Sen Kyl targeted

Two different groups targeted Sen Kyl(AZ) today. The DSCC and NARAL Pro-Choice America.

A news story detailing the Dems strategy.

Arizona, Maryland Senate Races Targeted
By JIM KUHNHENN, Associated Press Writer

WASHINGTON - The national parties sought to shake up Senate races in two states Wednesday, with Democrats pumping about $1 million into Arizona and Republicans spending about the same in Maryland.

Less than a week before the election, the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee is spending money to help defeat Republican Sen. Jon Kyl, once considered a favorite to win re-election in Arizona, officials from both parties said.

The National Republican Senatorial Committee put its money on Maryland's Republican Lt. Gov. Michael Steele to win the Senate seat held by retiring Democrat Paul Sarbanes, the longest-serving senator in the history of the state.

Until this week, the parties had narrowed their primary battlegrounds, with both spending millions on ads in New Jersey, Tennessee, Missouri and Virginia. The DSCC already was spending money in Maryland, as well as Montana and Rhode Island. The NRSC this week also bought more than $880,000 in ads in Michigan in an effort to defeat incumbent Democrat Debbie Stabenow.

The moves and countermoves by the two party organizations reflect the fluid nature of the closing days of the midterm election campaign. Both parties have money to spend, but it was unclear Wednesday whether the commitments in Arizona and Maryland were based on perceived opportunities or a desire to force the opposition to spend money where it hadn't planned.

Kyl, a 12-year veteran of the Senate, is being challenged by millionaire Jim Pederson, a former state Democratic chairman who had spent millions of his own money on the campaign. The state has long leaned Republican, but in this election Democratic challengers are in close contests in three of the state's eight congressional districts.

"This contribution is a small return on the millions Pederson has contributed to the Democrat party," Kyl spokesman Andy Chasin said. "We're surprised they didn't pay him back earlier. Now they're doing it at a point when it won't do much good."

In Maryland, most polls show Steele behind Democratic Rep. Ben Cardin. But Steele, who is black, has been winning the support of some Democratic African-American elected officials in the state.

Meanwhile, in Tennessee, Republican Bob Corker gave his campaign $2 million of his own money for the final week of the race. It was the second time the millionaire and former construction company executive has put $2 million toward his election effort.

The loan would trigger the so-called "millionaire's amendment," and campaign finance law provision that allows his opponent, Democratic Rep. Harold Ford Jr., to raise more money from individual donors.

And the mass email for NARAL Pro-Choice America:

Our political director just sent me this message this morning to see
what I could do to help keep ads up in Arizona to defeat anti-choice
Senator Jon Kyl – along with all of our other GOTV work across the
country for pro-choice candidates poised to win. It's so important that
I thought it was worth forwarding on to you. We need $80,000 before
Friday, November 3. Click here if you can help: https://secure.ga0.org/02/elections2...nKpS1W3d1FYLQ?

Best,
Kristin Koch
Deputy Director for Communications for Online Strategies
NARAL Pro-Choice America

P.S. Thanks for all you do. You’ve been amazing, and our Membership
Director wouldn’t let us ask you to help again, if we didn’t believe
we could win. And please forward this message on to your friends!

The most recent poll I could find has Sen Kyl 9 points up. It will be interesting to see what a $1M and the weight of these two groups have on Sen Kyl's reelection chances which has been a walk up until now.

<come on let me spike an Ace at the river against this guy just one time>

The people you are talking about (anti-abortionists) are not against what women are doing to their own body, but to what they are doing against the body that is growing inside of them. I'm not saying what I think is right or wrong but the point you are trying to make is off base.

For those that believe this then I understand them never voting for a choice candidate. Internet poker is my 800 lb gorilla issue this year. I'm willing to throw alot of issues under the bus for this baby. I would vote for Dutch Boyd if I could screw the unholy trinity(Frist, Leach or Kyl) in some small way.

OP,

Good stuff. This was a twenty point race a couple months ago that's done nothing but tighten as election day draws near. Kyl is probably still a big favorite, probably 5:1 or more, but its not the lock it was this summer.

That's because most people are idiots. Also, babies getting their heads "torn" off is one of the dumbest statements ever. Stop trying to use graphic imagery to invoke an emotional response. I'm sure the doctors take out the fetus then place it on a 17th century guillotine to finish it off. Republicans do this so much, it's so annoying. Their typical speech is:

"Think of all the citizens that were burned alive on 9/11 in those towers. Now, are you gonna tell me we cant defend them by doing....."

