How much have you been burned for?

I've been around poker for a while and i've heard a lot of shady stories. I lot of seemingly good people have done a lot of incredibly low-class things.

Brag: The most i've ever been burnt for is $500. I loaned a friend 5 bills once and a few days later he skipped town never to be heard from a gain. I'm considering this a brag because it hardly compares to losing 12g's and getting poked in the back (i realise this likely didn't happen but you get the point)...

What's the most you've ever been burned for? Please share you're experience here!

I played a 5/10 no cap PLH game with a mississippi straddle (you can straddle anywhere including the button, action starts to left of straddle) game with no cap. A regular millioniare use to play in the game all the time and dump 10k-20k a session, one night he was staying at a hotel in LA and I went and loaned him $8800 to play, then beat him out of another $15,000 heads up in his room, and he wrote me a bunch of checks. Account closed when I tried to cash, havent heard from him since.

Loaned some old guy $750 in a home game once, in $150 increments. Haven't seen him since.

Brag: I won $750 that night.

And no, this was not a HU homegame.

Re: How much have you been burned for?

Me, I've always been very cautious and have probably not lost much more than 2k or so total to scumbags.

But even scumbags sometimes get burnt by bigger scumbags. A couple of years ago, I was in a 75 game with one fairly well-known scumbag pro and an unfamiliar face + plus others.
All thru the game, the new guy kept needling the pro until they started challenging each other to play HU 300/600. They both left the table to set up their own game, and this is what I heard happened later:

The newbie say he didn't have enough money to play that high, but he did have a cashier's check for something close to 25K. He eventually was able to convince the pro to cash it for him. They then played for a little while and he then talked the pro into going to another casino to play, claiming that the present casino was too crowded and noisy with too many railbirds watching their game.

Well, needless to say, he never showed at the other casino, and the cashier's check was not honored by the bank. (Many people think that a cashier's check is good as cash, but it is not. You can claim you lost it and the bank will put a stop payment on it.)

And for those of you who think that legal action is warranted here, the reality of the matter is that trying to chase someone halfway across the country for $25K is not really a feasible option. Usually when you get screwed in a casino, you just have to write it off.

Moral of the story: trust no one you don't know extremely well when it comes to money in a casino.

Re: How much have you been burned for?

A guy bet me 50 on the USC vs. Texas game, then skipped town.

Also on Paradise Poker I had a guy talking crap to me during a big tourney. I said, "I'll bet you 20 bucks that I finish higher than you."

He took the action, then tanked out.

I bothered him relentlessly for about three months and he finally did pay up. It wasn't the money, just the principle of it.

Finally, I loaned to a dealer at a casino who I had known for 10 years. He got fired like a week later for falling asleep while dealer. (gambling problem when he wasn't working)

I have seen him several times when I go to another casino out of town that he now works at, and he always says, "I know I owe you 50, I'll catch up with you next time."

It's been about six years.

i've been burned, i.e. never to be claimed ever for about $300 so far. i had a few different loans that were questionable of a few thousand here, couple hundred there, but have recovered. but i'm currently owed about 5g's for the past half year or so, so we'll see what happens.

Outstanding debts to me total $300 exactly right now. I have lent out much more than this (~$10k) and been paid in full. just 2 kids, one owes me $200 another $100. The kid who owes me $200 still lives in NYC but I just never got around to getting it back. The kid i lent $100 to moved to China. he sent me an email asking me to give him my bank account numbers so he could pay me back. He was a nice kid, guess they really [censored] him up over there or something.

