Re: How old are you? Where do you live?

I'm 30.
I live in SC, originally from Boston.
Married for 1 year, 0 kids.
Math Teacher, BS/MS, Mathematics. I teach probability and statistics.
Favorite movie is probably Shawshank Redemption, or The Usual Suspects.
Favorite author is John Steinbeck.
favorite book is probably Uncle Tom's Cabin
Favorite music is Alice in Chains and Counting Crows.
My best poker accomplishment is simply being a winning online player. I haven't won any big multi's or anything, although i did almost win a NLH tourney for a buy in to the WSOP. as a poker player I consider myself simply tight and disciplined. I'm going to spend the next month or so rereading my books. I want to be a big winner, rather than just a small winner.

Other things you may be interested in:
Hobbies: sudoku, golf, tennis, and my cat pumpkin.

I got my screenname from some guys who were older than me in highschool. They used to go around holding out a ball cap during lunch asking people for beermoney donations.

Drinking, I don't do it as much anymore. Although I like to occasionally tie one on. I drank a lot in college and once drank half of a handle of vodka in about 45 minutes. That was a huge blackout.

I am an underachiever who appreciates free time and socializing more than academic/workplace success.

I have no attention to detail, and I think that holds me back as a poker player. I am a big picture guy.

I am extremely disorganized. My apt/office is always a mess.

The best decision I ever made in life was to go to graduate school where I met my wife who is from Thailand. I will be moving there in May. We will spend time there, and I'm not sure what I will do as an occupation. (Maybe Mr. Mom.) My wife and our relationship is the most important person/thing to me. If I hadn't gotten kicked out of AFROTC after a poor semester academically, i never would have come to grad school, and never would have met my life. Fate is a strange thing.

I hate using new computer software packages but enjoy programming in C.

I enjoy immature humor and creating awkward situations.

Favorite foods: Lobster, Pizza, Thai food, Roast Beef sandwiches..(the kind u get at kelley's roast beef in boston), and ravioli's. I drink a lot of Coca Cola.

I like women who are extremely feminine and gentle.

My favorite athletes are Pete Sampras and Barry Sanders.

I can throw a football very well.

I'm good at ping pong.

I'm terrible at basketball.

I won a wiffle ball tournament in college.

I can't dance and I have no rhthym.

I am probably dyslexic.

I am the youngest of 3 kids.

I wish my unit was bigger.

I've been caught masturbating.

I'm really good at Tetris.

My wife is much smarter than I am.

My brother went to 2 ivy league schools, and I was lucky to get into a state school.

I love Colorado, Charleston, SC, Hilton Head, and Las Vegas.

Re: How old are you? Where do you live?

How old are you? 22, turning 23 in a few weeks.

Where do you live? St. Louis, MO; originally from Houston

Are you married? Girlfriend/Boyfriend? Engaged, getting married in June.

Occupation besides poker? I'm a graduate student in philosophy.

If studying (or if graduated), what and where? Studying philosophy at Saint Louis University. Also did my undergrad here. I'll finish my M.A. here and then go elsewhere for the doctorate.

Favorite movie? Some of my favorites include Braveheart, The Godfather (I and II), and the LOTR trilogy.

Music? Mostly classical. I listen to a lot of Beethoven. My favorite single piece (right now, at least) is Beethoven's Choral Fantasy.

Best poker acomplishment? How long been playing? Been playing for just over a year. So far, no big accomplishments other than paying my rent playing stud. NLHE tournies are probably my next poker project, I think.

I'm a devout Catholic, and I considered a priestly vocation for the first couple of years of my undergraduate career.

I enjoy playing racquetball and soccer. I'm also a decent pool player.

In high school I played a lot of the MMORPG's (Everquest, Asherons' Call, etc.) and made a tidy profit (a couple thousand dollars altogether) by selling items and characters on eBay.

Tolkien is my favorite author. I read some fiction, but most of my fun reading is by authors like C.S. Lewis, Josef Pieper, and David Sklansky .

Re: How old are you? Where do you live?