Kyl is a douche bag on this issue but what makes you think a lib is going to be any better? The bill passed thanks to a bi-partisan effort. Read the votes. I don't know how this thread degenerated into an abortion rant but it always amazes me that the same people who are pro abortion are anti death penalty. They think it is OK to snuff out the life of an innocent unborn child but a raping murdering scumbag deserves to live. These kooks light a candle and sing 'Kumbaya' outside the prison before the needle goes in and then go down to the abortion clinic and take care of that 'mistake'.

Re: Latest Poll: 11/2 10pm

Did GOP Overplay Hand on Gambling Bill?
By ADAM GOLDMAN, Associated Press Writer

NEW YORK - A Republican-sponsored effort to clamp down on Internet gambling may turn out to be a bad bet for the GOP.

The Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act, which President Bush signed into law Oct. 13, has infuriated many voters who enjoy betting on sports or playing poker online, analysts said.

Other observers, however, see little threat to Republicans from the law, calling it a relatively minor matter to most voters.

"I don't believe a large volume of voters are motivated to go to the polls because of Internet gaming, either way," said Brian Darling of the Heritage Foundation, a conservative Washington think tank.

But with Republicans already on the defensive over the Iraq war, budget deficits and the congressional page scandal, the gambling law is the latest issue that could steer voters away from the GOP.

"I've been a loyal Republican for over 30 years, and I'm quitting the party I once loved," said Jim Henry, 55, who lives outside San Francisco. "Not because of the Mark Foley scandal or Middle East policy. But because the Republican Party wants to stop me from what I love to do: play poker over the Internet."

Sponsored in the House by Reps. Jim Leach, R-Iowa, and Bob Goodlatte, R-Va., and backed in the Senate by Majority Leader Bill Frist, R-Tenn., the law pits social conservatives who disapprove of gambling against the 8.5 million Americans who spend about $6 billion annually to cast wagers online.

Some opponents of the law see a political component to its passage, believing it was intended to buoy support for Frist among religious conservatives if he decides to run for president in 2008.

The law is aimed at stopping the flow of money to gambling sites, where funds could potentially be laundered.

Leach has also cited moral dimensions to the law, calling it one of the most important pieces of family legislation ever considered by lawmakers.

"Internet gambling is not a subject touched upon in the Old or New Testament or the Quran," Leach said earlier this year. "But the pastoral function is one of dealing with families in difficulty and religious leaders of all denominations and faiths are seeing gambling problems erode family values."

Even so, a Gallup Poll taken earlier this year found that 60 percent of adults believe gambling is morally acceptable. That's true for many religious conservatives who say they enjoy placing a bet.

"I've talked with Republicans all over the country, and they all understand that this is a theft of our liberty," said lifelong Republican Alan Sheldon, 61, of Loveland, Ohio, whose grandmother taught him how to play poker at the age of 4.

Sheldon, who describes himself as a conservative Christian, said he would not vote Republican next week because of the new gambling law.

"I suspect that people who actually do a lot of Internet gambling ... they're going to be turned off by this," said David Boaz of the libertarian Cato Institute in Washington. "That's going to hurt Republicans."

Boaz said the law would likely alienate self-described libertarian voters, which he estimates constitute about 13 percent of the electorate. Boaz published an analysis last month suggesting libertarians have been slowly shifting their support to Democrats since 2004.

Others say it's too much of a niche issue to swing the election.

"National security, the economy and such issues are likely to be the most pressing issues in voters' minds next Tuesday," said Carrie Meadows, a spokeswoman for Goodlatte.

The Poker Players Alliance, an advocacy group in Washington with more than 120,000 members, said it has been flooded with angry e-mails from libertarian organizations and Republicans disavowing the law. And the group is letting its members know how their representatives voted.

Alliance President Michael Bolcerek hopes they vote Tuesday and "share their outrage with Congress."

Re: Latest Poll: 11/2 10pm

Even if people don't want to vote for Dems, at least not voting for the current crop of Republicans might ease the way for legalization and regulation of Internet poker, rather than this extreme attempt at prohibition. Let the lawmakers know where we stand!

Re: Latest Poll: 11/2 10pm

no person on this site should vote republican. if you don't want to vote democrat, then vote libertarian instead of staying home.
for ex republicans, that will send a much clearer message. then the reps won't try to woo you to the polls in 2008 with gaybashing, they might move to a more libertarian platform.

what about my republican congressman who not only voted against HR 4411 when in came up in July (http://clerk.house.gov/evs/2006/roll363.xml)

but was one of only two representatives with the balls to vote NO on the "Safe Ports" bill because of the Internet Gaming add on.. (http://clerk.house.gov/evs/2006/roll516.xml)
