General advice you have for someone just about to graduate college...
I turned 22 last week and am about to graduate from college with degrees in international business and marketing. I live in Southern California at home still. Any general advice for me as I get ready to step into the real world, hopefully making some decent money and getting my own place soon?

Memorize all seven continents: North America, South America, Europe, Asia, Africa, Australia, and Antarctica.
Don't want anyone thinking you're stupid. If you don't know these by now, I think you're stupid and that your elementary school sucks. Seriously though. Good tips already given about avoiding debt and saving money early. ScottieK |

What would you do with your life if you had unlimited time, talent, and support from friends and family?
Whatever the answer is, pursue that thing passionately for at least the next 5 years. |

-life is full of suckers; don't be a sucker. You can start by investing at least 20% of your income every month
-do whatever you want to do for a year, then get your [censored] together -don't follow a career path/gradschool because of social pressures from peers and family, and don't go to gradschool/lawschool/whatever just because you don't know what to do with your life...waste of your time and money |

When you get a job, max out your 401k every year. Consider it a bill that you must pay and live on the rest.

I "got it," and I thought the pic was pretty funny, so I followed through with a response other than the "Yeah, it's all downhill. Nice one" that originally came to mind. And I'm gonna guess that you're over 30 and divorced based on that response. |

It's just that your response was pretty lame and immature |

Most companies put in like 50 cents on the dollar that you contribute up to some certain amount. That's 50% return, tax free. Even if you just do that for a couple years, cash out, and then reinvest elsewhere so you don't pay the taxes, it's pretty unbeatable. |

Re: General advice you have for someone just about to graduate college
I just graduated last spring. I have been doing pretty much nothing but playing poker and relaxing since. I am applying to grad school now and feel pretty good about it. If you have the money/can get a scholarship, grad school can be a great investment.
Oh, don't feel bad about yourself for slacking off for a little. I was depressed for a bit after college but quickly realized that I had been working hard my whole life and deserve to do what I want (being able to afford it). Good luck. |

[/ QUOTE ] I used to work at a golf course, being an assistant pro just doesn't appeal to me very much. Being a club pro would, but you can't just jump right into that; not to mention the fact that even when I was playing a ton of golf in high school I was probably never better than a 4-5 index. I love golf and I like teaching things I enjoy, but I just don't have the talent to take it past an entry level career. I'd get more pleasure out of doing something I can be very good at. |
Re: General advice you have for someone just about to graduate college
my plan is probably to play poker over the summer after i graduate, maybe get some stupid job and build up a few grand in savings. i am then going to greyhound my way across america and just try to see as much of the country as i can and hopefully figure out what i want to do with my life.
there's a town in ireland that's the same as my last name so i'm also going to try and head over there once my bro gets out of school with a giant bottle of whiskey and just try to get completely wasted with anyone there who will drink with me |
