Zelda in 26 minutes
Ok, we've all seen the SMB3 video. Now here's the same thing with the original zelda. Not as impressive as SMB3, but still pretty cool.

Re: Zelda in 26 minutes
Zelda may have been my favorite video game ever. Fun video.

Re: Zelda in 26 minutes
some of the other links are pretty hilarious. chrono trigger in 4 and a half hours? good to know. maybe ill get high and watch that.

Re: Zelda in 26 minutes
Where's World of Warcraft in two weeks?
|
Re: Zelda in 26 minutes
Is it just me, or does it seem like he takes tons of hits without loosing any life? That seems unrealistic since he never got the blue or red rings.

[/ QUOTE ] Well remember the suns just take your sword away for a couple seconds, and he also hit a couple things and ran threw them while they were blinking (which doesn't hurt you) and there were a couple times where he took a hit at about the same time he picked up a little heart, so it refilled him immediately. |
Re: Zelda in 26 minutes
The Sonic the Hedgehog one is really good too.

Re: Zelda in 26 minutes
he is using some game genie emulator code or something to protect his health.
also, he doesn't truly beat the game since he doesnt defeat the underworld nine levels(after you beat the 1st 9, there is a new quest). still impressive, |
Re: Zelda in 26 minutes
He is not using any game genie codes. He is using slow motion and frame replay in order to make the "perfect" run. Reading some of the information the site http://tasvideos.org/ has on the making of these is actually rather interesting.

Re: Zelda in 26 minutes
Very enjoyable for all Nintendo fans!! !
|
Re: Zelda in 26 minutes
Wow, that is impressive. If I ever get really bored, I'll try to beat that. :-)
The Zelda 2 video is seriously odd. |
Re: Zelda in 26 minutes
The Zelda 1 video reminded me how awesome that game was.
The Zelda 2 video reminded me how [censored] that game was. |
Re: Zelda in 26 minutes
There are lots of videos of games beaten as quickly as possible in this manner on the site Grivan linked to. I've even done two games myself, so if anyone is curious about how the tools we use to make these videos work or something, feel free to ask me.
Short answer: There are no cheats or game genie codes or anything of that nature involved. Using built-in rerecording features in the emulators, the author has complete control over the controller input, meaning he can choose exactly which buttons to press on any given frame. It's pretty fun to make one of these videos actually, trying hard to find the quickest way to finish a level and all that. Kinda like doing lots of challenging puzzles. |
Re: Zelda in 26 minutes
As others have noted, they use emulators and save states to create these, no cheats.
So basically it's showing you what is hypothetically possibly in the game, if you played each screen as quickly and perfectly as possible. |

Impressive
Zelda is one of the best games i ever played. Can't wait to get ahold of Nintendo Wii and Twilight princess |
Re: Zelda in 26 minutes
Fabian: which games did you do? Last summer I spent some of my free time all over that site and even started making some speed-runs myself, but never finishing any. I was doing SNES Rock 'N Roll Racing (I uploaded a FAQ on GameFaqs on my strategies there) - beating it with just the Marauder. And without using save states, I've been working on speed-running NES' Yo Noid. I can make it through the first three levels without taking a hit and as fast as humanly possible. But I can't manipulate some parts and it's tough to consistently time all the jumps, so I mess up eventually.

Site w/ TONS of speed runs
http://speeddemosarchive.com/
None of these use emulaters or other programs. Most of them have player commentary. I recently finished watching FF4 in 3:55 and found it vvv interesting to see the strategies used. Some of the games like Goldeneye 64 and Mariokart 64 are ultra competetive and have near perfect times. |

Out of all ~1300 movies submitted to the site in the ~3 years it's existed, this movie is the highest rated, and generally considered to be the most entertaining. Thinly veiled brag post I know, but I really am quite proud of it. To all of you, if you're interested in watching a tool-assisted speedrun, this definitely is a good choice, especially if you're at all familiar with Super Mario World. The other (really the first since I did it before Super Mario World) run I've done is of Super Demo World, which is a game created by some japanese guy. It uses the same game engine as Super Mario World (meaning it's the same game), but he's done the world/all the levels himself. It's a completely awesome game, seriously, the single most fun game I've ever played. My run of it is uploaded on google videos, so you can watch it here. There's 120 exits in the game so the video is long, but check out a few minutes to see what I'm talking about. If anyone wants to play the game (on an emulator) let me know and I'll try to find some instructions on how to find it. I'm also working on improving the 11 exit (shortest possible) Super Mario World run now, with the same guy I did the Super Demo World run with. It should be done in a few weeks. I think I recognize your name from the forums EscapePlan. Who knew you played poker too Edit: If anyone is interested in watching my Super Mario World run, here is a link to it. You can either download the emulator file, which is small, but you need to have the actual emulator as well as the Super Mario World rom, or you can download an avi file of it. |

The easiest solution (I think) is to download VLC, a very very good media player easily found via google. It plays these avi files without problem. |

If I can make a recommendation to you guys, watch the 70 star Mario64 run OR the 120 star Mario64 run. Both are played amazingly well. Lots of other good runs too, just watch the games you're familiar with I guess. |
Re: Site w/ TONS of speed runs
I'm still amazed by the 70-star speed-run of Mario 64 on SDA. Anyone who has ever played Mario 64 should see it.
On another note, I've started to think TAS runs and serious poker playing attract similar people. I can't think of any reasons off the top of my head, but I feel like there's something there. |
Re: Site w/ TONS of speed runs
The best speed run video is the Zelda OoT one in 2:15 by GuanoBowl and its not even close.
The best time previous to this was the 5 hour one on speeddemosarchive I believe. |

It's also important to note that it's a tool-assisted video and should not be compared (time-wise, anyway) to a regular speedrun. I can also mention that it's very improvable, I believe by about 30 minutes (estimated). |

That's what I find fun/challenging about these movies though, you make them as fast as you can and then you try to improve them |
