Artichoke Joes

Hey, I think I'll be going there soon. J/w if anyone has experience there, would like more info. Plus meeting 2p2ers is always fun

I've never been there, but I'd drive over for an O8 game. I'm too lazy too call right now to see if it's regularly spread if at all.

I've been playing at AJs for the past year or so. I play 3/6 and 6/12 mostly. The former tends toward the loose passive, while the latter is anywhere from a bit more to a lot more aggressive. There are a handful of very LAG regulars who increase the variance. There is also 15/30 limit and a big $2k minimum no limit game. I don't play omaha, but they seem to spread that on Friday nights. I'm there a couple times a month, mostly Fridays between 9 pm-2am. Not sure what else you might want to know.

O8 is spread Wed/Fri and its 4/8 (half kill maybe). Have never played it, but the 3/6, 6/12 and 15/30 hold'em have all been good every time I have played them.

Yeah, that's the only NL game last time I was there. Fun place, good atmosphere, plus close to public transport. Not sure of average stacks, but it seems to have a board most times.

Re: Artichoke Joes

The only NL is the $2k minimum game. On Friday nights they run one and sometimes two tables. I don't play NL and certainly not that big, but it seems that the 2nd table is must-move. Stacks are often many multiples of $2k. I have no idea if they get big based on play or buy-in. The table plays full, that's 9 handed in California. I'd say at least 3/4 of the players are regulars.

Lucky Chances, which is close by, runs the closest thing to a smaller no-limit game, with its 1-1-2 $200 capped bet game. I suspect their 2-3-5 $200 capped bet game runs more like spreadlimit than no limit.

DaveR,
what have you ordered that you like? Mostly I have desert there, apple pie ala mode is nice, as is the Halo Halo smoothies.

I went to Foxwoods for the first time last Saturday and was bummed that they don't let you eat while playing. Although the free drinks were great.

Re: Artichoke Joes

The $2k NL game goes Mon Wed Friday. They have been getting two tables pretty much every day the game goes the past few weeks. And 3 games on about half the days. Games are always chained must moves. Time charge is $10/half I would say most people buy in for $2-$4k though some buy in $10k+

ANother AJ regular chiming in here. I just moved up to 6/12 and have had some good luck with it so far. Great room overall, solid dealers & floor. If you see a 25 y/o white guy with an ipod, give a "sup bro" (monday's after work is when i've been there recently)

Re: Artichoke Joes

If you plan to play O8B there, go early. Wed. the O8B fills by 7:30 or 8pm, whenever enough players bust out of the tourney. There's normally just one table spread and the regulars who're there hold onto the seats like grim death (which is not far away from a few). It isn't as hard to get a seat Frdiay night but early arrival is an advantage.

Re: Artichoke Joes

Game starts early like 9-10am. On Wednesday the 2nd game was full by 11:30am. Fridays are bad because they run out of tables and if they have to pick starting a 3/6 LHE game over a 3rd NL game they are going to pick the 3/6 game.

lol, suppose i walked into that one, although at the 6/12 tables both times I've been there, it was a mix of middle aged asians, grandpas and me. In that crowd, my description would be a bit more helpful.

Why is it called Artichoke Joes? What role do artichokes play there?

donny0 11-04-2006 02:30 PM

Re: Artichoke Joes

the full story is on their website, but i think the basic story is the orignal owner would take any sized bet back in the day, and always joked he would pay them off with artichoke leaves if he ran out of cash.

Another thing that should be mentioned is that the times I went, the players have agreed upon a "time pot". Every half an hour, a hand played would be designated as such and if the pot reaches $300, (s)he would have to pay the time collection for the half hour ($90). Personally, I love this arrangement as I've never won a time pot in about the 20 hours I've played there.

If you do not agree to the time pot, then you can put up your own $10 per half hour while the winner of the time pot only pays $80. I've only seen one person object to it, and everyone seems to like this arrangment.

No guarantees, but since Friday we observe Veteran's Day and I don't have to work, I might be there to play NL.

Re: Artichoke Joes

there is another great place for limit hold em; casino san pablo

they have 3/6 and 6/12 running daily; 12/24 on wed night and 8/16 on the weekends. because of the bad beat jackpot, the pots are pretty juicy, but the games are still beatable

try not to be there late at night though (after 3am); you may find 6 prop players milking 2 other fish on the table and the game is no longer profitable

i think starting next week san pablo is having a $300 to $500 no limit game; for those who dont want to play 2k min at AJ, san pablo is a great alternative

just my $0.02

Wow im so happy that San Pablo started a bigger NL game. They must have had a change in management since the old management I knew well thought NL was evil. Im going to be going to that one

Haha who are you talking about?
There are 2 $100NL tables that are running daily at SP and each table have like 3 dealers playing in them.. *sigh*
the $300 to $500 NL is starting on Nov 9 by the way.. see you there =) (Although I only play limit games)

Yo...Evo.......

When you say "prop players", do you mean off-duty (not dealing at the moment) dealers?

Dude, with respect to the few dealers we have in this forum, which obviously this isn't referencing, dealers are one of the most profitable types of opponents to play against.

It has been said before......the dream table is 8 white shirts and an open seat.

Do they spread Omaha8 there?

Onaflag..........

Re: Artichoke Joes

Onaflag: props are players hired by the casino to fill the tables and keep the games going; the casino pay them an hourly rate, but they play with their own money

I do agree with you that games are usually juicy with off duty dealers; they are known as action players in san pablo because their buy in usually comes from the tip/toke during their shifts and they are rather loose aggressive (combined with the fact that its pretty hard to play your A game after dealing cards for 6 to 8 hrs)

Unfortunately, Casino San Pablo does not spread O8. They do, however, spread a stud game which I dont really care for

Let me know whenever you decide to hit up casino san pablo.. it'll be nice to meet some fellow 2+2ers there

I'm also thinking about heading over there soon for the NL game. But, if its all regulars, is it worth my time?

are they crappy regulars with money and time to spend or actual good players?

Sensei: the NL game at san pablo is pretty good; a mixture of good players and a few fish who had a lil too much to drink.. no only are you gonna be able to find a challenge against the good players, you could take a rack or two off those loose weak players too.. why not haha

I have a feeling that when they open the $300 to $500 NL this friday, the quality of play is going to go up again
