What are your goals with poker?
Curious what people's goals here are.(short term and long term) Depending on your answer, why are the goals you stated your goals?(interested in specifics)
|
Re: What are your goals with poker?
$$$.
That's seriously it really. I would like to make enough money to support myself doing it, and creating enough capital to consider investments and small business opportunities, but my first goal is make money. And it's semi-fun. When winning. I consider the freedom well worth the roller coaster ride. |

What will you do when you reach that amount? |
Re: What are your goals with poker?
To get enough money to buy up all the RE in Tuscon and turn it into a large amusement park where I can host a variety of activities for children.

Re: What are your goals with poker?
To be honest, my goal was sitting around 8-10K per month (if I play just 100NL), but it has gone down now with the recent legislation and such. I am not as confident right now in being able to win around 10PTBB at 100NL (something that was going well for me at PP). Right now, I'd just like to make a few K per month playing limited hours.
My first goal is around 20k or so, at which point I would move out from my parent's house. I don't have a particular time frame, but sooner is always better. My goal yearly would be from 100-200k. I think it's reasonable, but not too easy. I havent played seriously for very long, so I'm not sure how well it would go. I made about 5k in 140 hours playing 25-100NL, and considering that's not even a month's worth of playing (though it was over a few months of time), I'm sure if I were playing 400NL or so, I would be making pretty good bank. Problem is, future valuation per hour may fall with all this legislation crap. Kept me up at night occasionally. My biggest question and concern for myself is putting myself in front of the computer and playing enough hours. Though I'm highly considering going to some local live NL games (correction, spread limit with a huge bet cap) which would probably be very loose and very easy. When I sit live, I can play 10-12 hours at a time. When I'm at home, it's hard to sit down. |
Re: What are your goals with poker?
my goal is to continue increasing my winrate at 1/2 and build a big enough bankroll to play in the 10/20 NL at Cascades, (id need a 40k bankroll i guess and that's super hard to save up) which's the biggest game in Vancouver, within the next 5 years.

Re: What are your goals with poker?
10k+ a month hopefully, right now.
Im at ~7k this month so far, so just 3k to go. I would really like to eventually play 5/10 or 10/20 NL as my main game within a year or so, but I think I may be being overly ambitious. my roll is only 5k atm, so I am taking a small shot at 400NL, and really praying it goes well so I can move up. Would be cool to go from 50NL-400NL in a month, after pissing my roll away playing 5/10NL after a brutal downswing (12.5 BI in 2 days). Some bad play in there too for sure, but still. I hope that I manage to make enough in my 5 years of college so that I can invest a shitton in something and really not have a use for whatever degree I get. |
Re: What are your goals with poker?
You've made 7k this month and your roll is 5k? AND you're playing $2/4? Wtf?!

Re: What are your goals with poker?
After not playing serious, not focusing, not working on my game for way too long, I've decided to finally start taking poker seriously.
My main priority will be improving, not making money. (The money will come by itself... heh) The aba20 well posts really inspired me. |
Re: What are your goals with poker?
$$$$$
My goal is to make enough money to set myself up for life. I look forward to the day when poker ceases to be a profession and becomes a hobby again and I can move onto other things, but for now there is just too much money to be made to do anything else. This is why I am not really too worried about moving beyond $2/4. $200-250/hr is already sick money, and very low stress. I prefer to feel like I am printing money always playing vs inferior players so I can just sit back and grind it out without worrying too much. I don't know why but despite being a very very competitive person I have never really felt the need to try and prove anything in poker, or become "known" or the best. This is unusual because in other pursuits such as MTG and WoW I was driven by the will to try and be better than everyone else, whereas in poker I don't really care, I just want the moneys. So yeah, I want a house and some investments and then I'll quit and spend my time travelling and enjoying the world, and never have to work a sucker job in my life. |
Re: What are your goals with poker?
short term goals, continue making enough so that I can get my debt paid off by the end of next year.
I would like to turn Poker into my job at some point, but I am not even going to think about that until after I am debt free and alot more financially secure. |
Re: What are your goals with poker?
Move to 2/4 by the end of the month (probably won't happen due to lack of motivation).
12k hands. semi decent winrate, like 5ptbb/100 this month at my normal limits. |
Re: What are your goals with poker?
My goal is to reach a level where my lifestyle no longer puts significant downward pressure on my bankroll. Then I can expend more mental energy on improving my game, which is what I really enjoy. Don't get me wrong, the freedom is good too, but the woman's work schedule means I have little to do between 8 and 5 except poker.

