First trip to Atlantic City, which casinos?

First time going to a brick and mortar, and I am going to be up in NJ for the day so I figure why not hit up AC? But I havent been to a BM anywhere, so I need some advice on where to play. Strong tourney player, mainly sit n gos, have a ITM percentage of around 45+ (lately way over 50%, thanks to 2+2) I was planning on a bankroll of about 500, not sure what the tourney scene is like, but I also play well in cash game play too. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Re: First trip to Atlantic City, which casinos?

I've never played SnGs in AC, but I would guess you're better off just sticking to online. The rake on live tourneys is ridiculously high. I play multi table tourneys from time to time there, but it's hardly ever worth it. The structure always sucks, and the entry fee, like I said, is much higher than online. As far as poker rooms, I think the Borgata is pretty much the only option these days (not literally, but IMO, the Trop and the Taj are really fucking dirty. The Taj is okay, actually. The Trop depressed me so horribly last time I went there, I vowed off going there anymore. The pink chip game at the Trop is soft, but it sounds like it might be a bit over your br.

Re: First trip to Atlantic City, which casinos?

I suppose you could play a couple $50-$100 tournaments, but most of those have a really bad structure. I also wouldn't recommend live SNGs; the structure and the rake are terrible. You can play 1/2 NL anywhere....some of the smaller rooms like Hilton and Showboat might have better games and comps if that's all you are looking for. You don't really have the bankroll for NL, but if you are just going for the day I guess it doesn't really matter.

SNG at Wild Wild West. They start as soon as they fill up.
But only a moron would play in them.

It's your first trip to AC don't go to the Borgata.
Use your first trip to walk the boardwalk take in the sights
Start at the trop and walk down to the Taj
Or play poker at the Taj or trop and when finished take a buggy down the boardwalk.
Buy a 5.00 piece of pizza
Get your fortune told. (They are REAL psychics not the fake ms cleo ones on TV.) I once went to one she told me not to gamble or I would lose and I went home broke Well worth the 10.00

Not a bit. It's his first trip to AC he should take in the casinos their themes have a few drinks at each one walk the boardwalk stop in ripleys and play poker if he want's at any of the AC casinos Trop Taj BAllys...etc
The borgata is not AC and not what AC is about.BUT with the revitalization of the city (adding new stores etc etc) the Borgata is prob the future of AC but no matter what gets torn down or replaced at some point the focus will be back on the boardwalk area.

The borgata is to AC.....as The rio and palms are to the Vegas Strip

Put another way. Yeah it's a great place to go but who want's to waste all that time taking a cab, trolly, hitchhiking all that way for something i can get on the boardwalk (Strip)

Taj had 'no juice' SNGs this past weekend, might be worth calling in to see if the promotion will be available when you are visiting, otherwise just play 1-2.

I guess you're right. The Borg is a slice of 5-star Vegas on the Eastern Seaboard. It makes every other AC casino seem, well, like an AC casino.

I guess you're right. The Borg is a slice of 5-star Vegas on the Eastern Seaboard. It makes every other AC casino seem, well, like an AC casino.

[/ QUOTE ]

It's the OP's first trip to AC don't you think it would be better if he saw some of AC instead of your 5star slice of vegas. If he wanted to go to vegas he should go to vegas.

P.S. Your a poker player right vox so of course If he asked what was the best poker room in AC you would say the borgata I would say it too. If his OP said I want the best place to play poker in AC and I'm going to stay there all day. Then I would say the same as you go to the borgata.

To the OP I don't even know if the sands is open anymore but here's a rundown of 'SOME AC POKER'

Sands "small room" 1-5 stud, some limit 2-4 and 1 2 N/L non smoking ( I heard this place was going to be torn down so I don't know if it's open)

Ballys 1/2 NL 2/5 NL 1-5 stud assorted limit 2/4 up this is a smoking room or was

Trop huge room all limits and varietys has a bar in the room and drinks flow fast and furious you can go get them yourself if your in a real hurry if you could smoke in this room it would be godly mmmmmm booze and smoke. I hate poker nerds and their insistance on good games and bad players they should be more insistant on a smoking room with a lot of booze IT'S TRUE madame zola told me on the boardwalk

Taj Used to be the boss but the BORGATA IS BETTER yes vox your right borgata is the best in ac but a donkey would know that so your not special. Also no help to the OP either. Taj runs a variety of games and limits during USPC there are 1 table sngs all the time for the events.

