The Correct Way To Make A Sandwich?

Is there a correct way to make a sandwich?

I had this conversation during lunch with some coworkers and they all thought I was nuts. To me, there is only 1 way to correctly make a sandwich, and making it any different reduces the the overall gratification you get from the sandwich.

The correct way to make a sandwich (from top to bottom) :

bread product
condiments (mayo, mustard, ketchup, etc)
veggies (lettus, tomato, pickle, etc)
bacon (if applicable)
cheese
meat
bread product

The ONLY exception to this that might be acceptable is if you're making the sandwich for future consumption and you put the condiments under the veggies to save the bread product from becoming mushy.

condiments always come last (last to be put in)

I make them like I made burgers back in my first job at Burgerville. I put the veggies below the meat and I like condiments on both pieces of bread. Mayo on bottom, ketchup or mustard on top.

I don't think there was an OOT consensus on sandwiches except that you should flip them halfway through.

Correct way to make a sandwich, correct way to take a leak. What's next, correct way to wipe your ass? I feel sorry for anyone who needs advice in any of these categories.

Since you listed the top to bottom method, you're not putting [censored] on the top half of the bread and working your way down are you? Sandwiches are always built from top to bottom.

It's alright to put mayo or whatever on both pieces of bread.

Someone the other day mentioned Paninis in Ohio. After eating there, you realize you never really ate a sandwhich before.

I usually have eggs, fries, turkey, bacon, cheese, cabbage for mine. The bread is very thick and "smashy" as well. Hhmmm...

Re: The Correct Way To Make A Sandwich?

1.) mayo on both sides of the bread.
2.) Meat
3.) Cheese on top of meat
4.) Mustard on top of cheese
5.) Lettuce on top of cheese
6.) Tomato on top of lettuce

Re: The Correct Way To Make A Sandwich?

Here's how it's done:

-Mayo/Miracle Whip spread on both pieces of bread
-Meat on bottom piece of bread
-Lettuce on top of meat
-Cheese on top of lettuce
-Mustard squirted in zig-zags on the top piece of bread

Alternate method is to put the mustard on after the mayo and then put together the two pieces of bread to get mustard on top and bottom.

Invert the meat and cheese layers and you've got a winner.

Re: The Correct Way To Make A Sandwich?

In general, I agree with the OP. But I think some condiments belong under the meat. Mustard, for instance, tastes better if on the meat side of the bread that on the veggie side. I don't like mayo or ketchup, but if I were putting a salad-dressing type condiment (like oil or blue cheese) on a sandwich, it would go on the veggie side.

Re: The Correct Way To Make A Sandwich?

I worked at a Deli here is the correct way

Cut Bread/hero almost all the way through

Meat
Cheeese
Veggie (lettuce first , tomato , pepppers...)
Condoments spread kind (IE Mayo)
Condoments bottle squirtable kind (IE Non Deli Mustard)
Oil+Vin/S+P

If you put the condoments on first you run the risk of getting messy.

It sounds like there's something between your spread-condiments and your bread. Does that mean you're trying to spread mayo onto the VEGGIES? That sounds wrong for purely mechanical reasons.

Re: The Correct Way To Make A Sandwich?

Depends on the sandwich and depends what you like. My favorite sandiwch ever? Goodness I thought you'd never ask.

Take a roll, put the bottom down. Put one slice of roast beef, then some black pepper. Repeat this until you like the amount of meat on your sandwich.

Next, yellow american cheese. Cut kinda thick. Next, mustard. Good amount. Then cole slaw. Top it off and eat it.

Everyone has their own way of makign sanwiches. One thing I consider incorrect is not cutting a hero the whole way (like subway does) It makes all the meat bend on one side so you have like a weak side and then a strong side. I eat sandwiches because they are always good and you can't overcook them. Consistency is key.

Re: The Correct Way To Make A Sandwich?

How you put it together is not nearly as important as what you use to put it together.

You need to have really, really good bread to start. Then you need soem really tasty meat and some juicy tomatoes. Some tasty cheese helps as well.

Well, the sandwich is named after the English Earl of Sandwich.

In England, we spread butter on 2 slices of bread and then use those 2 slices to sandwich pretty much anything between them (except soup of course!)

This is the key, IMO. You have to have veggie separation between the meat and the cheese. Otherwise the meat and cheese just squish together, and the texture is crappy.

my sandwich:
1. mustard (mustard should be paired with cheese)
2. cheese
3. veggies
4. meat
5. mayo (mayo should be paired with meat)

MMMMMMMMMMMM