Re: What are your goals with poker?
My goals:
- Have fun. - Make some spare cash while I have fun. - Exercise my brain while I have fun. That's it. I don't expect that poker will ever be anything but a hobby for me, and I treat it as such. |

I do have one additional, more concrete goal, though: I want to go to St. Kitts for a Cricket World Cup match in march and fund the trip through poker earnings. It's a fairly tight schedule, but then again, challenges need to be challenging by definition, no? |

Re: What are your goals with poker?
Make some money for a while. If I can reach&keep +6500$ a month I would consider playing poker for a living long-term. dardo. |
Re: What are your goals with poker?
Learn to play all games well. I'm using the Series next year as a target date. By then I'd like to be playing 5/10 NL and PLO, 30/60 limit in the horse games and triple draw. If I can do that, make some good money along the way, and then have a good Series, playing most of the tournaments and the mid-high side games, I'll be satisfied with this year. I'll deal with long term when I get there but I know that I plan to play full time for a few years at least if things go well.

Re: What are your goals with poker?
An interesting thread. Some people look at it as working for $ and others as a hobby. I guess it's more of a hobby for me but I enjoy the cash too. I can see problems with both objectives though.
For me, the problem with poker as a job, is that actually caring about the money gets in the way of me making it. The problem with it as a hobby is that it becomes boring if you don't improve. The way for me to improve is to play better players at higher stakes, but then I'm back to the first problem again. I'd be quite happy playing no higher than $100NL, if there were somehow a league system, allowing you to choose players of your own skill level. It works quite well for other games but until someone comes up with a system for poker, I guess I'll have to keep trudging up the ladder until I'm making $100's an hour. It's a hard life |

Re: What are your goals with poker?
couple $k per month...enough for food, fun, apartment, whatever. also stack some cash. i guess i need some consistentancy though...
(all 25-200NL) (in $1000) April+3.5 May-1.5 June-1 July-didnt play Aug+2.5 Sept-1 Oct+2.5 i dont understand variance. i tend to think im good and hit bad patches. maybe its the other way around (bad but hit good patches). im going to go to dental school soon so i'm not doing this for a career, just to get out of needing a silly $8/hour type job |
Re: What are your goals with poker?
I want to learn to play well enough so I can beat 5/10NL whether I'm sitting with fish or regulars.
I'd be happy with 0.1PTBB/100 at 5/10 - just as long as it's a positive winrate over a large sample. On the way to getting there I want to make more money playing than I would working at some other job without playing more hours than I'd have to working. |
Re: What are your goals with poker?
I'd like to be able to beat 200NL and feel as confident as I do at 100NL. So like 6ptbb/100. I only 4 table but that would still be a pretty good hourly rate. I like my job and wouldn't quit even if I was making a lot of money playing poker, but $5gs a month would be outstanding. Hopefully move up and beat 2/4 over the next year or so. It would be great if eventually I could save up enough to put a nice big downpayment on a house from poker winnings. Keep in mind I don't want or plan to play more than 20 hrs a week and probably less.

Re: What are your goals with poker?
I want to eventually be beating the 5K HUSTT's on Stars but i still have a long long way to go
|
Re: What are your goals with poker?
Poker's a fun hobby that's cool because I can make a little cash. I sorta have two goals:
1. Make some fun money for Xmas present - probably for a new game console system to play with my kids. 2. Bigger goal - make enough money to buy my next work car. Not looking for anything special. Just something reliable to get me back forth to work so 5-10k would probably cover. It'd just be a pretty sweet feeling riding to work in a car that I knew my poker money paid for. |
