tropicana
hey all,
so im heading for vegas this thursday and the best deal ive found so far has been for the tropicana.. has anyone stayed there, how is the poker, should i just pay more for a better place? any comments are appreciated... london |
Re: tropicana
The Tropicana's rooms are ok for the price and the poker is soft. Like any other "older" csino on the strip it needs some updating. Actually because the staff is so nice it's one of my favorite places to go. They spead low limits and 1/2 NLHE and if there's enough interest 2/5 NLHE. Usually they're down to one table by late night early morning.
The poker room staff are ultra friendly and know their stuff. The waitress that comes on shift around midnight is a cutie. I think her name is Kristi. If you are looking for a nicer room to play the MGM is right across the street but they're a-holes. Nice place though. |

They're a little quieter in the box than many, and are often a bit more "professional". I don't equate that to a-hole. They're certainly preferable to most of the Bellagio staff. Tropicana has a decent location and if you don't like their poker room you can find poker at MGM, Excalibur, Luxor, Mandalay, Monte Carlo, and Alladin all within pleasant(ish) walking distance. I'm not a huge fan of Excal, don't like Luxor, and hate Mandalay, but not everybody shares my dislikes. Tropicana is a reasonable on-strip low-budget choice. |
Re: tropicana
I agree the MGM staff were very professional and friendly when I played there a lot in August.

Re: tropicana
Go to the Trop room between 6pm and 2am from Wed-Sun and see Terry, tell him I sent you (yeah, say "52s from 2+2", he knows who it is).
Terry's unofficially taken over the room, and is doing things to make it a much more player-friendly room, and have it be a fun atmosphere where tourists can come and get their drink on, and make big splashy pots in the 1/2. Wants it to be laid-back, and is looking for the clientele that'll oblige, i.e. he's hoping the POS grumpy locals faze themselves out, he wants it to be a tourist joint. Usually at night there'll be 1-2, rarely 3 1/2NL games going, $$$ on table depends, but like most 1/2NL in town, the $$$'s there for the taking. The room is a very, very simple small room (right now, before the construction starts), but Terry and the crew will make sure you're having a good time. |
Re: tropicana
If you are happy playing low limit you might consider downtown. Rooms/food are cheaper and games are plentiful at Binions, Golden Nugget, and the Plaza.

Re: tropicana
I like the trop - best value on the strip hands down. Paradise tower is best.
The very first time I ever played Hold Em was there. At the time the poker room was a JOKE, but have not been in a year, and it may be different. AB |

Re: tropicana
Call the Imperial Palace. You can get rooms VERY cheap depending on when you go. Plus, it is center strip and good walking distance to most of the good card rooms.
I just booked a room there for March at $50/night. Gumbo |
Re: tropicana
This is where my friends (me and three other lame 20-something white guys) and I stayed on our last Vegas trip in June '06. It was perfect for what we wanted: a room to sleep in.
We got the garden rooms and they were fine. They were clean and served their purpose. I didn't get a chance to play poker there but one of us only played there. He said it was a blast. The game was friendly and everyone was having a good time. It looked like they were only spreading 1-2NL. No autoshufflers in the tables, either. Also, Tropicana has perfect access to the MGM poker room. I think you're actually closer than if you actually stayed at MGM. Just cross the overpass from Trop over to MGM, go down the steps and you're there. I did most of my playing at MGM. Excalibur is also across the street and they have a tram you can take to Luxor and Mandalay Bay. I don't think the poker is that great at any of these places though, but that's just my opinion. It depends on what you want. I would recommend Trop if you're just going on a poker trip with the guys, but I wouldn't take my wife there. |
Re: tropicana
MGM is my LV fav. Dealer's have to be pleasant. Wait around long enough and you will see most of them PLAYING when they can. If you don't recognize them, they are the ones tipping the dealers $5 on a $20 pot. lol. Fortunately, most aren't that good as players.
But for soft pleasant low limit games, MGM and Bally's. Excal for 5am when no one else can fill a table. |
Re: tropicana
The Tropicana is my favorite room in Vegas. The game is soooo soft and the staff is awesome. sooooo soooooft omfg

Re: tropicana
Give the front desk agent a tip for a upgrade to Paradise tower room OR check your bags with the bellman, go play poker and checkin late, after Midnight or so and the only room available will be the Paradise rooms. I always book the garden rooms for the lowest rate and always stayed in the Paradise room, which are quite acceptable.
As far as the Poker room goes, the room is small but with friendly staff and friendly people to play poker with, and always have a blast playing poker. |

I thought he did, but I'm usually wrong. This was in mid-July. Very friendly room with very soft games. The worst thing about getting to your room in the Garden or Tower is getting to your room. You have to drag your bags through the casino, up the elevator (or escalator) one floor, through the long hall with all the kiosk shops, then around a bunch more machines and turn left to the elevator. I think they should have check-in nearer the rooms, but since there's so many wings to the place it prolly wouldn't work. Also going into the place you need to drag your bags up a few stairs, pull open the door that wants to close on your bag and then drag it up a few more stairs to the check-in desk. I'm an old fart and I really don't want the exercise thanks. But it's pretty inexpensive. But getting back to the poker room, there's usually just one table running, sometimes two. I did see three tables running a couple of years ago, but not this past year. I don't know if she's still there, but there was a tall leggy blonde waitress with glasses who everybody called "Princess" who just brought whatever you were drinking before on the way back to get more drink orders. Of course she stood there waiting for her tip and never left until she got it. Her service was terriffic though and why wouldn't you give her a buck anyway? |

[/ QUOTE ] That's my girlfriends old high school friend, her name is Kristen. She is the best server there. However she's been working the midnight to whatever AM shift. At least she was a couple of weeks ago. Tip her and your drink will never go empty. Hell she was bringing me 3 at a time. She brought me a shot, a redbull and vodka and a beer each trip. Didn't ask once, she just did. |
Re: tropicana
Im so glad to hear this as I was planning on playing at the trop this trip to vegas in couple weeks. I was hoping the games were soft there to hit up. Thanks

Re: tropicana
Whoever the young, bigger black dealer was, he was awesome. Very friendly at all tables, no matter how few there were.

I thought he was very good natured and funny. Maybe because he was fast talking (I take it he was from NY/NJ from his accent) and he was a little off-color with his humor. |
