My mommy who is hardcore asian told me that durians only fall off the tree in the night because if they fell during the day they would hit someone on the head and knock them out.

I had it the first time, cut fresh on a street-side cafe in Saigon. It was in season and ripe. It wasn't that bad. Although, I had to overcome 20 years of the fear of its bad smell in America before I had the balls to try it. Now the smell doesn't bother me.

Mot you are a viet and you didn't have durian until you went to Saigon? How is that possible? I'm a viet too so I've had durian around me all my life. I love it when its fresh. Its ok when its frozen but sooooo delicious when it is fresh. BTW Noah your avatar has always made me laugh. Idk why... its just so ridiculous.

dvo, yeah I never had durian until I went to Vietnam. When I went to Vietnam(born in Minnesota), everything was fair game: durian, snake blood wine, snake soup, snake heart, vit lon(sp?), etc.

That stuff is pretty hideous. I had some Durian candy a friend brought back from Indonesia a few years ago and it tasted like a rotten onion soaked in gasoline.

This summer I had the opportunity to go to Indonesia and wanted to try some fresh Durian but never got the opportunity but I did find one in an Asian market here in the states so I bought it. It was frozen so it didn't have as bad of an odor as a fresh one and the taste was a bit less potent than I expected but it was still very nasty.

the smell is disgusting to most people. However, if you like the taste of it then the smell actually becomes quite sweet.

How did you like those eggs... I love them. I never had them in asia but I hear they taste even better than they do in the US.
