I trapped a spider in my office, how long will he live for?
 

I had just a little bit of coffee in my mug left when I saw a spider hanging on to the telephone cord. I shook him off it and trapped him on my desk under my coffee mug. How long does OOT think he will survive under my mug? My plan is to starve him to death (Rather than squish him barbarically).

The coffee is clearly going to cause him to grow to 1000 times his normal size and then he'll be eating you. I would be nice to him if I were you.

What if he pokes holes in the coffee cup?

Anyways, if suffocation is removed, wouldn't he die of thirst before starving to death? How much water do spiders need?

I used to do cruel experiments on insects regularly as a kid. I believe I had spiders trapped that lived considerably longer than a week with no food/water (they did have air).

The spider will die of thirst long before it starves to death. Depending on the kind of spider they can go from days to months without food, and probably from one day to a week or more without water. Your coffee cup is going to be out of commission for a while.

Put him under a glass so you can observe his status without having to pick up the cup and give him a fresh supply of air (if suffocation is what you're going for).

I doubt there is a vacuum seal on the cup/desk boundary. I don't think he will die of suffication.

I say 3-4 weeks without anything to drink. If you had a clear cup/mug, that'd be cool for observation purposes.

Heh, agreed, even though I hate spiders. The dude's probably bored as hell in there and contemplating the meaning of his life. At least give him some hope by playing Pearl Jam. I hear spiders like Pearl Jam.

i currently have a spider trapped in a glass with a telephone bill over the top of it for the last 10 days.

he has made his way from the bottom of the glass up to the top by constructing a snazzy series of webby things.

no sign of him starving / dehydrating / suffocating / getting bored yet.

and to answer what may well be asked, i forgot about it for a day and then decided id try to catch another one so he could have a friend - havent managed to catch another one yet.

Does he have any access to air at all? Cause you'll be looking at suffocation first.

Then again, I am absolutely no expert. I'd have to guess he suffocates before starving, right? In a matter of a few hours?

no, but i trapped a spider under a cup on my desk and it was dead within a day. maybe it was already dying, or it committed suicide, but i assume it suffocated.

killing the spider doesn't bother me, but trying to starve/suffocate it is messed up.

let the little guy go. Put him out in your yard, he'll eat other insects you consider harmful or annoying.

It's messed up on our end, but who says the spider even has the faculties to be 'tortured'?

IIRC, a Spider's brain consists of Ganglia (sp?) which is basically a group of nerve cells. The little guy is closer to a math equation than a depressed prisoner.
