The Bill will not work...
According to this:
[ QUOTE ] NEW YORK (AFP) - US lawmakers' high-stakes and morally charged offensive on Internet gamblers has as much chance of success as America's 1920s Prohibition against alcohol, several analysts said. [/ QUOTE ] http://www.netscape.com/viewstory/2006/1...&frame=true |

Re: The Bill will not work...
In the long term, I agree 200%, this genie is out of the bottle.
In the short term, players will be severely impacted. |

Re: The Bill will not work...
These are the ojective and long term disussions that will ensue in the weeks ahead. Let's face it boys, you yanks taught us how to be free and gamble. Poker is all yours baby. It ain't gettin' folded that easy. Didn't y'all start the internet too? Give it some time like the link says. You'll be dealt in sooner than you think.

Re: The Bill will not work...
Obviously the bill is going to have a huge impact on the major sites' revenue stream for the short term and perhaps much longer. But I'm wondering if pro players will really be as impacted as we think. People have been making a living at poker since Doyle's days of getting raided by the feds or robbed by mobsters. Certainly it won't be laid out for us on silver platter as much. But to resourceful players - a good living may still be out there - even in the near term.

prohibition was in effect for like 10 yrs.

lol at comparing prohibition to banning internet gambling [/ QUOTE ] I think it's a very apt comparison indeed. An activity that many people consider a "vice," that millions engage in but one that people hesitate to speak out in support of, because of its iffy social reputation, going from legal to illegal, not necessarily with the support of the general public but rather because of the political work of special interests. Do I mis-state? |

prohibition was in effect for like 10 yrs. [/ QUOTE ] Exactly. I'm not good enough to be a pro, just good enough to live comfortably while I'm in college. I have no desire to go pro. In ten years, poker will be the last thing on my mind. |

[/ QUOTE ] I don't think that is at all obvious except for the sites that have chosen to prohibit US players and quite frankly the other sites will likely take up the slack. |

Re: The Bill will not work...
In terms of it turning to shadier elements once the law is in effect, I think it's a good comparison.

[ QUOTE ] lol at comparing prohibition to banning internet gambling [/ QUOTE ] what would you compare it to [/ QUOTE ] Wasn't prohibition an ammendment to the constitution?? Not just your everyday new law thats passed. That came to an end since we love our booze and we sure as hell love our poker too. |