How old are you? Birthday? Just turned 20 in december
Where do you live? Springfield, MO right now, but STL during the summer.
Are you married? Girlfriend/Boyfriend? Children? No, no, and no.
Occupation besides poker? none
If studying (or if graduated), what and where? I'm a Junior at Missouri State with a math education major and a spanish minor
Favorite movie? Music? It's a Wonderful Life, Forrest Gump, Shawshank Redemption, Green Mile, lots of other ones. I like a lot of different music. I listen to a lot of classical when I am studying, I like punk, emo, alternative, and anything else I deem as good.
Best poker acomplishment? How long been playing? None really, I guess maybe playing as my job over the summer?? Been playing seriously for about a year now.

I live in the dorms still but am moving out next semester, possibly living here in Springfield over the summer. I'm getting an apartment with two good looking ladies (not the twins) for the fall semester. I'm going to study abroad in Spain during Spring 07 with one of the girls I'm living with. I'm unbelieveably excited about it. I hope to be completely fluent when I return. We shall see how that goes lol.

My mom passed away from cancer 5 and a half years ago. It really sucked, but life sucks sometimes. My dad remarried to a wonderful woman whom I love very much. My family is gigantic. I have one full brother, one half brother, two half sisters, two step brothers, and 3 nephews. We all get along fairly well for the most part.

I have great friends. I would do anything for them.

I have been volunteering at a week long overnight camp during the summer called Camp Courage for the past four years. It is for kids who have lost a loved one and are grieving. Honestly one of the best decisions I've ever made. The strength of these kids is unreal. It is definitely the best part of my summer. Every summer I am enlightened after returning from camp. I'm sad that I might have to miss two summers from now because I might be in Spain still. If you'd like more information or would like to make a donation to this wonderful cause you can go to www.annieshope.org or you can PM me.

Best poker acomplishment? How long been playing? I don't know if I have enough of an accomplishment to list a best one. I bought in with $30 back in November and have worked it up $75 without going broke.

I am also an aspiring writer and sci-fi geek. I'm working on a comic book concept and short fiction right now.

Nice to meet you.

Re: How old are you? Where do you live?

I’m coming up on 38.

I live in the Twin Cities. I was born in New Jersey (exit 10), moved to Connecticut when I was 12, and moved here shortly before I turned 24. I honestly can’t imagine living anyplace else.

Divorced, no kids. I find women absolutely bewildering.

I’m an engineer, doing design work on capital equipment. I just went full-time. I had been out of that field for over three years (got a jump on 9/11), and I hadn’t had a permanent position for 4.5 years.

I have a bachelor’s degree in music from Boston University and a master’s from Northwestern University. At the time, Boston University, with Sam Pilafian on faculty, was the top tuba school in the country. If you don’t know who he is, you’ve probably never heard of the famous guys I went to school with like Charlie Villarubia and Ken Amis. Northwestern has been the top brass school in the country for a long time. I had an unfortunate audition experience along the way and ultimately decided that I didn’t want to do music for a living anymore. I went back to school for mechanical engineering in 1994 and graduated in 1998. Getting my engineering degree as an adult is perhaps my proudest accomplishment, but if I had it to do again, I wouldn’t do it.

Favorite movies:

Monty Python and the Holy Grail
Star Wars
The Princess Bride
A Clockwork Orange
It’s a Wonderful Life
Animal House

I’m sure you guys see the pattern there.

Part of the reason that I abandoned music as a vocation was that I stumbled upon a British-style brass band which has been my main outlet for the past 14 years. Music had become a grind while I was in school, and this group really brought the joy back to music for me. Most of my best friends are members of that band. In fact, all of my best friends are musicians. None of my best friends are gamblers.

But I don’t spend a whole lot of time listening to British-style brass band music. When the top bands from Europe roll through town, I always go if I can make it. Since getting divorced, I have gone to something like 100 concerts in the last two years. I like a lot of different genres, but some favorites:

Irish music: I’ve been on a heavy Irish kick for the last couple of years. This includes traditional bands like Solas, Dervish, Lunasa, and especially Flook, and rock bands like the Saw Doctors, Flogging Molly, and Dropkick Murphys. The Pogues are rapidly becoming one of my favorite bands, and I will be flying to Atlantic City in March to see them. I may not have much time to gamble as I’m flying in and out within about 24 hours and may use some of my time to visit my folks in the Philadelphia area.

