How many young players out there actually make it???
How many players out there actually make it starting out with like 200 in their roll and working up to where they can play 1000 NL someday. I put in 200 bucks last week and got it up to 1000 and now am back down at 700 or so playing 25 NL, and with rakeback, should be around 1000 at the end of the month. Without winning a huge tourney (which I've tried to do unsuccessfully) is it possible to build your roll high enough to maybe make a nice second income someday, or is variance just too great??

Re: How many young players out there actually make it???
i'm one of those kids. started with 50$ on pokerstars playing stud8. i was down to my last 7$ at one point. i am pretty sure i would have never gambled again if i lost that last 7. kind of funny now that i look back.
i honestly haven't had that much success. my lifetime winnings add up to 5 figures and have a way to go before they become 6 (though that is my goal for this year) to answer your question a bit: the vast majority of players don't think about bankrolls or building up. so the answer is very very few (i am thinking less than 1% imo). though i bet a lot of the people that did not succeed just bought in for 50-100$ a few times. maybe they won a bit or maybe they lost. at any rate, it was never their goal to parlay that 100$ investment into a 10/20 bankroll. |
Re: How many young players out there actually make it???
me... $20 bankroll into 6 figures. i love bragging.

Re: How many young players out there actually make it???
you've asked different questions.
is it possible to build your roll high enough to maybe make a nice second income someday?? Yes. It's definitely possible. or is variance just too great?? No. Variance is not too great to accomplish this. Variance can actually help you get there faster if you're one of the fortunate ones. How many young players out there actually make it??? Quite a few. But not nearly as many as those who don't make it. |
Re: How many young players out there actually make it???
+1 for me

Re: How many young players out there actually make it???
Most fail, but you don't hear about them so much as the incredibly successful ones.

Re: How many young players out there actually make it???
It seems like most of the success stories, ZeeJustin, Ozzy_87, Action_Jeff, they all one won huge tournies to get their roll started, and little do you hear about the guys like me who deposit 200 bucks and try to be patient and build up slowly moving up stakes. Hopefully I will be able to sustain the patience and do so. Does that ever work? Wouldn't it be so nice if I could win a huge tourney liek they all did, but hey, life sucks...

Re: How many young players out there actually make it???
I think you'd have better luck building a 5 fig roll w/o MTT's.

Re: How many young players out there actually make it???
I deposited $100 to play limit HE on Party. I started at 0.5/1 and worked my way up to playing the middle limits. This month I have played 10/20 through 20/40. I have been a winner at every level I have played, though I have had to continually learn more to keep moving up. I don't see any limit to my progression at this point, but I am also aware that I will need to keep improving significantly if I want to continue to move up.

Re: How many young players out there actually make it???
i bought into a live 5-10 limit game with 150$ of my own and 100$ worth of borrowed money. I had nearly 70$ is singles from tips at the bottom of my stack and i was down into them several times, winning every hand that i put a single into i ended up nearly 200$ for the night.
That was four years ago, now i multitable 10/20 and 20/40 limit for a living. My biggest strangth? Bankroll management . |

Re: How many young players out there actually make it???
I understand my situation may be very different, but what kinda timeframe are we talking here before you or your guys "friends you know" moved from low stakes nickel and dime online poker if you will to high, profit yeilding poker...just curious, as I said I know I could very well take a much shorter or longer time as there are so many variables...

[/ QUOTE ] Well I win more $/hand than any of the young guys here but like two , but it took me a solid 6+ months of dicking around in small stakes games without any real purpose, and then another 1+ yr of studying and learning the game and working hard at it to get to the point of finally making what you might call "real" money (ie $100-300/hr range) and now there is no looking back. There are some who have won $100,000 in like 3-4 months of experience, and some of them are actually really good players, but they have benefitted tremendously from lots of good luck whenever they try moving up to a new limit. They have accelerated quickly, ran hot, and been fearless in calculated risk taking. addendum: the "Well I win more $/hand than any of the young guys here but like two" was sarcasm. It's actually more like 4 or 5. |

