Sports: How far did you go?

Though the consensus is that the majority of OOT are overweight, degenerate gamblers, I assume it will have some athletes.

By how far did you go, I mean high-school sports, college-sports, etc. Why did you stop? How far do you think you could've gone? Bonus points if you somehow managed to play semi-professional\professional.

My story: I played soccer in high-school. I was one of the better players on my team but our team wasn't that good so it wasn't too impressive, we were however pretty good for our size (about 100 males in the high-school). My senior year we went 12-3 and 2-3 games into the post season.

Also played basketball. I had the athleticism\speed but didn't start playing basketball until highschoool so my fundamentals weren't that great (shooting\left hand), and I'm white and 5'10. Played shooting guard\occasionally point guard. My basketball team was actually very good, I didn't contribute much at all but really enjoyed it.

College: Rowing\Crew. This sport honestly doesn't interest me nearly as much as soccer\basketball. I think given the time\interest I could make a very solid lightweight rower (under 165 lbs). However, my team isn't overly competitive and the intensity of academics at my school makes it difficult to find people interested in putting the amount of time in that it takes.

Share some sweet stories..

OP - didn't go that far, but there are definitely some great athletes on this board (tdarko plays pro ball, for example).

For myself, varsity highschool basketball and baseball, then lightweight crew freshman year of college (stopped cause it was too much of a time committment). Just intramurals, pick-up sports after that in college and beyond.

Only sweet story I have is that I'm pretty sure I gave up the longest homerun in the history of varsity baseball at my home field. Oh and it was a walk-off for them too.

Re: Sports: How far did you go?

I played Basketball/Baseball/Golf in high school and although basketball was my first and only love I just couldn't compete with guys faster then me. I had heart and I worked my tail off but it wasn't in the calling to move onto the next level unless I wanted to do a walk-on type D-3.

My last two years of high school I got more and more into golf even though I was raised by a golf course I never truly took it seriously until then. We won state my senior year and off I went to a D-1 university to play college golf.

The minute I knew I wasn't going to go any further in golf like semi or pro was when I shot a 75 in cold, rainy, and hail gust windy conditions and thought I had a good chance to win a tourney or at least help our team win. A guy shot a 65 and I was at a loss. I worked hard it but I just had too much fun in college to think about the next step.

But ultimately the next step led me to coaching. I always was good with coaches and the players and worked my tail off and that realy helped in landing me a job. I got a job as an assistant on both the men's and woman's team for the same college team I played for the year before.

I did that for two years then worked for a golf magazine and am now chasing a normal non sports career. Ok thats me in a nut shell.

i beat like 6 korean kids at table tennis.
got 3rd in a 3 on 3 basketball tournament when i was 14 or so (out of about 20-30 teams). i was also my teams leading scorer *i think* so i was pretty good for my age.

next closest things to a sports achievement: had a performance rating around 2000 in a tournament or 2 of chess. beat some 2600+ computers at 3 minute chess. beat at least an FM in 3 minute chess online.

EDIT: never played on a school team for anything, other than quiz bowl and academic decathelon(tied for the gold medal at state in mathematics WOOT!). so these achievements are how 'far' i went. i think this is what the OP was looking for

Played 4 years of baseball and football in HS.

Played 4 years of D-2 baseball in college.

Been playing baseball in the MABL (18+) and MSBL (30+) now for 10 years. It's a rec league, but fairly competitive. I'm pretty f-ing far from my college weight, but I can still rake.

I played collegiate-level tennis and some satellite-level pro tennis...got to play in a few big tournaments against some known players...we're talking late 80s, though...

I haven't played tennis in over 8 years and would love to get back into it...so anyone in Vegas wanna hit some balls around, let me know!

I also played high school football.

And I once had a golf handicap of 8....I'm probably around a 12 or 13 now, though...I just don't play enough.

no high school sports

i played soccer (goalie) and basketball in college at a small liberal arts school. i was one of the best players but it's not like we were even members of a conference or anything and our teams sucked.

i bowled in some decent money leagues up until i moved to NYC, too expensive here so i gave it up. my best year i finished with a 217 average. i've shot 5 299's but no 300's, best series was a 785.

Re: Sports: How far did you go?

High School - In California

Wrestling: All-CIF Southern Section, All-State. Took 3rd in the state my junior year, but tore my ACL my senior year playing football so I never got to wrestle again.

Football: All CIF Southern Section, All-Sate Honorable Mention

Baseball: All CIF Southern Section

College - In California

Football: Played D3 football. Captain. Started at SS and RB. D3 All-American Honorable Mention. Our team was ranked in the top 25 my Soph year and top 10 my Junior year (but we fell out after lots of injuries).

