Casinos Coming To Texas?!?!

http://www.capitol.state.tx.us/Search/Do...HighlightType=1

Local radio show here in San Antonio was talking about this last night, so I looked it up.

There are obviously several hurdles to clear, but the bottom line is that this proposal seeks to add resort-type destinations to 8-12 large counties in Texas. If it clears the Texas Legislature, there would then be an up or down vote for the residents. If passed, the Texas Constitution would be amended.

Then, it would be up to the voters in each county, and on a specific plan-by-plan basis.

In other words, the county would vote yes or no on each proposal (the specific development, land-site, etc.).

Any legal-eagles out there care to read the proposed new law and expand?

Also, other than writing our representatives, what else can we do to push this through?

Nope, just a lowly physics grad student . . . but I am sure I can pass this information around to interested parties and contact representatives and such.

it is too bad kinky freidman didn't get elected governor -- as his platform said the first thing he would do was to legalize gambling in texas and use the proceeds from that towards lowering property taxes and improving education.

I can't imagine this ever happening, but it would be awesome if it did! I just can't imagine that the state of Louisiana and all the casino companies there will sit around while 60% of their customers get the opportunity to gamble in their own state. Either way, it's been a long time coming for Texans to at least get the opportunity at something like this.

The state is running out of revenue sources and an income tax is a third rail issue, couple that with property taxes that are becoming increasingly problematic and I think that state gaming is not a matter of if but rather when.

I know that there have been discussions on the Dallas city council about putting a casino on the Reunion Arena site as a way of lowering city property taxes. However, to do so they would have to get the legislature to allow it.

Re: Casinos Coming To Texas?!?!

Not only is the city council already talking about it, there is already a full scale plan in place including all the needed funding to make Reunion Arena into a casino. All the inverstors need is the OK (by means of vote).

I thought Gov. Rick Perry was against Casino type gambling?? If so, Texas will play hell getting casino gambling passed as long as he is around.

When enough potential tax revenue talks, that BS often walks.

I've won the Saturday tourney twice (once when it was limit and once when it was no limit).

They mainly spread low limit and it's no fold 'em all the way.

They do have a $2/$5 NL (500 max) game that is not easy to beat. The group of "regulars" are playing on very large bankrolls, and they put max pressure on the "tourists." In other words, they have no problem playing very loose and aggressive. If you're not there when the game first starts, they have built up stacks of over $2k by the time you sit down, in essence leaving you as short stack.

Finally, the poker room is pretty nice (plasma tv's, comfy chairs, etc.) but the drinks aren't free, and the room is horribly run (from a game standpoint). Their rulings are inconsistent, and the regulars get preferential treatment.

If it's a short drive, it's worth going once to check it out. That said, I live in San Antonio (2.5 hr drive) and I'd rather slit my wrists than drive there again. It's that bad.

Be careful what you wish for. When they legalize casinos in a state many times they add language prohibiting online gambling in that very state. Hypocritical? Absolutely. But you cannot gamble online in Nevada.

The hurdles aren't as great as they have been in the past. Some of the historical hardline anti-gambling expansionists are in support of the Texas Gaming Association's 12-casino bill. John Carona has come out voicing support. http://www.wfaa.com/sharedcontent/dws/ne...n1.3ddfecf.html

Who gives a [censored] ? State online gambling laws are t enforced. And if they were, they wouldn't hold up in court because state laws dealing with interstate commerce are unconstitutional.

So can someone figure out the timeline for this? I know the Texas Legislature only convenes every once in a while, so what are we realistically looking at in terms of timing?

This bill isn't really that rosy for poker, simply because it makes poker dependant on those casinos spreading same, and because the limitations as to the numbers of casinos means poker won't be spread legally in many places.

Poker players in Texas should write their reps to ammend that proposed constitutional ammendment to have a poker exception, where an unlimited number of poker rooms can be created in any venue, pending local option referendum.

Texas is too big of a concentration of poker players to have legal poker penned up in 12 locations and at the mercy of -EV gambling establishments. The limitation to 12 venues is the kind of semi-pandering to anti-gambling forces where you beg for a few crumbs. But poker players have to make the case that poker and other forms of skill based gambling are different and should be treated differently.

It's hard enough to get a politician to consider gambling at all. I'm not also going to ask him to differentiate between skill vs. luck types of gambling when all they see are random cards and betting with chips. I'll take the bird in the hand thank you.

The religious wacs still run the legislature here. I don’t think we will see it anytime soon. Rick Perry isn’t the issue because he can be bought. Just look at him allowing 12 new coal burning power plants to be built.
The power shifted in Washington in the last election but not here. Even so, the Dems in power here are religious wacs.
But we can always hope for the best

I have lived in Houston for 6 mo. now and I am fairly certain casinos aren't coming to Texas anytime soon. Didn't you hear? We must protect people from themselves by outlawing gambling, but gogogogogogo GUNS! Guns ftw.

You can't even buy a six pack in a 7-11 in large swaths of Texas, so I wouldn't old my breath waiting for casino gambling.
