For You Canadians: Are we next?
Two things happened today to make me go hmmmm...
(1) On the radio I heard that four underground poker clubs got busted yesterday in Ottawa. Quite the timing. (2) My girlfriend just got her Scotiabank Visa card statement today. It now has a statement reading: "Scotiabank will no longer be accepting Visa transactions to online gaming sites" Is this just bad timing? Or is Stephen Harper getting ready to get into bed with Bush? |
Re: For You Canadians: Are we next?
Damn I hope not. The poker club is no big deal, they had to bust them cause it was an illegal operation, standard and typical enforcement but didn't need to headline the news. Well there are other ways of depositing I guess. Weird that they won't fund gaming sites, maybe they are somehow affilliated with the US?
|
Re: For You Canadians: Are we next?
Actually for many years, alot of credit cards refused online gaming transactions. What I find odd is the timing of these announcements. Hopefully it is just Harper's way of siding with Bush, but not really taking any action to affect Canadians. Maybe Scotiabank made the announcement because some of the banks they own in the US will be affected, so they are just streamlining the process. I can't see how banks would want to fund online gaming in the first place. Leads to bankruptcies...

Re: For You Canadians: Are we next?
We gotta keep voting Liberals man. For those of you who thinks this can't happen in Canada, think again. All it takes is for a few religious douchebags to get majority and start forcing 'morality' down our throats. The US would most likely get this law challenged at some point. If the same thing happened in Canada, I don't think we would have a big enough voice (enough people to care) to do anything.
If it does happen it would be catastophic for me |
Re: For You Canadians: Are we next?
We usually take a wait and see approach before we do anything the Americans do. They are kind of like our guinea pigs.
|
Re: For You Canadians: Are we next?
Don't be so paranoid. Card clubs get busted all the time and most credit cards don't allow transactions.
|
Re: For You Canadians: Are we next?
Washington state had online poker made illegal by liberals.
What you need to avoid is the government thinking "We know what's best for you" thinking, whuch can and has been done by both sides. Also don't forget that 2 congressmen voted against this thing. |

Re: For You Canadians: Are we next?
I havent been able to use my credit cards on most poker sites since I started playing 2 years ago. I suspect Canada won't make a move on the matter. Perhaps that is just my hope.

Re: For You Canadians: Are we next?
Hrm, mine are both master cards. It never really mattered too much anyways when I could just use neteller.
|
Re: For You Canadians: Are we next?
OP: I highly doubt it.
|
Re: For You Canadians: Are we next?
My master card charges a extra fee to fund poker sites. A $2.75 surcharge started to appear a few months ago. I ended up getting a neteller account, no problems there.
There is little chance of «harper following the ŮS lead in on line poker. Harpers power base is in the west where casino`s and poker rooms and legal. And on the other hand, we don`t sneak bills onto others at the last moment to get them passed. Even in the US, I don`t think the online bill would of passed if it was by itself. |

Re: For You Canadians: Are we next?
If it happens it won't be for a while and we will be in the same situation so not a big deal.
All 13 of us will just have to play on Stars or Full tilt |
Re: For You Canadians: Are we next?
It's a huge, huge stretch to link the fedral government to either Scotiabank's actions OR local law enforcement.
Given the way the law had to be backdored in the US, I doubt we have much to worry about from a minority government. |
Re: For You Canadians: Are we next?
Visa Canada will be merged with Visa International and Visa USA with the intent to go public....I doubt any Visa will work on gambling sites sooon.
That being said, I highly doubt that Canada will follow USA decision, since according to Bush, we harbour thousands of terrorists. Since Canada is a democracy it is prime minister Harpers' moral obligation to allow these terrorists their historical venue to launder money. At least the USA is a safer place today. |
Re: For You Canadians: Are we next?
both the liberals and the conservatives are really free market radicals. i doubt either will go after gambling, except maybe to tax it more efficiently. the bloc are too french to ban gambling and the greens are too craaaaaazy. don't vote ndp though.

Re: For You Canadians: Are we next?
While I would feel safer with a different government in power, I see no indications to worry about Canada following the US on this issue. AFAIK, in the US, certain rogue senators and congressmen had been pursuing such legislation for nearly 10 years. I have heard nothing of the sort here.
As we have seen down there though, it only takes one zealot to push a bill like this through. Can anyone here with a good understanding of Canadian politics provide some insight on the norms here vis a vis piggybacking small unpopular bills onto much bigger popular ones? |
Re: For You Canadians: Are we next?
Also, mods, could this thread be moved to the legislation forum? As its very political in nature and will probably get better responses.

You want to vote in another Liberal government that steals millions of taxpayer dollars to fund it's own party, and then spends millions more on various advertising campaigns trying to brainwash you into agreeing with them on every stance. The Conservative government is what it's name says it is in Canada (Conservative). It's more conservative in its spending and taxing then the liberals. It is not geared toward forcing morality down your throat anymore than the Liberal party is geared toward forcing you to attend a gay rights parade. IMO the Liberals would be more likely to start taxing and regulating online gambling then the Conservatives (which is what we should be worrying about) because they love to rob you through new taxes. An outright ban or ban of transactions or whatever would just not happen up here IMO. There is just no support for it. |

Despite all the shortcomings of the Liberal party, we've had balanced budgets and greater liberties like gay marriages, legalization of pot, etc. When Harper got elected, one of his first priorities was to revisit the gay marriage bill within his first week! WTF does that have to do with anything? I'd feel much more secure with online poker and status quo with someone from the liberal party running our country than a right winged Bush wannabe like Harper. This will be the end of the thread hijack, I just had to get the last word in because arguing about politics and religion on the internet are for idiots. Thank you. End hijack. |

Re: For You Canadians: Are we next?
NOPE!
1)Stephen Harper is a wet blanket; 2)We don't have a large Christian-Right Coalition pulling the strings, this type of bill would be met with greater resistance, 3)This type of bill is against WTO regulations. Canada actually cares about international law. That being said, lets be sure we never let anything like this get close! |

Lol. I'm assuming thats some deep sarcasm.

Re: For You Canadians: Are we next?
Tony Clement, Minister of Health and Cabinet member has already stated that Canada is not interested in pursuing similar legislation. If anything it would want to target problem gamblers.
The Ontario Provincial Liberal government strongly considered taxing all gambling winnings a few years ago, which is the worst thing we have had to fear so far. But when it was pointed out that they already reap the profits of the "charity casinos" they decided not to pursue this. |

If that happened in the U.S, there would be hell to pay. In Canada, there was hell to pay everywhere except Toronto where you guys are all indoctrinated by nothing but Socialist/Communist pro-Liberal party media. Keep sniffing that (soon to be legalized) nose candy if you think that we are more free under a Liberal government.
