I woke up at like 4 in the afternoon and didn't eat until 5 if that counts.

Re: For Jews Did you Fast Today?

I never fast. My metabolism is so high that I freak out if I haven't eaten in six hours. If I try 24 I go ballistic. When I was a kid and tried to do it, I would just throw up around 2-3 in the afternoon. But it would just be liquids or dry-heaving.

These days the low-blood-sugar thing just gets me irritable and panicky. Screw that crap.

If it makes me a bad Jew because I need to sustain my metabolic functions and enjoy nutrients, then so be it. I'll see you guys in hell, etc.

Oh, also I don't believe in God and I eat pork and meat with dairy and I've had plenty of premarital sex, mostly with white Christian, black, or Asian girls, and I don't go to synagogue anymore and I play poker on Friday nights/Saturday afternoons and I don't think gay people are sinners and none of the meat I eat is kosher.

If that makes me a bad Jew, then so be it.

I'll go out on a limb and assert that they're more in line with european values than with the values of most of the countries that surround Israel.

I was feeling a little sick today, and not eating was easier than usual. However not drinking was horrible.

My father was raised orthodox Jewish, but observes no religion. My mother was raised Catholic, but converted so that they could be married by a rabbi so that my dad's parents would be happy. I have never been to temple, nor did I have a bar-mitzvah. In practice, I'm basically a nihilist. Am I Jewish?

If yes, then no, I did not fast. If I'm not indeed Jewish, ignore this reply. But I wish someone could clear up the issue for me, because when people ask me if I'm Jewish I need an easier answer.

If your mother converted to judaism then you are jewish (anyone with a jewish mother is jewish). Now depending on who you ask her conversion may or may not be valid. If she converted orthodox most won't contest it.

And I fasted for sha. No shul though.

According to some Jews having a Jewish mother is a prerequisite for being Jewish, but it does not automatically mean that someone is Jewish. If somebody has a Jewish mother but is an atheist, they are not Jewish.

Fasting has nothing to do with how you act towards other people. Its to attone for sins against G-d.

And tradition, dude, tradition.

i just realized that this use to happen to me, my metabolism is ridiculously high (im 19, 5'11 and about 160) and when i use to not eat, i would almost feel 'high' extremely light headed and the only thing that would make me feel better is to eat whatever the hell i could find, and fast.

My family is a lot more traditional than I am. They fast, and resume arguing violently with each other at sundown.

Can you honestly tell me that you follow every single tradition to the T? Keeping kosher, no premarital sex, etc... To me it's more important to be a good person in everyday life than follow a prescribed list of rules written thousands of years ago. But that's just me.

As you can tell I'm not horribly religious.

I fasted as I have every year since I was 11.

However, I am on post-surgery medication that I am required to take every morning so I had a sip of water to swallow the pill, which is the first time I have had water during Yom Kippur in 27 years.

Correct me if I am wrong but I thought you were implying that jews are against premarital sex but as far as I know they have no problem with it.

Also, the false duplicity in your argument (that one could be bad all year long and fast or that someone could be good all year) is ridiculous. I believe that fasting is to atone for your sins and because Jews are a lawyerly people they have filled the loophole that you should also atone for sins that others have made (in prayr you apologize for "the sins that I have committed before thee" and you apologize for even the sins that you personally have not committed)

Even for non-observent Jews I like the tradition of fasting as it gives people cause to think about things that they have done right and wrong over the past year (you are supposed to apologize to others who you have wronged over the past year) and to think about if they want to live their lives differently in the coming year.

That introspective viewpoint that fasting encourages should have a positive effect on ones quality of life.

Note: Please correct any factual inaccuracies in my above statements.

If you're sick a rabbi will tell you how much to eat/drink and at what intervals.
