Videogame Canon: Sega Genesis

- Sonic the Hedgehog
- NBA Live '95
- Madden (which one?)
- Phantasy Star 2

That's all I know, I didn't own a Genesis until 1999. Genesis was big for sports, so there might be more of them that should go here. I can't think of any other non-sports games that should.

Genesis threw me for a minute there.

NBA Live '95 was unreal, I played it non-stop for years. Sonic 2 was great, Micro Machines 2 Tournament Edition was great, WWF Royal Rumble was great. Good times.

'94 NHL

EDIT: This is really the pinnacle of Genesis for me. I guess Sonic or Echo or something screams, "Genesis!" to most people since Sonic was supposed to be their signature franchise and I remember Echo being a big deal, but for me it doesn't get better than NHL '94.

I also really liked Shadowrun, I thought that game was incredible.

Fifa 95 was good. Pressing C after you scored to hear the GOOOOAAALLLLL! ruled.

Re: Videogame Canon: Sega Genesis

In addition to WWF Royal Rumble, WWF Raw. More wrestlers and a couple of new moves. No Million Dollar Man though.

Sonic 1-2, not a big fan fo 3 but I could see why people would mention it.

MKI-III were solid games.

Joe Montana '94, I want to say, was pretty fun.

NBA Jam + TE were also very solid.

Re: Videogame Canon: Sega Genesis

Definition of "canon" from Wikipedia:

[ QUOTE ]
The Western canon is a canon of books, music and art (and specifically one with very loose boundaries) that is thought by many to have been highly influential in shaping Western culture. It is a list of the greatest works with significant literary and artistic merit. The selection of a canon is important to the theory of educational perennialism and the development of high culture.

[/ QUOTE ]

As you can see, this narrows the field down a bit. Games like Sonic 2 or WWF games do not make the cut. Only highly original, influential, and truly great games are "canon".

EA Sports PGA European Tour game was sweet with courses such as Valderrama, Crans-sur-Sierre and Wentworth. It was also the first golf console game that I'm aware of that offered match play.

I don't think so...they're not terribly significant if you look at the entire videogaming landscape. If you're looking at strictly Genesis games, yes, but we're looking at videogames as a whole. Some systems may have only one game that is truly canonical.

NHL 94

I was godly with Larry Murthy (a defender in Pittsburg). Come from the left and go right. And then hold on to C while you aim to the left. Instant score.

Sonic 2 was great too but I could never collect everything which sort of bugged me.

RBI '94 was a great game. Homerun derby, spitballs, and all that. They had some feature where you got put in different game situations and had to do something specific. Good stuff.

Both NBA Jams.

It is sad how many of you are saying arcade games that were turned into console games. MK doesn't belong in this discussion. It belongs in the Arcade Canon for sure, but it is a non event in the discussion of the Genesis. Same goes for NBA jam and many others.

I could be wrong about this, but I think Joe Montana sports talk football was the first game to have announcers.

A friend and I used to play it all the time and we would run the fake punt every play for huge gains against the CPU and the announcer would always say, "its first down and I can't believe it..." always dumbfounded that we were going to punt on first down when we'd run the play over and over.
