2006 - 2007 NBA Season Discussion Thread
Per the poll and TSC's comments, I'm making this thread for general discussion of the NBA season. Hopefully this will centralize some of the discussion in team threads and foster discussion by having multiple topics going at the same time. We'll see if it works, I guess.
Anyway, spoiler in white: Suns win I'll start just by mentioning I have no idea why this new ref rule was implemented. Guys are supposed to play with passion and then turn it off when they think a call went against them? Are refs really that worried about being "shown up" or is there some other reason I'm missing? |

Re: 2006 - 2007 NBA Season Discussion Thread
I think this is a great idea. Mostly because the Knicks don't deserve their own thread and I can just bitch about them in here, but hey they are undefeated for now.

Re: 2006 - 2007 NBA Season Discussion Thread
Bill Simmons had a thought about this new rule. He seemed to think it would lead to the refs actually enforcing the rules, ie travels, carries, and whatnot. So in essence the refs can make whatever call they see fit and not have to deal with on court antics from whiny players. I think its a good rule. Stern has come down hard the past two years to try and improve the image of the league. It started with the minimum age for drafts, then the dress code, now this. I support all of them. It will make people focus on the game and the emerging group of young, exciting players that the league has.
I just noticed a contradiction, the league is benefiting from all these young players, but a handful of them are straight out of HS. That being said, most of them did play some college as well. A prediction of sorts for myself, Portland will surprise people, and I think the West will be very competitive. I don't see any team running away from the pack, except maybe Dallas or San Antonio. I think the gap between the good and bad in the west is smaller then people think. In regards to the East, only two teams stand out, the Lebrons and the White Out's, err Heat. Anyways, NJ could surprise and also Orlando. But then the drop off is pretty far, with the bottom of the barrel being horrid. |

As someone who has gotten his share of passion-related T's in his life I still think it will be tough for players to restrain themselves, but we'll see how it plays out. As for the rest of your post, I don't remember such a huge inequity in conferences as exists in the NBA today. Not even AFC/NFC or AL/NL in recent years. If any of the Mavs, Spurs, Suns, and maybe Rockets were in the East it would be a much easier road to the conference finals. Unrelated, can anyone tell me who the non-LBJ players are in the Nike ads? Just saw them for the first time. The big 'fro/cell phone guy looks like Amare but doesn't sound like him. Maybe they're all just actors and I'm thinking too hard about this. |

So far, it looks like the refs are OK with a guy doing and initial, "what?" look. But they're not going to put up with guys making big scenes or following them up the court. I'm a fan of this. You can play with passion without being a classless douche bagel. |

Re: 2006 - 2007 NBA Season Discussion Thread
We can only hope the Knicks and Bulls finish out of the playoffs, with the Bulls winning the lottery and Knicks getting second, or vice versa. Then the Bulls blow the pick by taking Joakim Noah and the Knicks victoriously take Greg Oden.

It's just that people are unlikely to read threads that aren't for "their" team (although I'm more than happy to visit the Mavs thread to torment td ). Anyway, thanks for the suggestion to start it. Seems to have worked out well so far. |

Re: 2006 - 2007 NBA Season Discussion Thread
tuq,
I just wanted to ask why there is another one, it doesn't matter to me but I had already created this which is the same thing and was wondering why there was a need for another one. FWIW, I would use the post with the least amount of posts which is yours because it is newer. |
Re: 2006 - 2007 NBA Season Discussion Thread
td,
Dude, my bad. I PM'ed Matt about starting this thread last night, made a poll, then made this thread, all while forgetting your thread which is really weird because I POSTED PROMINENTLY IN IT! So stupid on my end. Anyway, I don't care what happens - I'm not one of those random internet people who get hard-ons about starting threads (not that you are either, but they exist somehow), I just completely forgot yours. Also, way to put that guy in his place in your Mavs thread. I did some Google searches for calendars circling today's date but I quickly became bored and moved on to other things. |
Re: 2006 - 2007 NBA Season Discussion Thread
tuq,
Dude, I like threads with less posts. Keep mine at the back bro, I was just wondering why there was a poll and stuff since we had already done this, that's all. Keep everything as is. |

[/ QUOTE ] They are all Lebron. I like the new rule, the league was getting a little out of hand with players whining at refs all the way down the floor after they were called for a foul or didn't get a call, it was ridiculous. I can't remember who it was in the playoffs last year (cassell?), but they were whining to a ref as the ball got stolen and taken down the court for an easy score |

I have never been a Cassell fan. There is a reason he has floated around so much, and its because he's just such a jackass.

Are refs really that worried about being "shown up" or is there some other reason I'm missing? [/ QUOTE ] I like the new rule, too. After Nugs-Clips last night, Reggie, the Jet, and Barkley were all making this same argument about it being unreasonable to ask these guys to turn off their passion when a call doesn't go their way. I think it's nonsense. That stuff wouldn't fly in college or high school, and the play is certainly passionate at those levels. Why should being a professional permit you to act like a douchebag on the court? If anything, NBA players should be held to a higher standard of conduct, not a lower one. -McGee |
Re: 2006 - 2007 NBA Season Discussion Thread
Not surprised Reggie and Barkley oppose it. Two of the biggest whiners in the history of the NBA. The rule is there because of players like them.

[/ QUOTE ] He may be a prick - in addition to being one of the ugliest players ever to grace NBA hardwood - but I am impressed with his longevity. I thought he'd hit a wall in his last year in MIN but he made a nice comeback last year. Also, he went for 36-6-6 last night. Livingston started ahead of him against PHX the night before, but Cassell replaced him last night. I wonder what they're going to do about that situation since so many are expecting big things from Livingston this year. |

Melo probably deserved to get booted based on the new rules, but then Cassell is allowed to do that? |

Getting in on this late but....
Bucks 1-0 with a big win over Detroit to start the season. That front court of Bogut and Villaneuva is gonna be tough for other teams to matchup with. |

Longshot question, but does anyone know the name that Outkast song, played during one of the TNT halftimes last night?

Re: 2006 - 2007 NBA Season Discussion Thread
His longevity is impressive.
As for Cassell/Livingston, I would imagine Dunleavy will play Sam as the starting option more often than Livingston. Livingston still looks undisciplined with the ball and shoots to much. That offense needs a pass first PG because they have plenty of scoring options. I know Sam likes to gun too, but he is much smarter with the ball. |
