This could probably go in BBV.

When I was about 12, Michael Jordan spent the day at my friends house at a country club. So, all of my friends are invited over and they play a little golf with Jordan. I was outside playing or riding a bike and missed the call. My mom forgot to mention my friend called while I was out, so I missed out golfing with one of the most famous sports figures of all time.

Now, everytime I go into my friend's restaurant I get to stare at photo on the wall in the waiting area of all my friends and Michael Jordan and not me.

Mick Foley lives in my hometown. Ive served him at 2 different jobs.

He was a semi-regular at McDonalds and was always a pleasure to meet, once stopped a fight.

He also did his banking at the Bank I work at, which was sweet. Hed show up like once every 2 weeks and walk around the lobby. You dont get an appreciation for how big certain wrestlers are until you meet one. Foley looked pretty small on TV compared to most guys and he is huge. He also drives a civic or a focus, and is a twins fan.

This is gonna be the lamest story of this thread, but I'm gonna post it anyway.

I played golf with Will Clinger, who hosts Wild Chicago on PBS channel 11. He's a horrible golfer, but a nice guy. And he's even taller, skinnier, and dorkier looking in person than on TV.

Keira Knightley's boyfriend was directing a film in my area, so Keira popped down for a few days. I was working at a pub at the time behind a bar and she visited the pub along with Sean Bean and her director boyfriend.

I served her a drink.

Re: The most famous person you met (and story )?

When i worked at Costco in westbury long island i met some famous people. Some were there to sign books( Leslie Nielson, Cindy Crawford to name a few) and others came there to shop.

Jerry Lewis was in town one day and he came to shop. He acted like a douche. He asked if we can have security walk around with him so nobody would bother him. He basically ignored anyone who tried to talk to him. When someone asked for an autograph he actually said," im not on the clock" He bought socks or underwear or something and demanded to be brought to the front of the line

Dixie Carter was there to sign a book. SHe had requested evian water. When she arrived, we had poland spring water at her table. She said we better send someone out to get her evian because she is not signing any books without
her evian water.

Allison Stern (Howard's wife at the time) used to come a lot. She would always pay by check, and didnt put a phone number on the check. I told her we need a phone # on it and she replied,"you know who i am and you know i cannot give u my number." she was honestly very nice

Leslie Nielson, Cindy Crawford, Susan Powter were all there at different times to sign books. They were all very nice.

Chelsea Clinton in 2002, I think.

She was dating a kid at my college who my girlfriend at the time was friends with. The boyfriend threw a party that I attended. I was wearing my Nat'l Honor Society shirt from high school and she made a comment so we chatted for a little bit, mostly about her grad school plans, I think. A bunch of us went out to a bar a few nights later. She was nice enough and a little soft spoken.

I met former Senator from NY, Al D'Amato. He was in the building I work at for some reason - I was going downstairs to get some coffee - he was in the elevator and held it open for me (he was unaccompanied)....small-talk conversation for 4 floors. never would have voted for him - but he was nice enough.

Took a shot of Tequila once with Robert Horry at the Ivory Husk in Tuscaloosa.

Had a drink\spoke with Melissa Stark at a bar after a MNF game. She was very pleasant and surprisingly enough not many people recognized her.

I once was walking out of a grocery store and the tall bearded guy walked by me. I turned around to get a 2nd look and the person behind me thought I was looking at him. I took a few more steps and it dawned on me that the tall bearded guy was Mike Gminski. So, I turned back around and told the guy behing me that Mike Gminski just walked by. The man grinned and I realized that he was George Seifert.

Al Gore

My dad's good childhood friend is in the secret service, so he hooked us up with a photo op when Al Gore was in town during the Clinton administration. Didn't really talk to Al Gore, but my dad's friend let us get in the armored limo which was pretty cool.

Jimmie Walker.

Comedy club. Stuck around afterward and got a picture.

I didn't actually meet Chris Rock. But before he got big, he was playing at another comedy club. We were sitting near the front and I was laughing so hard I nearly pissed myself. I had to get up during his act to go to the bathroom. He hit on my wife while I was gone. He also went after the couple we were with, black guy and white girl.

