The Gibraltar Conspiracy
On Oct 2nd, the London Times broke the story that
888.com and PartyGaming would likely be pulling out of the US market according to their "industry source". Gambling911 also reports that PartyGaming would follow 888.com and pokerstars would also likely follow... All 3 of these companies are in Gibraltor. Reps from Gibraltor must have put the pressure on these companies to pull-out...It is far too coincidental. I believe pokerstars realizes what is going on, and may possibly consider relocation. Also as a side note, Pacific Poker is owned by the same company that owns 888.com..The company is called Cassava Ent. and of course they reside in Gibraltor. |
Re: The Gibraltar Conspiracy
I thought PS was Isle of Man
Nope from there site: PokerStars is a registered legal business located in San José, Costa Rica. We abide by the laws and regulations where we do business. |

Re: The Gibraltar Conspiracy
I just dont get how you spelled Gibraltar correctly in the subject, however you spelled it incorrectly in the post?

Re: The Gibraltar Conspiracy
Good one, except PokerStars is headquartered on the Isle of Man and many of its operations are located in Costa Rica.

Re: The Gibraltar Conspiracy

Its still odd though that Party,888 and Pacific have all pulled out. |

They have pulled out because they are public companies, traded on a stock exchange, with regulations that include complyng with laws of all countries that the companies have dealings in. As far as being located in Gibraltar, there are corporate disclosure and accounting benefits to that situs even though it is a UK country. |
Re: The Gibraltar Conspiracy
Just on a side note, Mansion is also located in Gibraltar (which is why it was the first, and so far only, site I've cashed out of).

[/ QUOTE ] I understand the corporate angle...So actually they are somewhat related...It still can make a difference on where the corp. is located..For example, if they were in the Bahamas, they'd be less likely to jump out imo.. So out of all the companies that announced they are pulling out...Which ones are private vs public AND where are they located? So far Ive only seen Crypto pull out (outside of Gibraltar) and they are in Canadian public company, which makes sense too. |

Re: The Gibraltar Conspiracy
Have party and pacific definately pulled out? I heard they may just stop taking US deposits, but still allow current players to play.
|
Re: The Gibraltar Conspiracy
Maybe it's the UK government laying pressure on the sites. Gibralter and the Isle of Man are both UK dependencies and of course Party and 888 are listed on the London Stock Exchange and Stars were thinking of listing on the LSE Maybe Bush has been telling Blair what to do again.

Re: The Gibraltar Conspiracy
I just called Pacific Poker and they said that they aren't planning on suspending any players accounts. She said they are aware of the act but have no plans at this time to suspend accounts. At Party Poker, I am still playing, in fact I'm playing right now. Would it be safe to change my address to that of a European one so when my account does get suspended they won't try to send me a check? If I changed my account to a European address would I have a problem?

I worked in Gib so I know. [/ QUOTE ] True, and they were declining in numbers so the British army shipped in a few more. You can't be too carefull! [/ QUOTE ] So true. We took a special cave tour and the guide told us a very interesting, and true, story. The rock of Gibraltar was caused by an earthquake. The Strait of Gibraltar is about 15 miles wide to the other side (Africa). The cave line runs directly north south and lines up with the other Pillar of Hercules in Africa. That's background. So the story goes like this. A monkey is said to have crossed through the cave network from Africa to Gibraltar and that is how the apes populated Gibraltar. Under the sea, through the total darkness fissures, fifteen miles of toil and trouble. And this is why these apes are so respected. Ask anyone in Gibraltar. It is all true. And this is why Party, 888, and everyone else conspired to exit the poker market at the same time. |
Re: The Gibraltar Conspiracy
PokerStars is owned by a Costa Rican parent and presently operated out of the Isle of Man.
As for the others, Gibraltar is a tiny overseas territory of the United Kingdom. It is not calling the shots on much of anything, including this issue. |

They regard the US market as lost unless the regulations change. They're aware that online gambling is regarded as borderline smutty in Europe, and want to portray themselves as squeaky clean in this market. The risks of continuing to operate in the US are manifold : They might lose investors. They might lose European customers, who don't want to indulge in anything that might be seen as illegal. EU countries might follow suit with legislation if they don't show themselves to be transparently honest businesses. Plus the directors don't want to get arrested next time they visit the US..... |
