PPL show

Daniel Negreanu's latest blog describes a new show that the Professional Poker League will be putting on coming up pretty soon. Sounds like an interesting show so far, but more details will be nice to find out more about it.

I'm sure all those details will come out shortly after 10/7.

Re: PPL show

I do know that Evelyn Ng made the cut for PPL Season 1, but Clonie Gowen and Liz Lieu did NOT.

There is a quota on the number of seats reserved for women.

I would assume that Jen Harman and Annie Duke got in, but Kathy Liebert probably did NOT (because she has one of the worst reputations in the industry).

The PPL is basically-positioned as a "PPT-killer", designed specifically so that PPT Season 2 will NEVER see the light of day unless WPTE buys TV time in the US to air the PPT (which I do NOT believe will happen.)

(Needless to say, many of WPTE's enemies are involved in the PPL project.)

Las Vegas Sands Corporation (LV Sands), which is chaired by Sheldon Adelson, the 3rd richest man in the world behind Bill Gates and Warren Buffett, is one of the backers of the PPL.

LV Sands owns the Venetian and the Sands Expo Convention Center in Las Vegas, and is developing the Palazzo on the corner of Las Vegas Blvd. and Sands Avenue (Hence the name Las Vegas Sands.)

LV Sands has a nosebleed valuation in the stock market for one reason and one reason ONLY: Adelson has "bet the farm" on CHINA. The Sands Macau is now the #1 casino in the world in terms of gaming revenue, and the $2.5 Billion Venetian Macau is scheduled to open by the end of 2007.

Re: PPL show

FYI Oliver, you may want to fix that macro or whatever you're using. Adelson's the 3rd richest person in the US, not the world. World's Richest people. (Yes that list is old (as of 2/06) but I don't think everyone above him on the list dropped below him in net worth).

Re: PPL show

Dn talked about this a little bit more on his forums, here are the quotes:

[ QUOTE ]
Yes I am a captain. There will also be women in the league. So it won't exactly be the "top 64 players" in the world as certain slots will be given to women. Nothing against the ladies, but there simply aren't 8 women players that would rank in the top 64 IMO. Uh oh, now ladies will hate me too, lol blush.gif

Having said that, it's likely that my co-captain will actually be a lady. Luckily for me, she is a player that would rank in the top 64 easily.

I can assure you of one thing, Ivey and I will not be co-captains. That might be a little unfair to the other teams IMO.

[/ QUOTE ]

[ QUOTE ]
Btw, the format will play a lot more like a cash game than a tournament. You won't necessarily see a "winner" at the end of each show- at least not in the traditional sense.

Blinds likely won't go up either...

[/ QUOTE ]

Im liking the sound of this show quite a bit.

Re: PPL show

The Professional Poker LEAGUE (PPL) has officially accomplished its first objective as the "PPT-killer".

http://img.worldpokertour.com/pptbulletin/6.pdf

I would be very surprised to see the PPT re-surface in the U.S.

As I expected, WPTE will NOT buy its own TV time to air the PPT in the U.S. as long as WPTE is still getting CASH from The Travel Channel to air the WPT. Doing so would devalue the WPT TV product in the U.S. market.

Perhaps the PPT concept might be a better fit when WPTE takes its shot at CHINA in 2008.

Re: PPL show

I stand corrected with regards to the Professional Poker LEAGUE (PPL).

According to one source, Liz Lieu got IN. Clonie Gowen is an alternate at this point.

Kathy Liebert is definitely OUT.

I also have confirmation that Greg Raymer is OUT.

Kevmath 09-28-2006 02:55 PM

Re: PPL show

Seems not all of the WPT enemies got into the league.

What will be interesting is who's actually involved in this thing. Speaking of which, how many of the 64 will be women Oliver, since you mentioned earlier there was a "quota".

Guess it would've helped to read above my post, doh!

Didn't DN say he was a big part of the PPL?

If so then it doesn't surprise me that Greg is out.

I think that's unfortunate for everyone involved. Greg is obviously very marketable.

If that's the case, it doesn't bode well for the other 6 in the WPT lawsuit.

I am kinda curious what they used to determine the top 64, minus the 8 woman.(assuming it is 8)

That's a very good question IMHO.

If it was chosen on pure talent or a combination of that and marketability etc.

According to Negreanu there are 8 women. (see a few posts above this one) I think its funny that he admitted this tournament(??) isn't the best 64 players in the world because there aren't 8 women in the top 64. Of course it's true but I'm suprised that he actually admitted it.

One source tells me that the selection process was heavily politicized, which explains why:

1. Evelyn Ng got IN while Kathy Liebert, who was among the top 2 or 3 money-earners during the 2005-2006 tournament poker season, was left OUT

2. Greg Raymer was left OUT, presumably because of his feud with Daniel Negreanu

Welcome to the entertainment industry, "poker players".