I probably could have gone decently far in wrestling, but I really wanted to play football in college and not wrestling my senior year made it hard to get back into. Plus, not nearly as many colleges have wrestling so my choices would have been greatly limited.

I'm really happy that I got to play football in college for 4 years. It was an absolute blast. I had offers for some D2 schools but I went the academic route with the small liberal arts college (Pomona College).

Re: Sports: How far did you go?

I played college ultimate frisbee my first year at Davis. Our team had played in the national championship game the year before I got there, but the two best players graduated and a lack of leadership led to tons of infighting and cliques forming on the team. In the end I got tired of the petty bs and didn't come back for a 2nd year, even though I loved the competition and travel.

Re: Sports: How far did you go?

I played golf, basketball, and baseball while in high school.

Baseball was my favorite sport. During one game I hit 2 homeruns in the same inning. I also hit a game-winning homerun against one of the better teams in our league. I was also a pitcher and in one game I had a perfect-game going into the 5th inning where it then got broke by a dribbler right past me, and the 2nd basemen couldn't get to it in time.

I was also on the front page of a big newspaper in my area for throwing a complete game, 2 hitter during a districts game.

I stopped playing after high school because I joined the National Guard, and also, I didn't see myself going on any further past college and so baseball wasn't in my future. I did get recruited by a branch campus of the University of Pittsburgh, but I am the type of being all or nothing and so I turned it down.

My claim to fame: I know Joe Beimel. He is from a town that is about 10 miles away from me, and his wife worked with my dad for a couple years.

My catcher during high school was drafted by the Twins and now plays for the Tampa Bay Devil Rays organization for Visalia Oaks. His name is Josh Johnson.

Re: Sports: How far did you go?

I was a decent football player, all region my senior year. almost walked on at a DII school but decided to work instead.

I was a good wrestler and that was my favorite sport by far -- really started to click during my junior year. ended up something like 29-3 my senior year after choking in the state tournament.

best moment: the defending state champions were visiting for a team match. Our heavyweight wasn't very good and theirs had won state the year before, and my JV could easily beat the guy I was supposed to be up against. So my coach moved me up. the big guys go last, and by the time I was up my team was down four points in the match. This meant I needed to get a fall for six team pts or a technical fall for five team pts in order for our team to win (a tech fall occurs when you are winning by 15 points, the match is stopped). the crowd is going nuts, the coach is screaming that I need a pin, and I just start whipping on him from the very beginning. I keep getting him in really bad spots but can't quite get the pin, but racking up the points the whole time. end up beating him 16-1 with about 30 seconds left.

Sackup - Where'd you go to high school?

I played 4 years of football and baseball in HS, one year of basketball. Started on varsity for football 3 years and only one in baseball. I still have the single season save record at my high school even after 14 years. Our football team was pretty good senior year, but lost to a team we had already beaten earlier in the year for the CIF-SS championship. Nothing in college other than IM leagues (though we did win the co-ed flag football championship my junior year!).

Wait, before you believe that, check out who attended ACUI Nationals in Flordia. I was suppose to bowl doubles with Robin Crawford but it was the year she made the TV show for the PWBA Queens tournament. I am sitting right behind her during her match as I was her guest.

Re: Sports: How far did you go?

I HS/pre-college played in little league and recreational leagues for baseball, soccer, and basketball. I also played flag football. In college, I played intramurals for almost everything my school offered, including all of the above plus volleyball, golf, water polo, ultimate frisbee, etc. Post-college, I played in rec leagues for softball, flag football, soccer, golf, and kickball.

So, for someone who has never actually been good at any sport, I'm generally adequate at most of them.

Re: Sports: How far did you go?

Basketball was my sport. I played back in Sweden where it's not nearly as competitive as in the US, and was on the national team for my age group (at age 15-16).

Played for a big high school as an exchange student, but due to politics (parents bitching about foreign kids taking spots from Americans etc.) I ended up jaded and sick of it all, so didn't do college ball.

My proudest claim to fame would be breaking two hoops in the same day while dunking. Number one was in a streetball tournament in Stockholm where the hoop was kinda abused and my final dunk broke the spring mechanism holding it up. Then I went to my gym and managed to shatter a backboard that was installed incorrectly (too much slack between the backboard and where it was mounted). Pretty cool feeling either way, especially for a 16 year old kid.

Re: Sports: How far did you go?