Showboat. Very cramped IMO but the games are pushovers and I like the Red Tables and the computerized wait list. One day bus trips are also free to the showboat from martz stations in the area $20 fee $20 rebate on arrival

Borgata : The way AC can make itself better is to build up the area around the boardwalk and ocean front.

If 4 or 5 of the boardwalk casino's were torn down and built up Borgata style. It might put the borg out of business. But that's only what madame zola on the boardwalk told me for 10 bucks.
But the borg is the best place to play poker in AC now
but I still prefer the Trop with the quick booze or ballys where I can smoke
Booze + Poker = Winner (madame Zola) think about you you drink 150 dollars worth of booze in 24 hours and you lose 100 bucks at 2-4 that puts you 50 bucks ahead for the day

Don't listen to anyone telling you you should see some of AC, its a run down dirty slum with casinos, there's no reason to go anywhere but The Borgata.

If you are playing poker for the fun, then the sng's , but the rake and structure are terrible if you are looking to make money, basically they're for the tourists. Play cash games if you are trying to make money, bring about 1500-2000 if you want to play 1/2NL, its very soft, but the variance can be pretty high, so a 3-4 buy in swing isn't out of the ordinary for a winning player.

You don't need to 1500-2000 to play 1/2 NL for a day, but 500 might not be enough.

I actually like govman's idea. You don't really have the bankroll for any serious stakes; there are many casinos in AC that will offer the games in your price range. So why not sample a few casinos and see what you like? If you run bad, your money will last longer if you take a walk along the boardwalk in between buy-ins.

If you are looking to play middle or high limits, or a decently-structured MTT, Borgata is really the only place to go. But their 1/2 NL game is no better than anywhere else.

i didn't wanna say it first, but yeah man. my buddy got pistol whipped in broad daylight near the outlets. You can't walk around past 5 w/o a fat hooker asking you for money, but you can pawn gold 24 hours a day. And as to the variance on 1-2, it's true, but that is true of 1-2 at any B&M. You are going to get sucked out on. However, 500-600 is more than enough to buy in short a few times, enjoy yourself, and probably make some money.

Since the OP is only going for a day trip, I agree with going to the Borg. I wouldn't go anywhere else except for the fact that I can't afford to stay there (or at least don't want to pay that much) and I can't get the poker rate for a room anymore. When I'm staying for a weekend or longer, I like staying at the Trop, which also allows me to hit some other rooms like the Taj for a change, and I can still drive over to the Borg after putting my 4 hours in at the Trop.

I'm glad you made up your mind. Enjoy the Borgata and AC but please don't base your decision on thinking AC is a dump and your gonnna get pistol whipped. Thousands and Thousands of people every day go to atlantic City via bus car or whatever spaceship if your some of these posters.
You have the same chance of getting robbed in orange county as you do Atlantic City.

The problem here with some of the posters is they see a scruffy looking person or a black guy on the boardwalk and their hands instantly go to their wallet as they start walking away in fear. It's a joke.

Enjoy your first trip to the Borg and enjoy AC ALL THE POSTERS ARE CORRECT WHEN THEY SAY THE BORG IS THE CLASS OF AC but they are just being ignorant donks when it comes to the rest of AC. I happen to like my heroin, strippers, hookers, cocaine and LSD.

Parking is no problem in AC. The casinos have garages and/or street parking available. I think it is still 5 bucks for the Borgata garage.

As for my comments on AC, if you have time checkout the boardwalk and a few of the casinos on it. If you just want to play poker, go to Borgata.

The boardwalk casinos seem to be full of the bused in sr. citizen crowd breathing through cigarettes whenever I'm down there. If thats the kind of things you're interested it, go for it.

But if you're on short time and just there to gamble, go to Borg and don't leave.

punkass 10-10-2006 09:19 AM

Re: First trip to Atlantic City, which casinos?

Parking is $5, and you pay on your way out at the Borgata. If you're leaving and planning on coming back that day or visiting another casino that day, get a receipt. You can use the receipt once as a transfer for free parking. It expires 6am the next day.

For first time in AC, with nothing but playing poker, go to Borgata and know that it is the best place. If you lose all your money soon, then you can hang out at the boardwalk and the other stuff like that.

BriMc 10-10-2006 11:41 AM

Re: First trip to Atlantic City, which casinos?

Use the surface lot, the entrance to the casino from there is right by the poker room, short walk, less time wading through the 2 million slot machines. I've never used the garage, but I'm pretty sure the walk to the poker room is much longer from there. 5 bucks for parking, paid when you leave like other posters said.