Re: PPL show

Men

Doyle Brunson
Todd Brunson
Phil Ivey
Alan Cunningham
Men Nguyen
Daniel Negreanu
Mike Mausow
Juha helpi
Harry Demetrieu
David Benyamine
Carlos Mortenson
David Oppenheim

Women

Jen Harmon
Kathy L
Annie D
K Gazes

A good start? I realize there are a couple unexpected ones. That I could try to defend but maybe they'd only make sense to me.

Also sorry Kev. I started a new thread cause I thought I was hijacking this one.

Re: PPL show

The difference between the top 64 and the 64 that'll actually be on the PPL broadcasts is a large one. When the list comes out on the 7th (or leaked before that), it surely will be cause for much discussion.

olivert 09-28-2006 03:38 PM

Re: PPL show

Looks like Liz Lieu's decision to politically align herself with Las Vegas Sands/Venetian paid off.

I was told two week ago by one of the "queens of poker gossip" that she was out, but now I am told by a source much closer to the PPL that Liz Lieu is IN.

That discussion is completely irrelevant.

The 64 players "chosen" for the PPL were rewarded for their ability to play "the poker game behind the poker game", not for their ability to play "poker the card game".

Again, you are analyzing the PPL project from a "poker player's" perspective, while I am looking at the PPL project from the "entertainment industry observer's" perspective.

Guess what? The PPL is an "entertainment" product, not a "poker" product.

It does NOT matter to the "entertainment industry" that the PPL does not have the "64 best poker players in the world".

The PPL only needs to have "64 of the best poker players in the world".

See the difference?

I totally agree. I started my list and I'm sure I'll make changes to it. As I was doing it I was thinking I was basing it on tournament NLHE. But if it's going to be more like a cash game atmosphere then who knows?

Re: PPL show

One other important industry note:

If anyone was wondering when Las Vegas Sands Corporation would get into the TV poker business, that time has arrived.

LV Sands has tossed its hat into the ring with the PPL TV poker product to compete in the marketplace against Harrah's WSOP (which is allied with ESPN) and MGM Mirage (which is allied with WPTE).

Think of the PPL as the "next generation" invitation-only all-star made-for-TV poker "sports entertainment television" product compared to Poker SuperStars or the PPT, but with Las Vegas Sands (Sheldon Adelson) putting up money to back the project instead of NewsCorp (Rupert Murdoch) or WPTE (Steve Lipscomb/Lyle Berman).

Again, the PPL has already accomplished the objective of killing off the PPT, even before PPL has even filmed one minute of TV.

Among those who have been selected to be part of the PPL are 2004 CardPlayer Magazine Player of the Year Daniel Negreanu, 2003 World Poker Tour (WPT) Ladies Night I runner-up Evelyn Ng, and high-stakes cash game "diva" Liz Lieu, according to multiple sources.

However, among the notable players who were not selected for the PPL are 2004 World Series of Poker (WSOP) Main Event World Champion Greg "Fossilman" Raymer and 2005-2006 WPT Season 4 leading female money-earner Kathy Liebert.

I'll take a stab at it

The "You Know who" drinking Game

Take 1 Drink
-Everytime "You Know who" makes a post
-Everytime a post plugs his website/ an article he wrote on amother website
-Everytime a post includes TV ratings. (drink 2 if the ratings are or are later proven to be incorrect)
-Everytime he mentions Poker in another country
-Everytime he mentions "the death of Poker"
-Everypost about Endorsement deals.

Take 2 Drinks
- Everytime "You Know who" veers completely off topic and starts ranting about something no one cares about. (drink an extra drink his response is one the
first 5 responses to the OP.)
- Everytime "You Know who" mentions China. (If China is in all caps or boldfaced take an additional drink)
- Everytime uses the phrases: Time Buy, Macau, Lipscomb, Sexton, Orenstein, Poker School, "PPT Killer" or WPTE.
- Every post he makes about who was invited to invite only event that no one cares about (i.e. WPT ladies night) (Drink 2 additional for
every post after the first one)
- Every post about the difference between "Poker players" and "entertainment talent"

Take 3 drinks
- Everytime he insults a poster on this forum.
- Everytime he mentions working for ESPN.
- Anytime he makes a post that says the exact same thing an earlier post said.
- Anytime he give incorrect information and is corrected by Kevmath (or anyone else)
- For every post about WPTE trying to dominate the poker world
- For every post about Dutch Boyd or the NCAA

Ignignokt 09-29-2006 04:16 PM

Re: PPL show

I already think people are going to get seriously trashed playing this game (even more than they did playing the Ed Miller/Queer Eye drinking game!). But a couple of additions:

- Take 2 every time he avoids a question asking him for news on his quest to interview Dutch Boyd.

- Take 2 whenever he's corrected by someone else, but refutes that correction for an irrelevant reason.

You need to ask Kathy Liebert's former agent, Lisa Tenner of Tenner Associates, for the details of how Ms. Liebert allegedly walked out of her endorsement contract with PartyPoker.NET in order to sign with InterPoker.NET.
