Rate my PS3 Purchasing Plan
 

The earliest my roommate and I can get in line is Thursday around noon. We are going to go to the one Best Buy in our area that has a midnight opening (it is receiving 20 60GBs, like all the others in my area). If that line looks reasonable, we are going to wait there, otherwise we'll go by the other two Best Buys in the area.

If we get in the midnight line, as soon as we get the PS3 we're going to go directly to Circut Cities/Targets/Wal Marts in the area to find one without a long line in hopes of getting another box.

Also, I have a couple questions;
a) if the store I am at happens to run out of 60GB, is it worth it to buy a 20GB?
b) what are the profit margins on Wiis going to be?

Similar plan to yours. I'm heading out to a midnight release store way ahead, then after picking one up checking out the 8am opening lines at Circut City, Target, and another Best Buy.

I hate to hijack this thread but I think I have the most ghetto posse asembeled to buy these things Thursday night.

Our Wal-Mart said they were getting 20 units (which I will call to confirm tomorrow), and I intend to buy 3 units. Undoubtedly they will limit these to 1 per customer, so I have enlisted the services of:

Myself, my mother, grandmother, sister, and two friends.

3 of the units will go to me after sales. This will be me, my mother, and friend #1.
2 of the units will go to my mother/sister (to help pay for the damage on my sister's car) after sales. They will be bought by my sister and grandmother.
1 of the units will go to my other friend #2 (who coincidentally helped me come up with the idea).

All in all, I'm going to hopefully have 3 PS3's ready for sale come Saturday morning!

they usually do one per household, not person, so if u don't have licenses showing different addresses, they may turn some of ur posse away


as for wiis, i've been averaging over $250 each profit on my pre-orders

i believe that they will sell out most places by mid-day, so sunday/monday they will be going for $400+ so i am buying as many as i can possibly get my hands on


as for ps3, yes it's worth it for 20gb...u won't make quite as much, but it's still gonna make profit

Every person I asked to come stand in line tomorrow is 100% for sure going.

But, I just called our Wal-Mart this morning and they said they may only be getting 2! units, but they may have as many as 10.

Is it one per household at all stores, usually? Or just like Best Buy or something?

I spoke with the local Walmart manager here, and he said he'd be lucky if they receive 5, and I live in a town with over 100,000 people.

Well I went to the Walmart in my small town of less than 20k (twin cities burb) and there were already 15 kids waiting in line at 4:15 pm today. Good luck with your plan, it's highly likely you're already too late if you aren't in line. Supposedly some of the best buys here already have lines of 30+ people.

What stuff will you be bringing with you? And is it cold where you are.

I live in Michigan and last I checked it is suppose to be 40 and rainy tomorrow, so I will bring
1 chair
1 backpack to put stuff in
3 Sweathshirts - will keep some in my car
Underarmor
Warm Pants
3 Pairs of Socks
Huge Blanket
Chair
Poncho
Umbrella
Book
The Cash to pay for it
Food

Anything else people can think of?

Also I will be going tomorrow around 3-4 when I get out of school - if there is to many people in line I'll check a couple other close places then go home and forget about it.

Mother and grandmother are #1 and #2 in line in my local Wal-Mart.

They even went so far as to tape paper to their shirts with #1 and #2 wrote on them.

And then, get this, the Wal-Mart manager told them that they can't swap in and out with another person. So like my sister can't give my mom a break of any extended period of time. WTF is up with that?

I dunno about cash if you're going to be there overnight. I'm sure at a few places across the U.S. these people are going to get robbed.

I kind of thought about that - but I don't have really any other options. I'm 16 - I don't have a credit/debit card, or a checking account. Do you have any good idea's where to hide it or any alternatives I haven't thought of? (BTW right now I'm thinking of hiding it in my socks)

BTW most places will not sell everyone in your family one if they are all their together. Also I'm glad they don't let you swap out. Its [censored].

My midnight option is now worthless, that store had 20+ people on TUESDAY night. I guess I am going to have to go from place to place to find a short line tomorrow morning.

I called the best buy in downtown T.O. canada. Some dude tells me that none of the employees know (which is consistent what other futureshops/best buys have been saying) but he speculates they will have ballpark figure of 50 and qualifies that saying that location is the biggest in the country. Does that # sound absurdly high or about right?

Serious question. What's to keep someone from being an a-hole and showing up 5 minutes prior to opening and going to the front of the line? It would suck to wait in line for 40 hours and have some 6'8 behomoth cut in front of you at the last minute.

If they're not giving out tickets, nothing. Also, if you plan on purchasing more than one on your credit card (i.e. at different stores) you may run into difficulty because it will look suspicious and they could suspend your card. I'm not sure if you could phone up ahead of time though and tell them you'll be making a lot of purchases in a short time.

But it was suggested in other threads that someone take some post-it notes and a marker to give out numbers to everyone in line. When D-Bag tries to claim he's first and the other 20 people have their own numbers hopefully the manager is smart enough to know what's up.

Personally, if I was first in line, I'd just cut him. But I figured stores had someone to avoid bloodshed in these situations.

I just called the BestBuy and Target in my area and each said they can't disclose how many they'll be receiving. Any Ideas?

They might not know yet. And they probably won't tell.

It depends on a lot of things. Roundabout Best buy like 20-25 total. Target less... Alot less if its not a super target.

I went to 10 stores and called another 20 that are receiving units and couldn't find anywhere. I started looking for a store at 9:45AM today.
