Worst Gambling loss against the spread in your life.
Probably about 8 to 10 years ago I had Syracuse hoops at home getting 4.5. They were down by 1 with 10 secs left with the ball. Syracuse drove down and got called w/ a horrible offensive foul. Georgetown came down and got fouled w/ 1 second left. After the guy made the 1st FT to go up by 2 some fans threw oranges on the court. The refs called a technical foul on the CROWD! The rest is history

Re: Worst Gambling loss against the spread in your life.
I can’t even remember the circumstances now but the most emotional loss I ever experienced involved a home run where the batter never touched the plate.
I don’t remember if I had the over or the home team -1.5 or what the deal was but I remember I had a bunch of money on the game and pulled off a miracle win when a home run was hit and then the guy never touched home so they took a point off the score. |
Re: Worst Gambling loss against the spread in your life.
I think it was the steelers vs some random AFC team and the steelers were lining up to kick a game tying or winning FG. Either way, the steelers were going to cover. Well the kick gets blocked and returned for a TD and i am ready to puke. There have been worse, but that was my most memorable.

Re: Worst Gambling loss against the spread in your life.
I don't know about all-time, but I had 4 legs of a 5-team teaser that would pay 6.5 units two weeks ago with only Florida +7 remaining. Of course, on the last play of the game, they try that stupid three-lateral play and let Auburn run back a TD on the fumble to screw me over. I was definitely screaming and throwing things on that one.

Re: Worst Gambling loss against the spread in your life.
There are a bunch of classic ones that get posted all the time. Robin Ventura's grand slam single is a famous one, since that kept the game from going over.
Two of the other famous ones: One game involving New England and some other AFC East team where the one team was annoyed at a referee's call and refused to bring out their team to defend the extra point. The kicking team just picked the ball up and walked into the end zone for the two point conversion. Another game the first year of the year college OT system involving some PAC 10 team. The dog was something like +9.5 or +11. The favored team got the ball first and scored. The dog gets the ball, throws an interception which is returned by the defense for a TD, an the favorite wins by 13 in overtime. Somebody else can probably fill in the details but I got the gist of these right. |
Re: Worst Gambling loss against the spread in your life.
Oh, one other game is that I believe the Malice at the Palace in 2004 was a point or two from going over the total when the brawl broke out.

Re: Worst Gambling loss against the spread in your life.
I was on the winning side of it - but the Chris Duhon half-court shot at the buzzer to cover the spread vs UConn in the Final Four was pretty strong.

Toddy not scoring with the MILF, of course.

Didn't involve me personally, thank god - but somewhere around 25 years ago I was working in a sports book in Reno -one of our five-star degenerate car living drink toke begging types had made (for him) a HUGE bet on an SEC college BB game - I think Georgia was one of the teams....
Anyway, he's getting 7, team is down by one with 2.5 seconds left and is inbounding the ball under the basket. Kid throws in ball, jump shot goes in, time expires....except.... Kid throwing in ball stepped on line, so ball goes over to other team, who throws ball length of court for layup - intentional foul on layup - technical on player who fouled, three techicals on various bench players and coaches. Team ends up losing by eight.... Surprisingly, he didn't kill himself. MM MD |

Re: Worst Gambling loss against the spread in your life.
Not a loss, but....
Had over 6 1/2 goals in a Bruins playoff game. Score was 3-3 in the third period, so I circled it as a win. But this was in the old Boston Garden, and all the power went out and they couldn't get the lights back on. Game was canceled and played over the next day. |

But the worst in terms of $$$ not involving the spread would have been the final TD by the Eagles in the SB costing me 1st prize in a $500-a-box pool, I had 4-4 and the prize was 70%. Re: Worst Gambling loss against the spread in your life.
About 18 yrs ago, I had NY Giants -3.5 as the final leg of a 4-game parlay that also involved baseball. The 3 baseball games all were won in the 9th inning, and the Giants had the 49ers down by 4 with time for only one more play. 49ers were 70 yds away. Idiot cornerback lines up 1 ft away from Jerry Rice. Rice blows by cornerback and scores an easy TD.
Best win was Tennessee's miracle kickoff return (against Buffalo?) in the playoffs. |