This is an expensive time of year for me coming up. St. Patrick’s Day is a day of drunken revelry in the United States, but in Ireland, folks go to church in the morning and go home. There are no St. Patrick’s Day bashes in Ireland, so a lot of Irish bands will come to the states and build a late winter/early spring tour around a big St. Patrick’s Day gig.

Eastern European music: this is something that my ex turned me on to. Favorite performers include Ivo Papasov, Yuri Yunakov, and Boban Markovic.

Along the same lines, I love klezmer. Favorite performers include the Klezmatics, Naftule Brandwein, and Margot Leverett. If I had been familiar with this genre fifteen years ago, I might have stayed in Chicago after finishing my master’s and would probably be making a good part of my living playing Jewish weddings.

Hard rock: Dream Theater, Queensryche, Scorpions, Jethro Tull.

American folk: Steve Goodman, The Weavers.

“Classical”: Most of what I really like would more accurately be termed romantic. I love Dvorak, Schubert, Mahler, Brahms, and Richard Strauss. I love 19th century chamber music and large symphonic works.

Some great concerts I saw in 2005 not covered above: Mark Knopfler, Santana, Alison Krauss.

Performer I would most like to see in concert: probably Peter Gabriel. I regret never having seen Stone Temple Pilots in concert, and they’re a large part of the reason that I’m seeing a lot of shows now.

I learned how to play poker when I was about 8. I played a little in high school and a fair amount in college, mostly silly games like baseball and criss-cross. In 1995, I fell in with a group that played a lot of high-low split declare and O/8 and played with them fairly regularly until 2000 or so. I’ve been a regular at Canterbury Park since they opened in 2000. I didn’t start playing on-line for money until Paradise gave me a free $2 to try their real money tables in May 2004. Started playing $.02/.04 and now mostly play $5/10 and $10/20 stud on Party. I have taken a couple of cracks at $20/40 on Party and $30/60 stud/8 on Stars.

Poker accomplishments:

I busted Carlos Chadha for $2 in a $.04/.08 stud heads-up freeze-out.

I have my own page on the Hendon Mob’s site. Of course, so do a lot of people.

The picture on that page, the one I used here for a couple of years, was taken when I won $6500 in a $30/60 stud/8 game in 2002. I’m sitting behind about eight racks of $10 chips there.

I played $15/30 stud with Kirby Puckett in 2001.

I have never been to Las Vegas, but I’m hoping to get out there during the first week of July and play in the $1500 stud event. I’ve been to Foxwoods a few times, gambled in Atlantic City once, and played at a small casino in Wisconsin once. I’ve never had a winning poker trip to a card room other than Canterbury Park.

I enjoy drinking beer. I don’t like drinking to excess, mostly because the morning after is so wretched anymore. Some favorite beers:

Mannequin Pis: a white beer from Belgium
Lindeman’s Framboise: a raspberry lambic from Belgium
Town Hall Brewery’s Masala Mama India Pale Ale: the signature brew of my favorite local watering hole.
Paulaner Hefe-Weizen

Bell's from Kalamazoo Michigan is my favorite American brewer. Summit in St. Paul used to be excellent. They're seasonal beers--Winter Ale, Maibock, and Oktoberfest--all used to be legitimately outstanding, and I used to really look forward to them each year. I don't even buy them anymore, and I think that this is sad.

Re: How old are you? Where do you live?

