Best pop/rock band

OK, I'm not talking Radiohead or Flaming Lips or Tool or really any band that does anything really creative.

I am talking about rock bands that for the most part just make great, relatively straightforward music that rocks. Bands that put out albums where you can just listen to the whole thing straight through and think, man, that rocked! Bands that put out albums just chock full of great songs that rock.

I'll start.

Foo Fighters.

mia: Green Day was my second choice, though I haven't given this extensive thought.

Al: PJ is one of my favorites, but they've made too much out-there music to be a contender here.

Re: Best pop/rock band

kurosh,

RHCP pretty good choice, though their early stuff (a lot of which was great) keeps them from being a top contender here because it was too funky.

Alice in Chains

Tempted to say Faith No More but they get a little strange sometimes.

Re: Best pop/rock band

G,

Whoa. Killer choice. Speaking of that, The Killers might be a contender after a few more albums.

U2 is a good choice by Nadjor. The Police aren't the best, but I think deserve a mention.

Re: Best pop/rock band

CMI: Yeah, Clash and any other legit punk band not gonna do.

snaggle: On the line, but pretty solid choice.

ND: REM early stuff DQ's them for sure. U2 is pretty solid pick. White Stripes, on the line but decent choice.

Ocho: STP, nice. I hate to admit it, but yeah CS even though they suck, decent answer.

ill: AIC is decent pick but prob rocks a little too hard, FNM not enough great songs.

kip: Creed, while they super-suck, pretty decent choice. Staind has too much noisy metal stuff. Limp Bizkit better choice, but also has some stuff that rocks too hard. Hmmm, Linkin Park prob a decent choice too.

Re: Best pop/rock band

Al,

Obv the Police don't qualify based on all sorts of out-there stuff as part of their work.

You guys are all nuts with the FNM nominations. I'm a huge fan, but almost nobody liked them outside of Epic.

Re: Best pop/rock band

Elvis Costello and the Attractions.. not some of the later albums, but This Year's Model beats everything. Get Happy!, Armed Forces, and Trust fit the bill nicely as well (trust might be borderline).

Aloysius 11-28-2006 10:26 PM

Re: Best pop/rock band

Diablo - really? I always considered their music straightforward rock. Even the "regatta de blanc" stuff. Same with REM's earlier stuff (like Murmur is pretty straightforward pop rock imo).

Al,

If college radio liked it, it probably doesn't qualify. If college radio loved it, it certainly doesn't.

By your criteria, the early RHCP would qualify too, but like The Police and REM, it doesn't.

Sorry you are not very good at this thread, I still like you.

Rolling Stones have some out there stuff, but Exile on Main Street, Sticky Fingers, Let it Bleed, and Beggars Banquet will easily stand up to any other bands 4 best Rock albums

and obv. Led Zeppelin

I'm not sure if you're just considering 80's and up Pop/Rock bands though

Re: Best pop/rock band

blink-182.

I know they get a lot of hate, but I don't understand it. They write million-dollar hooks for super catchy songs; they're funny, insightful, humble, and really good guys. I can't think of a more enjoyable mainstream pop band (punk and rock both have their pop sides, and this is it).

Green Day is also an obvious choice for the same reasons -- and Green Day is even better (especially live), but they were already mentioned.

EDIT: Also for consideration: Social Distortion

And the weird (or maybe not that weird) thing is that "The Real Thing" is by far their worst album with Patton. The admittedly-uncommercial album "Angel Dust" that followed that is perhaps one of the most genius recordings ever to emerge under the imprint of a major label, and the one after that, "King For a Day, Fool For A Lifetime", isn't much worse. And don't even get me started on the Bungle albums, especially "Disco Volante", which I would rank as the best album of the 1990s put out by -anybody-.

Here's another band that won't get much mention, probably, but deserves to be remembered as a great pop-rock band...the Smithereens. No gimmicks, only a couple small hits, just a no-nonsense high-quality rock and roll band that always delivered the goods. Highly underrated band.

When I Was Cruel was an incredible album as well, and much more in the vein of his earlier recordings than most of the stuff he's been doing recently. Not a weak track on that one, IMHO.

pj: Blink v solid choice.

cog: Yeah, Smithereens v solid, were pretty big for a while in the Southeast, but not quite the mainstream pop/rock sound to be a contender here.

Al: Please come up w/ good choices, I know you have it in you!

KBZ: LZ obv too much out-there stuff. Rolling Stones are better choice, but still prob have too much stuff lots of people won't like.

kc: WTF you are naming albums? What's wrong with you?