Re: Worst Gambling loss against the spread in your life.
I'm sure it was probably mentioned here when it happened, but that OSU/PSU game last month was pretty brutal. Penn State, getting 17, is down by 8 with the ball at midfield, 2:30 left in the game. They can even afford to fade a pick-6 and still cover. In fact, pretty much the only way they don't cover is to give up *two* pick-6s, as OSU can run the clock out if they get the ball on offense.
Well, we all know what happened. |
Re: Worst Gambling loss against the spread in your life.
Awesome thread! This probably doesn't fall under the "amazingly horrendous beat" category like the rest of you guys, but it sticks out for me b/c it was the most money I've ever lost on one game.
It was May 20th of this year and I bet on the Mets at home against the Yankees. The line is way too low for Martinez, so I'm loaded up on the Mets money line (IIRC, 1500 at like -130) and a bunch more on the runline (IIRC, 500 at like +165). Mets jump out to a 4-0 lead. Pedro is insane: goes 7 strong, strikes out 8, and doesn't even allow a runner past second base. Duaner Sanchez comes in and gets through the 8th on 6 pitches! So what does Willie Randolph do? Brings in Billy Wagner into the non-save situation. He was barely warmed up and had this "WTF??? I have to pitch today??" look on his face. So of course Wagner gives up two hits, three walks, and hits a guy with the bases loaded. Then the Mets fail to turn an inning-ending double play on a ground ball right to the second baseman. Four runs later, the game is going into extras and the Yankees win it in the 11th. edit: sorry, just realized this doesn't fit with the theme of point spreads. oh well, I think it's a fun story anyway... |

somewhat related:
I didn't answer my phone at 11AM this morning. I found out this evening that the other end of that call was front row tickets along the 3rd base line for game 4 of the world series. I've been sick to my stomach ever since. I'll always regret not answering the goddamn phone. |

Chris Duhon's meaningless banked 3 against UConn 2004 [/ QUOTE ] this reminds me: I lost a game on UConn vs. UMass last season. Same type of thing. The spread was in the 15-18ish range and UConn had it plus free throws to seal it. With the game never in doubt, the UConn shooter missed both, UMass came down and the kid banked in a 3-pointer from just inside half court as time expired and UConn failed to cover. Anyone else lose money on that one? |
Re: Worst Gambling loss against the spread in your life.
not exactly vs the spread, but i had 1k on the tigers at 30-1 to win the al central this year. never hedged and watched them lose their last five including the sweep at home vs the royals to lose the division by a game.

was a $2 parlay to win like 60,000 |

I won my wager by 1/2 a run when the guy who hit the walk-off home run either stopped running the bases or missed home plate. He didn't care because the runner(s) he drove in won the game and his run didn't matter. I live in NYC and I was the only guy in the whole bar pissed off when the guy hit the home run, until a few minutes later when I realized what happened and what the final score was. Then everyone in the bar was happy! |
Re: Worst Gambling loss against the spread in your life.
Here's one that I'm surprised hasn't been posted here yet. I didn't lose it but my brother did, so I felt the pain. In whatever bowl game UCLA (vs. NW I think) played in last year, some dude ran back (for touchdowns) TWO ONSIDE KICKS in the last couple of minutes -- the second one causing either the game either to go over, or for one side to cover. My brother had hit 3/4 or 4/5 of a parlay, and just needed that one to complete. Ouch!

Re: Worst Gambling loss against the spread in your life.
Yeah, it all evens out after enough time, I lost the most on Duhon but won on the Music City Miracle, that NW game, and Bryant's FG for the Over.

Re: Worst Gambling loss against the spread in your life.
I wasn't too happy with the PSU/Michigan game last year. I believe I had Michigan -1.5 (although PSU was my favorite team and having a big year). So PSU is up 5 and Michigan is driving at the end of the game. I figure okay, either PSU will win, or I'll cover. But Michigan decides to score with 00:00 on the game clock. No XP attempt. Michigan wins by 1.

[/ QUOTE ] I remember reading about this, here are the details: Jaguars 30, Steelers 21 (9-22-97) "Simmons blocked a Norm Johnson field goal attempt on the final play of the game, and Hudson picked up the ball and returned it 58 yards for a touchdown that was nothing more than a "victory lap." As he ran down the Steelers sideline, coach Bill Cowher made a mock motion as though he was going to tackle Hudson." So the score was 23-21 JAX and PIT lined up for the game winning try with less than 5 seconds left. The line in this game was JAX -4 so you are right, PIT covers either way. This game was featured in a "dangers of sports betting" article in SI where they told about a college kid who buys 20 contracts at $99 to win $1 before the FG try and ends up out 2k after the return TD. Ouch. -Mack |
