Where did you find guys to play against? Before you got to the course, on the range, waiting to tee off?

Also, what happens if a guy didnt pay?

This is a very crappy start to what could be an interesting thread. OP, go back and post some of your qualifications for starting a thread like this. Did you win $20 off your dad playing golf or something?

Perhaps a story to get discussion started would be in order.

- How good are you?
- How many of your opponents were known from the poker room?
- Do you have any experience with poker fish being sharks on the golf course, and vice-versa?

limon,

I have to assume you're playing at scratch, right? If you were sandbagging to win I want to punch you in the balls.

if your looking to find a mark cold (no previous relationship)the best place is the casino. followed by home games. followed by muni putting greens.

the reasons casinos are so good is because most will take the bravado AND STAKES of whichever casino game they were playing onto the course. you shame them into it. so you say, (if you were playing 1000 buy in poker the night before) "$1000 nassau?, is it worth it? thats only 3 buy ins" or " how bout $100 a hole skins forced press, if I get lucky maybe i can win buy in for the poker game"

sandbagging is a one time score, but not out of the question. sometimes you have to fight fire w/ fire. most of the best marks are poor hustlers. just like many of the best poker opponents are wanna be pros.

limon,

- How much $ do you usually play for?
- What is the most you have won on one round? Most you've lost? On one hole?
- Ever had someone refuse to pay up?

i have, but dont recommend it unless you state upfront its ok for everyone. i like it when an opponent wants to becuase i can usually get more out of the bargain by making them give strokes or take their strokes on the holes i want.

Re: ask me about: hustling golf

-$100 a hole (before presses) is generally the minimum ill get up for.

-most won in a round $5400, it was $800/hole skins by the 14th , most ive lost on 1 hole $3800

-everyone always pays but i let a guy carry a 13k debt for over a year once.

the thing you have to realize about golf is even though the bets seem huge there is alot of "cancelling out". sometimes the biggest matches ive played end up w/ no money changing hands.

despite your tone i will elaborate. most of the match is played before a club is ever picked up. if you can negotiate a good deal you win before you play, regardless of the actual outcome. its like getting a guy to go all in on the flop w/ AA v. your set, regardless of the outcome you win. examples of negotiating a good deal would be:

getting your opponent to take his strokes on the 1st holes in a skins game (w/ presses)by pretending to give him more strokes than you wanted to.

as far as being good at golf. i have a huslers game, i.e i chip and put extremely well. what this does is make me look lucky. i can bomb a 300 drive but i wouldnt. that is equated w/ GOOD. getting up and down at precise moments or never 3 putting will fly under the radar.

sometimes its hard. like when you are playing someone cold on a one time hit and want to maximize your earn. but there are certain "norms" in golf. and you go off those and your instincts once play starts. also you can tell when your in w/ scared money and then you're sure you have controll. example: there is no way a guy betting 500 a hand at bj who wants to play 200 a hole at golf is hustling you or confident in his game.

if you are being invited to a game it is easier because:

a: you dont need to skin the sheep
b: the host comments about the game will give you an idea what you're up against

Are there courses or certain types of courses particularly good for action now? Some of the old ones are talked about, but I have not heard it about newer ones.

Limon, have you read Fast Company? That seems to be the standard book for this and other gambling/hustling. MaxPower recommended it to me and it was a good, quick read.

i really dont think about finding marks at courses, its too forced. many guys who will lose 10k on craps consider a $20 nassau "big stakes" becuase thats what theyve always played for. you have to get them AT THE CASINO. so that the context of the betting is in the casino context and not the golf course context.

my handicap hovers around 4 but ive been known to "get lucky" when the money is deep. ill be happy to play a scratch golfer head up if the betting is right or the money is big enough to make him uncomfortable.

heard of terrance. lots of x-caddy hustlers work the los angeles country clubs or give lessons w/o credentials. these are the guys who, if they lose, might not pay. thier hustle continues after the money is due.

Re: ask me about: hustling golf

the only times ive ever had an angry "customer" is when its a team match and my teammate fux things up. example: i got invited to a match and we had to play teams. we had the match well in hand and were totally in controll when my partner got nitty on some rule. this caused the match to die, no more betting, no more presses, no beer after the round no future invite. if i have a guy under controll ill let him cheat all day.

ive been hustled sorta. by some putting green sharks from time to time. i let my pride get the best of me. i know what they're up to but for small money ill take a shot just to see where i stand.

Im currently pretty damn bad at golf, I plan on spending this winter learning how to play well, Id rather play the game to learn how to hustle, rather than just to play (i have a few books, hence why Ive heard of terrence). Is there anything I should be doing different during the learning process?
