VY\'s future vs others

Talking to a friend, couldn't come to a consensus. Two questions:

Cutler

and I'm a Jake Plummer fan.

Re: VY\'s future vs others

The first really depends on the rest of the team. For most teams I take Vick next year.

The second is pretty speculative, I went with Cutler mostly because of the team around him.

mindless 11-27-2006 07:28 PM

Re: VY\'s future vs others

BTW, I meant assuming that each team is the same save for the QB. So while the Broncos might be the best team next year, that doesn't necessarily mean you want Cutler. I also think that Vick, given the right offense (put him in a run and shoot or something similar to the Bear's offense, predicated on the threat of the deep ball) would be a top five QB.

Case Closed 11-27-2006 07:29 PM

QB

Vick, Cutler. I would take MV next year since he is established and I know what to expect from him next year. Personally I think Vick is a top 1/3 of the NFL QB.

Cutler is supposed to be a QB with a lot of talent and will be on a Broncos team that has all the tools to succeed even if he does not turn out to be such a great QB.

Re: QB

Watched Vince close up all through his college days and was amazed on a weekly basis. He is simply a freak of human nature and loves it when people doubt him.

I would not be surprised if he is the best QB in the NFL in the next 3-4 years.

Re: VY\'s future vs others

Next year I think it's close between Alex Smith and Matt Leinart, assuming the same supporting cast*. Obviously if you get the whole team you want Cutler, because the Broncos are way better than the rest of those teams.

Long-term I'd take Leinart.

*I mean if you get the same supporting cast regardless of which QB you take. ie, I'm the Cleveland Browns and I get to chose from each of these quarterbacks.

1. Mike Vick(due more to the "he's amazing to watch" and $$$ factor)
2. Cutler
3. Vince Young
4. Leinert
5. Eli
6. Alex Smith

Passing DPAR:

Manning: 32.8
Smith: 16.8
Leinart: 9.3
Young: .1
Vick: -4.9

Manning: 8.8%

Leinart: -3.4%
Young: -13%
Vick: -17.1%

Re: VY\'s future vs others

Watching Young play in the Jaguar game earlier this year was painful. I didn't get that feeling watching Leinert or Smith. I'll see if I get it when I watch Cutler. Young's throwing motion in the AFC South is killer. I don't know, it's to early to evaluate him but I think the Titans taking him at #3 was horrendous. They obviously don't due a very good job at BAP.

btw to run the run and shoot you've got to be a frickin genius and very disciplined as a QB. Arm strength is less important than normal. Vick would be an utter disaster in a run and shoot system.

I think it's pretty hilarious that you

(a) assume everyone would know what these wacky acronyms stand for; and
(b) present these stats as a way of ranking the QBs, because obv. stats are the only thing that matters

Ditto. 6-10 games into a rookie's season isn't the best indication on how they'll play during their career.

a) Every serious football fan on this board (and there are a lot of them) know EXACTLY what I'm talking about. Not everyone agrees with these metrics, but they know what they are.

b) Since when did I say I would take Eli Manning over the rest of them because he has better stats? I said I would take Leinart or Smith. Way to jump to (incorrect) conclusions.

Edit: I would take Leinart or Smith because they're younger and should improve more next year than Eli Manning. I have no idea about Cutler (never seen him play) so I'm reserving judement there.

I don't know about Leinart, but Alex Smith was not considered a first-rate QB prospect -- he just happened to be the best one in a weak crop. Then he was simply putrid in his rookie season (though he was younger than usual, and has improved greatly this season).

He's also only 22 this year. Has already over a season under his belt and has gotten much better.

This is definitely true. The key thing is that Smith has played really well this year for the most part, given his relative youth and the Niners lack of weapons in the passing game. He looks like a guy with a very good chance of having a 6-7 year run as a top 10 QB in the league as he moves into his mid to late 20s, with some chance of becoming a top 5 type of guy. Jay Cutler is basically still an unknown commodity. A lot of people like him, and for good reason, but nobody really knows what to expect.

I'm biased. But I'd take Leinart. Leinart has been inconsistent this year. But he's had two great quarters. As he matures, he'll lessen his inconsistencies and be more like his peak.

BTW, he threw for 405 yards yesterday.

I agree with #1 (for the same reasons, he sells tickets and jerseys), but think that Leinart would be an easy #2.

1. Mike Vick(due more to the "he's amazing to watch" and $$$ factor)
2. Leinart
3. Vince Young
4. Eli
5. Cutler (could easily move up to #3 or even #2, depending on how he does the rest of this season)
6. Alex Smith

Re: VY\'s future vs others

From what I've seen of cutler in the pro's and from what I heard the majority of scouts say about him...I'd take him over
Alex Smith for sure(smith wouldn't have been drafted in the 1st round this year according to most scouts), Vince Young, and Leinart and him would be a tie. Leinart doesn't have much of an arm as Cutler and seems less mobile.

Who knows though...Eli looks like crap and Rivers looks great right now.

I don't understand this picking Vick because he sells jerseys crap. This is the NFL, it's not like you're team is going to be hard up for cash with a less popular QB in there.
