Newbie drinker needs to find his go-to drink
 

Turned 21 in June, had my first drink ever about a month after that. Now drinking lightly a couple nights a week, maybe getting drunk twice a month.

I hate the taste of most alcohol. For shots I can tolerate jager, crown, vodka, etc. based stuff.. but I'm looking for a normal drink. Something that hopefully tastes ok, not too high in sugar/calories, and is above all, cool. Ordering a whiskey sour is not cool.

I hate beer. Tried a bunch of different ones, and I just don't like it. So a mixed drink is what I need. Jack & coke is close, but I feel like there's gotta be something better for me.

What is a good standard drink you'd recommend to a noob?

i think a jack and coke is the staple for young guys. it is definitely a class up from the rum and coke. but you don't like it so...

try the vodka tonic, gin and tonic. i see guys order the vodka and cranberry, but it isn't "cool."

While I'm fine with most vodka based shots, I haven't found vodka good in a drink. Vodka7, lime, tonic, pineapple, none of it.

I tried seeing if rum & coke would grow on me, but it really isn't. My problem might be that the bartender is a good friend and he's pouring them extra strong. If you call that a problem.

I think what I'm looking to do is branch out of standard vodka/j&c/etc and try a different liquor altogether. How many of you would recommend gin, and someone else said cognac? Are there many other whiskey drinks worth trying?

Oh, tried a martini, didn't like it. Damn.

Amaretto Sour sounds like the drink for you. Also a Creamsicle (Vanilla Vodka and OJ) is a good one

how come you didn't start drinking untill you were 21? (this is a serious question. not trying to rag on you. just curious)

I was going to suggest the vodka tonic or gin and tonic but you said you don't like those.

Alcohol is an acquired taste, so i suggest giving it time. Keep trying beer (good beer not bud light) it will grow on you. Liquor is the same way.

Really though, I can't really give a definitive reason, and couldn't 6 months ago, either. Just never something I was interested in, and was fine never having tried. Then, when I was playing this weekly gig at a local bar, a beautiful girl was determined to share a mind eraser with me. Took a long while, but I caved.

We've been dating for 2 months.

This is the obvious one- it's like candy.

Just tell your barkeep buddy to mix you a normal drink, not a shot with coke for color.

Also, sounds like vodka is OK for you. Maybe try a little better grade - try some Ketel One or Stoly's - they have less bite and are a little more drinkable.

Mojitos are very good and if you are not in Cuba or North Havana (Miami) are very gay. White Russians are cool to sip on and not get slammed.

Start drinking scotch or whiskey and coke. Maybe move up to woodford or knob creek instead of jack?