When I was in 3rd grade, my best friend was one of the kids on "The Baseball Bunch" tv show. Hanging out with him I got to meet the World Famous Chicken, Johnny Bench, Pete Rose, and Mike Schmidt.

When I was in college at Northern Arizona University I was leaving the rec center and a voice asked me if I was going to the South campus and if he could have a ride, I turned around and it was Charles Barkley. I said yeah, and he hopped into the back of my truck and I cruised around NAU with Charles Barkley kickin' it in the back.

I coached Chris Duncan of the St. Louis Cardinals when he was in high school.

I met him too, I worked for a small firm where he had an office. Was your building on Long Island?

I went to a Spinal Tap concert at Carnegie Hall in 2001. Jamie Lee Curtis was a row away. Fisher Stevens was there too and after the show I called out to him "Fisher! 'Key West'!" It was a one-season show he did in 1992...Northern Exposure in Key West. The show didn't last, but I heard that he really liked doing it. He smiled and nodded and I gave the devil sign (closed fist, index finger and pinky out) and he gave it back. Very touching.

Manute used to play basketball at my gym. I never talked to him, but I played 5 on 5 against him (all he would do was shoot 3s).

The pharmacy I used to work at used to dispense drugs to the Washington Bullets. So I would see their names in the envelopes behind the counter. But the only one I met was Bernard King, the day after he scored 50+ points. The conversation was as follows:

Me: "Good game last night"
Bernard King: "Thanks"

I ate in the same restaurant as then Vice-President George H.W. Bush. (A fairly dumpy Chinese restaurant in Washington D.C.). I got his autograph.

I have met most of the famous people you read bout playing poker and some you haven't read about, but working in gaming I can't mention exactly who I have met. My father played HS football against and college football with Howard "Hopalong" Cassady and for years his tickets at Ohio State were next to Hopalong and I went to a few games and met him.

Alex Trebek. I was on Jeopardy in 1997 (one-day champ). You know how the contestants and Alex chat amongst themselves during the closing credits? He did actually talk with us, rather than telling us, "Just look like you're talking for the cameras." On the first day, during this segment he sympathized with one of the losers, saying, "I know how you feel, you know, you're trying to get some points, but you're like, 'S---, I just can't make any headway.'" Hearing the usually G-rated Alex Trebek drop any curse has to take a close second behind the actual win as highlights of the trip go.

Was in Rome, Italy this past October... While waiting for a friend in the lobby of my hotel... Martin Scorsese gets off the elevator and starts chatting with me!!... (I almost had a heart attack - I dabble in independent filmmaking!) Was the week of the International Film Fest and he offered me a ticket to his private screening of 'The Departed' showing the next day. Too bad I was heading back to the states that night

Earlier that day, Sean Connery smiled and waved to me in the lobby too! [img]/images/graemlins/heart.gif[/img] [img]/images/graemlins/heart.gif[/img] [img]/images/graemlins/heart.gif[/img]

When i was little, I lived in CA and my parents were good friend's with Leonardo DiCaprio's mother. This was when he was like 11, before he got into any acting, and he's the same age as my older brother, so we'd always hang out and play video games or go swimming in our pool together while our parents hung out.

Unfortunately, in the dozens of times we hung out my parents never bothered to take a picture and lost touch with his mom when we moved to MA.

My father was also good friends with Anthony Michael Hall and his mother, and he was supposed to be my brother's godfather but didn't end up happening.

I'll update with some more when i get a minute.

Does that usually get the attention of such fine ladies?

I have a friend of a friend whose father works for MTV in some capacity, and once I was at his place of work and met Rick Rubin. At the time I was about 13 and didn't have as much appreciation for the guy as I would now, but it was still pretty cool.

Re: The most famous person you met (and story )?

Three stories.

(1) When I was eleven, I was out in California with a woman who used to babysit me when I was in kindergarten. We went out to see a Clippers game, but when we got to the window her credit card couldn't be read and we couldn't pick up our tickets. We were just about to give up and go eat pizza instead when suddenly this huge dude who looked a little like Fabio came up and tapped her on the shoulder. "Are you looking for some tickets?" he asked. And he gave her two tickets. Before we could thank him, he had disappeared, along with the two ladies he had with him.

