Do we need a passport to go to Australia? (Official roll call thread)
The title is obviously a joke, but I wanted to start this thread anyway, since I figure a bunch of people on this board are going to Australia (is this the right board for it?). I'm pretty psyched, despite the absurdity of travelling 18 hours by plane to play a poker tournament.
Who else is going? What do we need to know about Melbourne/Australia to make the trip more fun? I hear prostitution is legal, if you're into that sort of thing. Also, here is the schedule of events for the 2007 Aussie Millions. Sucks, but I think I am missing the rebuy by a day. |
Re: Do we need a passport to go to Australia? (Official roll call thre
I'm going to PCA and this thing. I do not envy myself.

Re: Do we need a passport to go to Australia? (Official roll call thre
I live in Australia, and will be down there on the 10th from Sydney, or perhaps a day or two earlier depending on how much I make between now and then.
Prostitution is legal to a degree. It's kind of a grey area. There are plenty of legit and quite up-market brothels around that have no trouble with the law. Street walkers however are a different thing. Melbourne is a very nice city, although not as breath taking as Sydney for the most part. Plenty of stuff to do aside from poker though. I'm not sure what else is relevant. Be on the look out for our funny coloured money, sure to drive you greenback regulars a little crazy. -Andrew |
Re: Do we need a passport to go to Australia? (Official roll call thre
I will be there with Gobbo et al, without my passport.
The main thing about Melbourne is the food - there are an absurd amount of restaurants and bars, so most people just spend a lot of time doing that (I assume you're not the museum type?). Also there's cricket on in this time, but you almost certainly won't want to go to that. |

Re: Do we need a passport to go to Australia? (Official roll call thre
PCA: 4th-11th.
Aussie Millions: Main event starts the 14th. I have about 12 hours of downtime before I go from one to the next. I might be leaving PCA early to do so. |
Re: Do we need a passport to go to Australia? (Official roll call thre
Damn, gobbo, that's a lot of traveling...I don't envy you and I'm a guy who loves to travel. I'm flying in from Singapore on the night of the 11th and I'm planning on playing all the satellites leading up to the main event and if I don't get in, I'll just be the guy on the rail asking you guys for a stake in the juicy 5/10 LHE game. Really though, even though I don't want to right now, I'll probably end up buying in after busting out of all the satellites despite the fact that my roll is currently under $30K. Anyway, I'll be staying in Australia after the tourney until February 10th, catching trains up and down the coast. If anyone wants to stay longer and see more of the land down under let me know or just hop on a train with me. Did I mention yet that Australia is my 7th continent? HOLLA!

Re: Do we need a passport to go to Australia? (Official roll call thre
I'm skipping this despite having a seat via FTP freeroll.
I am going to the PCA and not playing that event. Yes, some people think I'm smart. |

(In another, more accurate, way, it's ridiculous). Edit: Btw, does this mean you will have a stack in play that will be blinded off? I will look for this stack. |

I don't think I'd play my best poker in either event if I tried to go to both, but I certainly applaud the enthusiastic spirit of all those who are hitting both spots. |
Re: Do we need a passport to go to Australia? (Official roll call thre
Yea, going to both PCA and Aussie is a bit much for me. Doesn't help that the airfare is like 3k.
Guess I'm going to EPT Deauville next |

Re: Do we need a passport to go to Australia? (Official roll call thre
Woah, staying until February 10th?
Interesting |
Re: Do we need a passport to go to Australia? (Official roll call thre
If you fly all the way out you may as well hang round for a while. January 26th is Australia day, which is kind of like Independence Day in the US, in that it's a holiday celebrating nationalism and such. It's pretty cliche for most Australians but foreigners would probably enjoy it.
You'd do well to see Sydney Harbor during summer too, as well as trek up to Queensland and do the Gold Coast and Great Barrier Reef. Stuff isn't that far apart down here since the country is reasonably small. It's a one hour flight from Melbourne to Sydney, then another hour to Queensland. Or thereabouts. If anyone has any other questions, or more specific Australia questions, fire away. -Andrew |

I love my wasteful ways.
re: shaniac. I don't think there will be a stack in play. I can't imagine FTP buying someone in who doesn't show up. |

[/ QUOTE ] So they just gobble up the 8K (or whatever) profit that you are surrendering due to the inflexibility of their transfer policy? I think if a site refuses to transfer or redeem the seat, they should be obligated to purchase a seat in your name and put that loot in play. Am I nuts? |
Re: Do we need a passport to go to Australia? (Official roll call thre
I'm going to both. Anyone need a roommate for Aussie? Staying with me is a guarantee you'll win a tournament during the trip just ask gobbo or timex.

