Just need ten responses (or however many come from this thread) for a paper in my Legal Studies class concerning the way law functions to influence people's behavior. In this case, it would be how do you know BEFORE you are actually getting arrested or actually driving. Go!

You dont have to stand or walk around to drive, so you need only be sober enough to sit upright and stay conscious. As long as you are able to sit straight up and not pass out you are good to drive.

I never put myself in the situation to have to make the decision. I will drive after 2-3 drinks with dinner.

When I woke up one morning and saw a bag of grease from Jack-in-the-Box that I was drunk enough to buy but too drunk to eat. That's my benchmark.

I never drink w/ even a single drop of alcohol in me. A couple months ago, I got stoned, and a few hours later, I gave myself a sobriety test to see if I could drive. I tried to balance on one leg with my knee lifted and my eyes closed, and didn't fair well. I ended up just staying the night at my friend's house.

If you don't remember several hours from the night including how you got home and it turns out you drove yourself home, you were prob to drunk to drive.

We have a breathalyzer at our place to test yourself if you think it's gonna be close.

I normally get very, very tired when I have too much to drink. I've had to get a ride home twice because I drank too much. Both times involved me waking up from an alcohol induced nap and asking for a ride myself. The times that I've been drunk that I WASN'T driving, I experienced the same effects.

So... if I haven't taken an involuntary nap prior to departure time, I'm pretty much driving.

when you crawl out of the bushes, find your car, figure out that its 4AM, you're cool to drive, because the cops look for drunks at 2AM, not 4AM, and I mean, you gotta get home somehow. Just drive exactly at the speed limit with hands at ten and two*, concentrating on keeping your car exactly two feet from the line marking your lane, checking your mirrors for cops and fully expecting a deer to run out in front of you. That's how careful you have to be. The drunker you are, the more effort this takes.

Just know your limit beforehand and drink accordingly. I only drive (slightly) drunk in my home town when I'm a mile away from my house, know all the back roads, and when there is no traffic.

I wasn't arguing it would be a bad idea. My head just exploded trying to figure out how it would be done. Knee-steering after a night of power-drinking must surely be -EV.

For me, there was one night where I woke up home, and to this day I have no idea how I got there. My buddy made it home, too. Neither of us should have been anywhere NEAR a car, or any other type of machine.

Do not bother to zip-up/button my pants
climb into car
begin honking to alert my friend
after 40-90 seconds the keys are in the ignition
say to friend: "you ready to do this?"

thats when I know i am too drunk to drive
