassed an amazing 67 receptions! His big year was in 2000 when he caught 18 passes in 12 games for 191 yards. Walsh's problem was that he was at the wrong position. He had good hands but he wasn't the fastest guy around. I think he might have been a good SS because at 194, the weight at which he played receiver, he was one of the hardest hitters in the NFL. He was a special teams super star, the Vikings special teams captain for 5+ years. In a 1997 (I think) Vikings year in review tape, when they had a top 5 hits of the year, Walsh was #1 and #2. Both hits came on offense, in the same game against the same CB. He knocked the guy out of the game for a few series in the 1st quarter and did the same thing again in the 3rd. |

Bill Gullickson when he was with the Expos in the early-mid 80's. He had a couple of decent seasons, and played in the majors for 10+ years, but was never really a star. He was my hero when I was 10 years old, though.
Dave Martinez of the early 90's Expos. He always seemed to get a timely hit, and hussled his butt off. I always felt that he was good enough to be an every day player, but never really got the chance. He played into his early 40's, but was never recognized as anything more than a "role player". |

The thing he was good at was not striking out. |

I used to love Otis Nixon for the Braves. Plus he's from a town about an hour away from where I grew up.

My memory is faulty, and I was basing it almost entirely on his years with the Expos when he was first breaking into the league. From his stats, it appears that he was an every day player with the White Sox, and then for a year with the Devil Rays. He was a poor man's Wade Boggs for most of his career -- fairly high BA, but no power and no speed. His BA was not as high as Boggs', and he didn't walk anywhere near enough (as you pointed out). He played for 4 teams in 2000 -- one of which was the Blue Jays, which I imagine is how you came to see him play. |

Manute Bol. I could never get enough of seeing that guy play. I loved the space hook, and loved him firing 3's even more.

Re: Who was your favorite scrub player when you were young?
Baseball player was Steve Sax. I thought he was going to be a Hall of Famer.
Football player was Jim Burt. Always wanted to be a nose tackle because of him. |

Not a very good player, but a riot to watch. My favorite Manute Move was the defensive rebound, put ball through the legs (by lifting leg, not dribbling) then firing the outlet pass up court. Remember when Henry Rodgriguez was smacking homers in '96 and the local press nicknamed him "O'Henry" and the fans would throw O'Henry chocolate bars on the field? Good times, good times. |
