Sorry, slight hijack, I need to vent.

Watching people cry at funerals for dogs and horses while thousands of chidren are starving to death and being molested every day makes me want to puke.

This is River (this was her name before we picked her, meant to be obviously). She's about 2 1/2 years old, a sheppard/boxer mix. She's only about 35lbs, but looks bigger in the pictures. We got her from an animal shelter.

you know people who hold funerals for dogs and horses?

is this an event that they invite people to? is there a casket? free food? drinks?

is this normal?

I always thought you buried your dead animals in your backyard with a couple stones piled up over the grave... or had the vet dispose of the body.

I'm totally an animal person and have loved every pet I got.

I find it humorous when people say they "love" a pet.

I'm referring to memorial services for police dogs and horses that seem to be showing up on my local newscasts more frequently. (complete with pictures of said animal and crying humans)

I cried when my previous dog died. Is that strange to you?

Why do you spend your time posting on an internet message board while thousands of children are starving to death and being molested every day?

Being judgemental about what other people care about and how they express their feelings is absurdly arrogant.

The only dog I had when I was a kid was a Siberian Husky. This one looks similar to mine.

Wow, you must be a spectacular human being. I cried when our first family dog got lymphoma and had to be put to sleep. But, I'd also cry if my kids were starving or got molested. I hope you don't think any less of me.

Am I the only person here who thinks it's a bit bizarre to have a memorial service for a dog complete with pictures and news coverage?

I guess I'm just a terrible human being.

In general I probably agree with you, but the people who are closest to me are infinitely more important to me than any animal could be.

I think some people fail to make that distinction. At least it seems that way to me.

I feel sad that anyone would have an animal and not cry when it died. They must not have cared much for it when it lived, or maybe just have problems.

By cry, do you mean showing emotional compassion, or just the physical act of crying? I think this statement is a pretty snap judgement to make about how people deal with their own grief about their pets.

[/ QUOTE ]

Maybe I'm a little sad that they would deal with their grief in a way other than crying, even if it doesn't happen right away. It has taken me many years to come to the point of getting a cry out about this or that thing. I think I would have been better off just getting it over with right away.

But I was more addressing people who don't feel much grief rather than people who don't know what to do with it, or handle it in some way more arcane or in need of explanation than a simple honest cry. I haven't been much of a cryer in life myself, and sometimes that's been a good thing, but overall I think I'd rather feel too much, and maybe even cry too much, than feel too little or cry too little, if that makes any sense.

Yep you've kinda taken the fun out of this thread. The only time i've ever cried due to a death was when my puppy died when i was about 6 years old.

On the subject of dog pictures: they've gone out for a walk at the moment, i'll take some when they're back.
