Wait until you graduate.

I host a tournament the week after graduation for all seniors who want to play me.

I even put an extra bounty on my head. No one collected. We play cash games also.

I won't play at my house with current students but I have played in other local tournaments with students.

Definitely bad idea to "win"(take) money from your professor in any poker game until you graduate.. I wouldn't feel bad about playing other moron students, they don't seem to have the power to affect your GPA. Though he might seem to take it well, nobody likes the people who take their money.

He could be a shark, and could bust you.

I think if you beat him down, he;s gonna think a lot less of you, es[ecialy if you lead him to believe you're not a strong player.

lef1000 10-25-2006 03:11 PM

Re: my teacher who plays poker

hes DEF not a shark im 100% positive. i was thinkin of maybe beating him but if he got upset by it giving him the money back and saying that i dont care about the monies
and \perhaps he would help me out when grades came in

goldtoes 10-25-2006 03:53 PM

Re: my teacher who plays poker

whether you took the money from him and gave it back or didn't give it back he will still be pissed (in general...who knows, he might be a cool guy).

i still wouldn't want someone who controls my grades to get pissed off at me over something like this.

There was a movie one time about some dude, I think he was in law school or something like that and his professor. His professor wanted him to sit and play and he said no. Then they drank gin and the kid wound up borrowing 10Gs from the professor. Anyone know what movie that was? name escapes me.

Re: my teacher who plays poker

So if you humiliate him by beating him, you'll then patronize him by giving it back?

This is lose/lose. Wait until you're out of the class. What do you have, two months left? Patience.

Depends on teacher.. if he's a cute guy then it's all ok... if he's not then it may be troublesome... in your place i would be very careful.

Re: my teacher who plays poker

I am a college professor, and I've played poker with students. But I only play poker with students at the nano-level (maybe even pico-level). For all the reasons people have already discussed, playing for "real money" could be a problem. But playing a very low stakes friendly game can be a good way for the students and the prof to get to know each other better and perhaps create a lasting friendship. If I lost 20-30 bucks in a friendly game with students, I wouldn't care one way or the other. If I lost, or won (unlikely since I'm a fish)200-300 bucks, that could create a tense situation. So, if you're out to show the old boy who's a shark and who's the guppy for hundreds of dollars, wait. If you want a friendly micro-stakes game, go ahead and play him.

Re: my teacher who plays poker

As a professor who plays poker, I simply am not going to play with my students or even students whom I know attend the university where I teach. Whether I'm winning or losing, I'm setting up an unacceptable dynamic in the classroom.