Canterbury had $10 commemorative chips made for their grand opening in June of 2000 (they had a "soft" opening in April of that year). I don't know if they had a lot of those leftover or ordered more or what, but when the largest limit went from $15/30 to $30/60 in August 2001, they used those commemorative chips. I had lost most of my money that night and was drinking the rest when they converted a $15/30 game to $30/60 around midnight of whatever the magic day was, so I witnessed the first $30/60 game at Canterbury. There was a problem because the yellow $2 chips blended in too well with the $10 chips, which are also yellowish, so they quickly removed the $2 chips from that game and only used $1 and $5 chips when making change for the rake. The commemorative chips were a different style from other CP chips and were slightly thinner. Recently there were concerns that someone might put 21 chips in a row in a rack as the chips wore down, so they switched to the brown $10 chips last summer, I think. Irony of ironies, the surveillance folks can't distinguish between the brown $10 chips and the red $5 chips, so they can only use $1 and $2 chips to make change in the $30/60 game. Perhaps some day someone will get the bright idea to make that a time-charge game.

I recently turned 33 and live in Copenhagen, Denmark

I have an BS in Economics

I have slaved away for selling realestate morgages and banking for the last three years and a couple weeks ago’s I simply had enough, so technically I am now gone Pro ..

I have a girlfriend, no kids (yet)

I have played guitar since I was I child .. never really got good at it, but can fake a good Hendrix or Knopfler .. I can’t fake a Wes Montgomery or Pat Metheny though.
All this favorite movie, book or musicstuff is hard to pinpoint, I enjoy a lot of things and many of them are very diverse

I have also played chess forever .. and though not as good as Preiserone, but I too can be found on the FIDE ratinglist as well. (My style of playing chess reflects pretty much in my style of poker not surpricingly .. the KID and Dragon being what I always returned to .. )

My greatest pokermoments ?
Well there are a couple I guess .. The first is Donking my way into a MTT win ahead of 250 others winning 800$ after playing poker for two weeks (and for a while there I thought I could play poker .. LOL)

The second comes a half year later where I won a MTT without the Donk and spendt the money on a long weekend in Berlin with my girlfriend

But I have always been easy on life just taking every day as it comes and enjoying it

Oh .. and as a last comment .... I been reading a lot of pokerblogs lately, and I have to agree with Felicia, If you don’t have anything on your mind, then don’t write .. reading about results is the most boring thing I can think of

Getting my engineering degree as an adult is perhaps my proudest accomplishment, but if I had it to do again, I wouldn’t do it.

Same here. When going to The Univ. of Memphis, I had a wife, daughter, house and a nearly full-time job at FedEx working the 3rd shift in the Hub here in Memphis, while getting through engineering school. Looking back, I could never see myself doing that again. I guess I had a death wish, but life is good because of it.

Nice post Andy.

Re: How old are you? Where do you live?

Good thread. Well, I'm the old man of the fourm (Larry and DOC AZ, come back!) at 48.

Married coming up on 15 years, 3 kids ages 11, 8 and 3 months, live in Westchester, about 1/2 hour from NYC.

Work as an advertising writer/creative supervisor for a big agency. Write everything from Web sites to TV spots for big corporate clients.

Been playing poker in nickel dime home games my whole life. Got serious about five years ago.

Best poker accomplishement is being a significantly winning player.

Accomplishement I'm proudest of: co-writing two poker books:

The Pocket Idiot's Guide to Texas Hold'em

and (coming in April)

The Ultimate Guide to Poker Tells

Re: How old are you? Where do you live?

How old are you? WIll be 30 in September
Where do you live? Washington, DC
Are you married? Girlfriend/Boyfriend? Children? Girlfriend I met the first day of law school and have been going out for 5 years now and live together...no kids!
Occupation besides poker? Real Estate Attorney right now. Hopeful powerball winner in the future.
If studying (or if graduated), what and where? Syracuse undergrad, George Washington Law
Favorite movie? So many good ones....
Music? Really into indie rock right now...The Stills, The Shins, Elefant, Snow Patrol. Big Soul Coughing fan. Grew up in Buffalo so I like some Canadian music like The Lowest of the Low, Tragically Hip, Alun Pigguns....I could go on.
Best poker acomplishment? Nothing too exciting...taking 500 a couple years ago and adding a zero and then some is probably it. Got into the final 4 on a freeroll for a WSOP seat a couple months ago but blew it.
How long been playing? Sometime a little before that Moneymaker guy got on TV, otherwise I would probably be a hold em player.