Re: Do we need a passport to go to Australia? (Official roll call thre
Out of pocket. I'd be willing to pay half the cost of the room to a package winner.
|
Re: Do we need a passport to go to Australia? (Official roll call thre
I'm going to be in Melbourne over new years for non-poker reasons, then I'm leaving for Thailand on the 8th. Gives me just enough time to play the 2 day $1100 event at the start, so I'll have a crack at that...

Re: Do we need a passport to go to Australia? (Official roll call thre
I'm currently living with Aujoz in Newcastle Australia. I plan on hitting up the main event, might be there for a few of the prelim events. Hope to sat via Stars or FT but will probably go regardless. If I don't win a package I'd be willing to split/share a room with some non random 2+2er.

Re: Do we need a passport to go to Australia? (Official roll call thre
There's a concert series right after the tournament called "Big Day Out".
Here is a list of the bands that are playing. The dates are: January 21st: Gold Coast(near Brisbane) January 25th: Sydney January 28th: Melbourne February 2nd: Adelaide February 4th: Perth The Gold Coast, Sydney and Melbourne shows are sold out but they let you enter in a raffle that gives out 500 tickets per week and I'm obv going to win the raffle so if anyone wants to stay longer and hit any of these up, let me know. Also, January 26th is Australia Day and Sydney should be pretty fun so my current itinerary looks like this: January 21st: Fly from Melbourne to Brisbane ($A 165). Check in to a seedy hostel and go to the concert. January 22nd: Bum around in Brisbane/Surfers Paradise January 23rd: Catch a train toward Sydney. January 24th: Continue toward Sydney. January 25th: Arrive in Sydney, go to the concert. January 26th: Australia Day in Sydney. January 27th: Fly to Melbourne ($A 125). Go to Phillip Island for the Roxy Pro Women's Surfing Festival. And that's all I got. I'm not leaving until February 10th so if you local Aussies could help me plan the next two weeks, that'd be great. Schaefer P.S. Sorry this has gotten so OT. Maybe I should make a post in another forum or something? |
Re: Do we need a passport to go to Australia? (Official roll call thre
Man, so many of those bands are like... I feel like I should be excited about them, but I'm not.
Not that it matters; I can't go anyway. |
Re: Do we need a passport to go to Australia? (Official roll call thre
I agree with the pseudo-excitement BUT it's a big festival in Australia! Isn't that all the excitement you need?

Re: Do we need a passport to go to Australia? (Official roll call thre
... a whole thread on Australia and no one mentions Steve Irwin... impressive
|
Re: Do we need a passport to go to Australia? (Official roll call thre
I wouldn't mind seeing Muse but I think four weeks of traveling would really be pushing it.

Yeah, I wouldn't pay to see any of those acts, except maybe The Streets.
|
Re: Do we need a passport to go to Australia? (Official roll call thre
Thanks to Schaefer and Aaron it looks like there's a decent change I'm going....

Re: Do we need a passport to go to Australia? (Official roll call thre
I'd suggest just coming to Adelaide where I live (and am going obv) where tickets are still on sale, but a lot of the decent acts won't be here.

Re: Do we need a passport to go to Australia? (Official roll call thre
just wanted to say respect to schaefer for letting everyone know about big day out, its meant to be one of the biggest deals among youths in australia and should be a WILD party. you guys should definitely hit that up if youre going to be there at the time.
|
Re: Do we need a passport to go to Australia? (Official roll call thre
Guys,
Thank Aaron and Schaefer. Like 87.5% chance after the pca I'm going to Aussie millions |
Re: Do we need a passport to go to Australia? (Official roll call thre
BUMP
I'm going now btw. Flying in from the PCA with gobbo on the 12th, rooming with Aaron, Gobbo, and Cameron. I hear ActionJeff's going now too. I'll assume he'll probably room with us. I cannot put into words how excited I am for January. All I need to do now is find some stuff to do on the world's longest flight. |
Re: Do we need a passport to go to Australia? (Official roll call thre
o rly
u guys leaving PCA on the 12th or 11th (or 10th?)? |
Re: Do we need a passport to go to Australia? (Official roll call thre
You need to bend over in order to recieve the rake they charge for cash games. Also I think they charge rake and time charge from what I remember. Anyway I'm traveling over from perth on the 5th and I'll be there till the 16th, longer if I win a seat in the ME. holla
