smash brothers 64: best character?
Recently my friends and I have gotten re-obsessed with smash brothers on the nintendo 64. Let me first say that none of us are experts by any means but a few of us are pretty decent. I choose to play kirby but have lately been dominating and my friends have become convinced that Kirby gives me an unfair advantage in the game.
I'm curious, is there any way I can convince them that Kirby is not the best character? I don't feel like he necessarily is. Who is the best character? |
Re: smash brothers 64: best character?
captain falcon by far, then kirby
|
Re: smash brothers 64: best character?
kirby is up there, maybe even number 2. pikachu is number 1, and it's not close. we've been over this a few times in here. fox is pretty good, as is ness (though exploitable) and jigglypuff. don't ever be link.

Re: smash brothers 64: best character?
pika or ness are probably the two best characters for expert play.
i always had fun as samus and won a decent amount. |
Re: smash brothers 64: best character?
IIRC, Captain Falcon was a lightning bolt in the original.
|
Re: smash brothers 64: best character?
I'm a big fan of Fox
Can block thrown items, and reflect them back Has that sweet gat Very quick Good up B, and other attacks |
Re: smash brothers 64: best character?
From best to worst, at the pro level
Pikachu Kirby Ness Fox Captain Falcon Jigglypuff Mario Yoshi DK Luigi Samus Link But overall they are pretty balanced. |
Re: smash brothers 64: best character?
Man, we should have a 2+2 smash throwdown.
I'm a kirby man. I can't play as pikachu well but it's the only character that ever stands a chance against me. I've played a good number of people and only one person gives me a real fight, and he plays as kirby. |
Re: smash brothers 64: best character?
Pika is so versatile, lots of quick moves, very good in the air - and can cover the most distance with jumps + up-B.
I've never seen "expert play," but I'd venture that Pika's the best |
Re: smash brothers 64: best character?
I Luigi it up usually. And Samus is waaaay underrated.

[/ QUOTE ] This describes me and my brother the last few weeks. Kirby has got to be tops. Here's a challenge my brother and I came up with: You choose any character Face off vs Fox, Link, and Samus at the same time all at the same Level (Start at 7) Play at Hyrule Turn off Items Put stock at 10 lives See how many kills you can get (if Villain loses due to his own incompetence or tornado, it counts as a kill). |
Re: smash brothers 64: best character?
I always played as Samus, because I was horrible when I first started and would just shoot all day. Eventually I got pretty good with him, and none of my friends could beat me.

[/ QUOTE ] all you need to do is zap them with the B-up move, use your flamethrower, and blast them from far away...and drop some annoying little bombs for good measure and Samus is a 'her' |

I like samus

Re: smash brothers 64: best character?
My opinion is that pikachu is the best character. As a general rule, the faster the better.
|
Re: smash brothers 64: best character?
i used to play with Pikachu and dominated but i switched too kirby when i got better
|
Re: smash brothers 64: best character?
I used to play SSB competitively and my roommate here in college from Sweden is also very good - Mario in the 64 version is REALLY underrated, I'd say he's top 1-2 at best. Kirby is far from being best character no doubt.
Top tier would definitely be: Mario, Fox, Pikachu, Kirby (barely) Captain Falcon is close. |
Re: smash brothers 64: best character?
Kirby FTW
|
Re: smash brothers 64: best character?
I don't really know how to play this game, but in my limited experience, Kirby does pretty well when you just mash buttons, and everyone else seemed to be too nuanced for me to actually do well with.
I kept trying Ness cos I have seen pictures where he is using a yoyo as a weapon and that is sweet, but I couldn't figure out how to get it to work. |

Re: smash brothers 64: best character?
meh, I usualy kicked everyones ass with luigi, but it's been 6 years since I've played the game so i don't claim him to be the best.
|
Re: smash brothers 64: best character?
pikachu
|
Re: smash brothers 64: best character?
kirby and pikachu definitely, they made em both a lot worse in the gamecube version (overcompensated imo)
|
Re: smash brothers 64: best character?
someone do my challenge dammit

[/ QUOTE ] It's funny how homegrown pro's are so all knowing. Yes, at the pro level it pretty much goes (1v1) Pikachu > Kirby > Others. I can't make ultimatums like this, however, Isai can. If you can't juggle with Ness like mad you're [censored] (yet he dominates in group fights), and fox is typically OVERRATED - every nub that gets beyond the BOOM factor of samus goes 'oooo Fox is fast, he has gotta be the best' - yes and no basically. kirby just has so many cheese moves its really ridiculous. if he gets you off the edge you have seriously problems (minus pikachu) go on Youtube and watch some Isai 64 videos and be amazed if you think you are an 'excellent' smasher, then check back. |
Re: smash brothers 64: best character?
I never played SSB 64 seriously, but I play Melee competitively, and just based on stuff I've picked up / Isai videos, Pika is def the best. 64 is a pretty [censored] game compared to SSBM, so meh.

Re: smash brothers 64: best character?
all the top level guys use pikachu and kirby apparently. But link has always had a special place in my heart. I can beat all my friends with Link (among others) so I guess that's all that really matters.
link vs pikachu (top level players) |
Re: smash brothers 64: best character?
i've only played on gamecube and only care to play on gamecube, so my answers are restricted to the gc version...
luigi, link and whoever listed link as the worst, i don't exactly know what qualifications you were using, but if it was how you play each character, then you simply suck hard with link because he is FARRR from the worst |
Re: smash brothers 64: best character?
pikachu used to be my favorite

Ness and the knockdown attack.
Thread over. |
Re: smash brothers 64: best character?
I am above average, but probably no where near as good as the pros...
I use mario as my #1. Link, pikachu, DK are good #2's. |
