Re: korean food renders all other food tasteless.
Traveling for work, I had a cold and went into a Korean restaurant looking for soup. I had eaten bulgogi and bibimbap, so I was not a complete n00b, but this was still one of my first times eating Korean.
I saw a beef soup on the menu, thought - perfect. So I ordered the yukejang. I expected to get a bowl of brown broth. Instead I got red. Glowing red. Damn, that was hot. Took care of the sinuses, though. Since then I have had that again, plus kimchi jigae, sun tubae jigae, etc. Good stuff. |
Re: korean food renders all other food tasteless.
KKF, all the food in the OP looks nasty, basically. But Korean BBQs are very good. Kalbi ftw.
|
Re: korean food renders all other food tasteless.
Well I wouldn't expect to taste much else if you ate kimchi. (You know the traditional prep method is to bury it in the ground for a long time, right? Though I don't think anyone does that much anymore.)
It's been a while since I was in Korea, but BBQ (Galbi) with roasted garlic and lettuce leaves would be my favorite. Do they serve it that way in the states? Have you ever had the soup that is served cold but is spicy in flavor? It's an interesting combination of tastes. Edit: I love the tradition of singing at gatherings. |
Re: korean food renders all other food tasteless.
Wow, way to leave out galbi known widely as "Korean BBQ," the most popular and arguably the most delicious korean "dish." Can't really expect more from KKF.

I had eaten bulgogi... [/ QUOTE ] Bulgogi (I'd spell it with a "P", but I guess either could be acceptable) isn't bad. But if you hear the word "Day-gogi" mentioned in the kitchen, just drop the chopsticks, and get the hell out of there. Hint: bow wow |

If starts with "d" it actually sounds a lot like the word for dirt you can rub off your skin. I guess that's pretty gross too. |

Love Korean food.
If you post on this board and are Korean, let this serve as notice that I'm after your sister/mom just for her cooking. |

its hard to judge asian food by a photo, because you have you dont know what kind of spices were put into it. You can follow the Wiki link to recipes for each individual dish.
There are some meals that I havent been able to try yet, but will eventually like eating an alive octopus. I see this on TV all the time, I dont know if it is a joke or if they really eat it like that. The guy in OldBoy did. |

[/ QUOTE ] Basically all Korean food has some combination of salt, sugar, garlic, green onions, sesame oil, soy, ginger, red chilis, and/or fermented bean paste. Once I got Korean food with bdk3clash and Tha' JBB. Tha' JBB ordered sushi. Go white boy go white boy GO! |

Re: korean food renders all other food tasteless.
i like food from all over the world, but when I eat Korean, I find it impossible to not eat it again the next day. The flavor just grabs you. I normally like Japanesse, but after eating Korean it just seems so bland/boring. My ratings go like this now: Korean, Thai, Italian, Indian/Malay, Japanese. I dont eat alot of latino food, so I cant properly place them on my list.

Daver,
When I was in Seoul, there was ton of sushi everywhere. They even sold it in 7/11. It was also very cheap. A 30 piece platter was like 12 USD in little Mom and Pop places. |

If starts with "d" it actually sounds a lot like the word for dirt you can rub off your skin. I guess that's pretty gross too. [/ QUOTE ] First off, I am Korean. If you mean "Geh Goh Ghi", that is "dog meat." Dog meat is typically prepared in a dish called Boh Shin Tang. Having said that, you are going to have a very difficult time finding any place in the US serving dog meat. (I might be wrong on this, for all I know it might be found easily in CA... But anywhere else, and I guarantee you you won't find it.) If you meant Dweh Ji Goh Ghi, that just means pork. It's just like Bul Goh Ghi, except it is pork and not beef, and it is typically prepared a little spicier (where as BGG is prepared with soy sauce / sesame oil / sugar, giving it a milder sweeter flavor). |

BTW, Korean BBQ's seem like a very simple restaurant to run. You dont need much in terms of utilities in the kitcheen. Most of the side dishes can be kept over night. I dont know how popular these are outside of California and NYC??? [/ QUOTE ] What you say would be 100% true if all they served was bbq, but instead what you say is like 50% true because korean bbq restaurants often serve a good number of dishes that are not bbq. So, this makes running it more similar to a regular restaurant. |
Re: korean food renders all other food tasteless.
Koreans,
When you order bbq, you will sometiems get one sauce which is a type of vinegar which onions sliced in the middle, and another sauce which is yellow and has alot salt inside of it. I think this is seasame oil? There is a third sauce, which has a texture like mustard but it is brown and looks sort of like peanut butter. I am not sure how to descibe the flavor. Can you please confirm how to prepare each of these sauces? |

I dont think the lack of these other dishes would really keep other people away would it? Whenever I order BBQ, we will usually order one soup to go with it. I find it impossible to eat BBQ and a dish together. |