We walked inside, intending to go straight to the balcony seats, when we were stopped by an official who asked to see our tickets. We showed him, and he practically fell over himself trying to take us into a roped-off area. We walked through and found ourselves at courtside, second row, being seated by like 8 ushers. Pretty exciting stuff.

The guy comes over at halftime and my former babysitter takes off to sit with him while I sit alone with one of his (very hot) lady friends. The Clips hit a shot at the buzzer to win. It was cool.

Turns out the guy who gave us the tickets used to play Hercules on that TV show. Best night of my former babysitter's life.

2) Curt Shilling lives in my town, and he goes to all his son's little league baseball games (my brother plays against him all the time). I gave his daughter a piggyback ride while she was wearing his world series ring.

3) I was on a game show hosted by Dick Clark. He's a douchebag. That probably deserves its own thread some time.

anyway, on our red-eye plane which was about 90% empty was OJ Simpson. This was about 1 year prior to the trial/murder.

He was nice, I shook his hand, that was it...

Honorable mentions:

-The riddler from the batman 60s TV series
-The kid from little big league
-Elton's john's bassist is my brothers best friends dad

Martin Scorsese (to someone who would recognize what he looks like) and Sean Connery on one trip has to be the winner of this thread.

For me, I have a picture of me with Ted Kennedy, I took a picture of my frienfd with John kerry, and I've also met Deval Patrick and Mitt Romney. No close interactions occured besides the standard publicity handshake.

Re: The most famous person you met (and story )?

mine is about marisa tomei and took place in the summer of 1988 or 1989, when i was 13 or 14, and around the time she was on 'A Different World'. I had a HUGE Crush on her at the time:

back then i was still living at my parents house in Brooklyn and we had a house on the corner of the block with a relatively big backyard with a fence around it. at that time, the fence was low enough that you could see people walking on the sidewalk adjacent to the fence.

one day, i was in the backyard shooting hoops by myself and as i was dribbling past the fence i could see a cute woman walking up the sidewalk in my general direction. i shot a couple of baskets and as i came back to the fence, the woman had drawn closer (but was still about 50 yds away). at this point, i realized that she kinda looked like marisa tomei but i live in nowheresville brooklyn so it couldn't possibly be her, right? what would she be doing here? (i didn't know that she had grown up in the area yet).

so as she's getting closer, i continue to dribble my basketball near the fence in order to get a better look at her. in a few seconds, she's right at my fence and we make eye contact and then i realize "OMFG it IS marisa tomei!" like a complete geek, i'm speechless and can only manage an awkward smile while staring at her. she smiles back at me but then her smile turns into a very hearty laugh as she stops walking and pauses right in front of my fence. i'm not sure what she's laughing at so then i start laughing too out of nervousness but then starts laughing even harder.

now i'm really confused but i'd luckily regained my ability to speak so i ask her "um, are you Marisa Tomei?" she says, "yes i am. now can i ask you something too?" i said, "sure!". she asks, "are you missing something?" as she points to my basketball which is rolling across the other end of my backyard.

apparently, as i was standing at the fence trying to figure out if it was really her, i become so entranced with her that i didn't realize that the ball i had been dribbling had rolled away from me. so as i'm standing there staring at her, i'm just *pretending* to dribble a basketball ... essentially looking like a totall idiot.

anyway, i was totally embarrassed but she told me not to be then explained that she was in the area b/c she had grown up in the area and was visiting a cousin.

then she smiled and walked right out of my life .

Eminem. He was staying at the same hotel I was in Hamburg, Germany. We were bringing booze back to the hotel for our weekly happy hour, and a bunch of groupies outside thought we were with his crew. Unfortunately, not true. Seemed like a nice guy, just exchanged pleasantries for a minute.

Have also met a few others, Billy Mayfair (golfer), Scott Williams (BBall player), the guy from Late Edition and King Kong (forget his name), Wayans brothers, Shaggy. Maybe a few others. This is all in the context of normal business travel (airports, hotels, etc.).

Met Bill Clinton with my baseball team when he was president. He just shook all of our hands and took pictures with us. Seemed to be a little rushed but was a nice guy.

Kirby Puckett gave my baseball team a pregame speech before a little league world championship game versus China and told us we'd have to play a perfect game to even have a remote chance cuz "they real good". Thanks Kirb.