I was an A level outdoor doubles USVBA (volleyball) player. I was distinctly average-A. I'd win or place well in B levels quite often, but at A I always ended up in the middle somewhere.

Given I'm 5'10" and only had about a 28" leap, I'm pretty happy with those results. It's all but impossible to play volleyball at the highest levels (high A or Open) without being considerably over 6' tall and/or being able to reach 11'0" or better on the jump tests (I could reach 10'1" at my best).

Edit: played until age 35 at which point my L5 disc finally gave out and I can't play anymore

33 kids in my HS class so...

4 yrs football
4 yrs basketball
1 yr baseball
1 yr track

Small school football was awesome. I was 6'2" 200 lbs as a senior playing end both ways. Most of the kids I played again were 3 or 4" shorter and 20 to 30 pounds lighter. Good times.

Not really quick enough for college ball and figured engineering school was enough to handle.

I played basketball in High School but quit my senior year, I spent most of my time on the bech tho. I should have ran track because I would have been really good, but I didn't.

I started cycling in college and did a couple pro/expert level mountain bike races, and would prolly be really good if had been more dedicated, I havent really trained in almost year tho, so now im just a suck ass recreational rider, heh.

Ive started rock climbing and am really getting into that, still not very good tho. Im bouldering V3/4 and have top roped some .12a

Re: Sports: How far did you go?

Basketball - Played Varsity in HS, quit after junior season to focus on other sports.

Volleyball - played all 4 years in high school and played with my college's club team for a bit.

Track - competed all 4 years in HS, and competed at some HS level nationals meets, then competed on a national championship team in college until I partially tore my achilles tendon and it never healed 100% properly.

Coached Varsity Reserve volleyball team at one of the local high schools last year, quit this year due to some very large differences of opinion with the varsity coach. Will probably get back into coaching volleyball in the next couple years.

Coach jumpers on one of the high school teams in town, and would like to eventually coach at the college level, but that would be awhile from now before I can pull a job at that level.

I played golf for an NCAA div I program.

Turned pro right after college, and played full time for 6 years. Last year I got through the Stage 1 of PGA Tour Q-School. If I had made it through Stage 2, i would have been guaranteed at least partial Nationwide status.

Unfortunately, I have forgot how to swing a club this year, and as a result i have run out of sponsorship money. I've decided to pursue a career as a golf instructor.

Hopefully I can try Q-School again though

I was a state champion wrestler at 145#s. I finished runner-up my junior year, with my combined record for the 2 years being 68-7. I did ok in a couple of national freestyle competitions. I got a couple of offers for partial scholarships at smallers schools. I was tired of the constant training and weight loss so I said screw it and have regretted it ever since.
While in college I became a ref, and have throughly enjoyed it. I was selected to call in the state tournament last year. Pretty proud of that.

On another note several guys from my high school (See Two-A-Days on MTV) played D-1 football and baseball. Quite a few played minor league ball and a couple have spent time in the NFL

On a final note I now tip the scales at a svelte 210.

I played Varsity baseball for 3 years as a catcher. Also played JV football, strong safety. I got recruited by a few mid-american conference schools in baseball, but an ACL injury during my senior year pretty much put an end to those offers.

My best sport might of been pool (9-ball) tho. Im not sure how many here are familiar with professional pool. But I played pool since I was 9 years old. I took it furthur in college and actually made a name for myself in the Detroit area. Actually a very good pool scene here. I have played against and befreinded numerous professional players that have been seen on ESPN, most notably Francisco Bustamante in 2000. He cleaned my clock by the way in the first round of a big monthly tournament in Detroit. It was a good expierience tho.

I was/am pretty decent at baseball. I quit after my sophomore year of HS because I liked drinkings and women more than baseball.

I'm a little [censored] as baseball goes (5'11, 180), but am fairly confident I could walk on to a D3 team.

I'm starting to get really good at Slowpitch Softball. I played with my friend's father in one of the competitive city leagues and a couple guys want me to play on their team for the most competitive state tournament. Or something like that, it's all confusing.

I don't hit bombs, but I play a really sick SS and have a cannon (incredibly strong arm compared to that average softball player).

Re: Sports: How far did you go?

Played Midget B hockey, though in my year, the other B team in the city actually beat the AA team when they played each other. Got a couple of invites to crappy college teams to try out for them. I probably could have played Junior B if I worked at it, but chose university instead of wasting my life.

Played on my HS golf team in my senior year and we made it to the Provincial Championships. The lowest I ever got was around a 5 handicap. Again, if I really worked at it, I probably could have gone and played Div 2 for some crappy school in the states, but it just really wasn't worth it for me.
