How often is the term \"professional poker player\" BS?
I was out at a club with a friend last week- a nice guy but pretty much a loser as far as any career prospects. Still lives with his parents. He's a typical casino poker player- decent but nothing special. I've taken more of his money than he's taken of mine.
Anyway, we were both talking to girls when suddenly I heard him blurt out "I'm a professional poker player." That was the last thing I was expecting to hear come flying out of his mouth, and I found it instantly hilarious. But I always try to be a good wingman, so I turned away to stifle my laughter. Except the girl I was talking to saw my face getting red trying not to laugh and then she started laughing. And then I couldn't help myself and me we were both convulsing with laughter. My friend was not happy- understandably - but it was one of those situations where I just couldn't help laughing. It occurred to me later that being a "professional poker player" is the perfect cover for the slacker lifestyle. It's even got a little air of glamour to it. I wonder what percentage of people who claim to be pros actually make a reliable living solely at poker. |

Re: How often is the term \"professional poker player\" BS?
I know I don't . . . but it doesn't stop me from saying I am a pro!
This is actually BS, I am married so I have nobody left to impress, hehe. |

Re: How often is the term \"professional poker player\" BS?
What's funny is that I actually do make a living solely from poker, but whenever I meet a non-poker player, the conversation usually goes like this:
person: so, what do you do for a living? me: I'm a professional poker player person: oh... you make money doing that? |

Re: How often is the term \"professional poker player\" BS?
Saying you're a professional poker player is like tattooing an L on your head.
|
Re: How often is the term \"professional poker player\" BS?
I think this was a cool thing to say back in 2004, but after two years people have had enough time to notice that most of the people saying this are just full of crap.

Re: How often is the term \"professional poker player\" BS?
I expressly don't say it despite living off my poker income for a few years now. It's ridiculous to hear the phrase said outloud. FWIW, I'm self-employed in the financial risk/money management industry.

Re: How often is the term \"professional poker player\" BS?
God I hate the "but how much do you lose" and trying to explain what I mean by "no.. I mean... this is my net profit... this is the money I MADE" to which they once again repeat, "but how much did you lose" AGHHHHHHHHHHHH I can't explain it!!!

Re: How often is the term \"professional poker player\" BS?
Whenever someone says I'm a professional player I always try and correct them and tell them I'm really not that good. I hate talking about poker to strangers and don't understand why people bother trying. 99% of the time it just makes me want to smash someone in the face.

Say you are visiting a friend in BFE (of course you are visiting because no pro really lives in BFE) and you introduce yourself as a pro poker player. Any prospective game that you were going to play is now less juicy than it was before. Either you won't be invited to play there or ever one will be trying to "show up the pro". Either way is not an ideal situation. |
Re: How often is the term \"professional poker player\" BS?
I must just know unusually reasonable people. Except for my wife's family, I have none of these problems. I don't go out of my way to tell people what I do, but it comes up sometimes, and my friends and my wife's friends all know. When it comes up I get intelligent questions, people think it's pretty cool, but mostly because it's flexible and I work for myself and obviously enjoy it.
I think lying about it to cover being a slacker is retarded, unless you're doing it to get chicks, in which case it's a little pathetic but whatever as long as it works. Maybe there's a difference between being 26 and 20 on this issue. The people I know know I'm not a bull shitter so they assume whatever I'm doing is legit and give it respect. My mother in law is an idiot though, and extremely judgmental, so I am familiar with the possible issues. |

So not better at all then. And who cares what people do for a living, as long as they're making cash and happy? [ QUOTE ] 'Personal Equity Trader'/'Equity Analyst' FTW [/ QUOTE ] And this sort of rubbish as well. It's like calling bin men "refuse coordination specialists" or some other bull. Just tell it like it is: "right now, I play poker for a living. Yes I make good money and enjoy my life. Thanks for asking." or something like that. And perhaps be civil when people who don't know anything about poker ask retarded questions rather than belittling them (not aimed at you, just a general observation) either to their face or on an internet forum? But then I haven't met these incredibly ignorant arses who you all apparently have to deal with every day. Perhaps I'd get annoyed at them as well. [ QUOTE ] I just tell them I play poker. I get a lot of questions. I deal with it. [/ QUOTE ] Yeah. This. |