One time last month I staked Danbright and Bluthton for live 200nl poker because we were all drunk and I was the only one with any cash. So I give 'em 400 each and we go gamble. Dan wins a bit, B loses lots (including me going all-in on flop with AK-high against his set and hitting r/r flush ftw). Anyway, we get to the end of the night, they hand be wads that I assume are correct, I get home and with the money B says he'll pay me later I'm STILL DOWN 200 DOLLARS!!!!!!! OMOMGOMGOMG And they both don't think they're responsible for the loss

Needless to say, I'm friends with neither of them anymore. And I've lost my faith in humankind.

this kid who i was friends with (despite him being a total low life) stole ~800-900$ from me. Which at the time(this was 9th grade, so i was 15 i suppose) was an insane amount of money for me. It was basically the sum of all the 20$ bills that I got from every birthday card/Christmas/etc over my entire life up to that point. plus a few odd dollars from when i took over some kid's paper route for a week while he was on vacation. Anyway, one day the kid breaks into my house and goes to my room and takes all the money.

I was so embarrassed by it, i didn't tell my family about it. in fact, for many years only one or two friends knew about it. i am sure my parents don't know to this day.

T-god, i know you said you weren't bothered by it but in all the gambling circles i run around in "staking" means you don't have to pay the person back. you can stake with some kind of a make-up clause or something but it certainly not the default.

if you want to give a fellow gambler money that you want paid back the word for it is loan. at least thats how it is with everyone i know.

loan, they pay back the loan plus a little extra.

stake, if they show a profit, or the staking period is over, they return the stake (or all the money remaining if it is less than the initial stake) plus a percentage of the profits.

????????? thanks for the life lesson buddy, came about 10 years too late though

seriously though, parents wouldn't have done anything. other than suggest he not come over anymore. which obviously happened anyway.

interesting second story:

My father had his car hit while it was parked outside our house, he saw the act take place actually(or figured out who did it by some other means, i really can't remember) and knew the person from the neighborhood. The guy who hit his car thought nobody saw and sped off. My dad never did anything about it, in fact he refused to tell anyone in the family who hit his car.

i am still curious to this day.

I should add that the crash messed up more than just the paint job. i would guess it did $1000-$2500 in damage, but i know nothing about cars.

Re: How much have you been burned for?

I was about to write that I'd never been burned but I forgot a pivotal moment in my earlier years.

I got the grand total of £75 in cash for christmas of I believe 1998. I was 14 then, and thought that it would be a hella good idea to spend it all on dope, so I called up my dealer who happened to be the son of some of my parents' friends. I met up with him, and being the naive little d*ck that I was, trusted him when he said 'give me the money, I've gotta meet the guy, he doesn't like meeting the punters face-to-face'. ok. ten minutes later, he called me from a payphone to say 'some [censored] just robbed me, he knicked my phone, your cash and my keys, i'm screwed, do you wanna come with me to find the guy' and i'm all like 'f*ck that, i'm a pussy'.

While walking home I'm trying to figure out the best course of action. I went to a payphone and dialed his number, he answered, i said 'I thought your phone got nicked' and he said 'er, yeah it did, i got it back' and then hung up.

Options: 1) tell my parents what happened, try to get the money back off him through the parents assuming he's lying (my read is that he's lying > 98%).
2) get my crew together, bounce down his yard, and administer some beatings. at the time, my crew consisted of me and most of the maths class, so this didn't seem too viable.
3) the masterplan. the next day i told my parents that i got mugged at knifepoint for that £75, and we went to the police station, I looked at some mug shots but couldn't find him, and span a nice little yarn about the guy putting a knife to my neck and having a look in his eyes that suggested he was high on crack. Obv while putting on my poshest public-school innocent young kid voice. A few days later while discussing the event with my parents I admitted to them that I did in fact know who it was. Now this kid had a serious rep, expelled from 3 or 4 schools (one of them for burning it down), but apparently his parents didn't really give a f*ck and le ft him a long leash. So my parents contacted the police and told them, then contacted his parents and told them, then his parents asked him, and apparently the bastard only went and told them exactly what happened i.e. he admitted to scamming me for £75. The plan would have worked perfectly, I would have got my money back and he would have been in deep sh*t with the police, except his parents were such idiots that they decided to protect him and basically told my parents to gftm. End result, I'm out £75 and grounded for 4 months, he gets absolutely no repercussions at all. BEAT.