Bankroll management is probably the single most important aspect to becoming a successful, winning player. |
Re: How many young players out there actually make it???
If you are reasonably intelligent and work real hard on your game, then lots of people have achieved the following:
1) A couple of months dicking around in microlimits and bonus whoring 2) A few months slowly bankroll building and learning fundementals in small stakes 3) Moving up to the mid limits around 6 months to a year and a half later, where you can earn a good wage (i.e. more than 90% of the population), playing out of a 5-figure bankroll that you have built up from scratch. This is definately achievable for most people, but like most things in life, it all depends on how hard you work at it. |
Re: How many young players out there actually make it???
i don't have a 100k roll but i went from a $50 deposit to having a bankroll for multitabling 10/20 limit in about six months without winning a tournament and just playing limit HE.
i am a college student and live at home so i don't have many bills, but i make a perfectly good living off of poker. not taking out student loans is definately a plus. |

Re: How many young players out there actually make it???
I started out with a couple hundred dollars in the middle of the summer of 04. I grinded it out at 7 card SNG's until I got enough money to play 1/2. After that it was move up when you have 500 BB and don't move back down no matter what. Now, the only bankroll I have to worry about is my emotional bankroll.
Personally, I think the most important idea to learn is to never touch your bankroll. So many times during the first semester back after playing poker I was eating ramen and staying in on weekends because I didn't have 10 dollars for the cover for some party my fraternity would be hosting. I had a few friends who had the potential to play 100/200 by now, but instead they took their bankrolls and spent it on car repairs or bills, and now they don't play poker anymore or play low stakes. If you don't touch your bankroll, you will get a great opportunity to make a ton of money really quickly, but at the cost of your soul. So just be careful. Also, I'd just like to say that those poker players with >$1 million that are investing in stocks and stuff are morons. |
Re: How many young players out there actually make it???
i love bragging too because it is uh inspiring for everyone =) 100 -----> 6 figures in a year. my advice: just study hard on this site and play a lot of hands. also early on live poker helped me roll tremendously, moving from 4 figures to like 20k, foxwoods 1/2 nl did that for me. after that just move up at 20 buyins (i'm a nl player) and don't look back. now i play at games i'm way overrolled for which feels a heck of a lot better than being uncomfortable losing a stack or two.

To imply that ZeeJustin just happened to hit a couple of big tournament scores is pretty silly. As I understand it, he grinded his way up and worked pretty hard at improving his game. Eventually doing quite well in the 200+15 SNG's (8-tabling perhaps) and also heads-up tourneys. Zee ALSO happened to hit a couple other big scores. But these were on top of (and mostly after) he had pretty much proven himself to be quite a solid player. |

in fact zj was 12 tabling the 215s i believe.

Re: How many young players out there actually make it???
Thought I remembered reading that too but wasn't positive.
And I think he was considered to be one of the best SNG and heads-up tourney players on 2+2 this side of gigabet. This didn't happen by accident at all. he worked his ass off AND wasn't exactly dumb to begin with. |

Re: How many young players out there actually make it???
I certainly wasn't implying that ZJ didn't work hard or that he wasn't a fantastic player to begin with, which he obviously is, just that some MTT scores really aided his roll and let him 12 table the 215's comfortably...am I wrong here??

[/ QUOTE ] Yes. Doing well in the 215's, (and lower levels on the way up) allowed him to 12-table the 215's. He was a winning lower-mid level cash game player before this too. |

Re: How many young players out there actually make it???
tongni im not really sure if i agree with this. if youre good enough to beat 100/200 then you should be good enough to make $250-$300/hr playing 15/30 or 20/40. at that rate you should have a bankroll for 100/200 in only a few months. i think living off ramen noodles just so you get a chance to play in the big game is kinda silly. besides, for most people 30/60 is going to be far more profitable then 100/200 anyway. id rather live well and play 30/60 then be poor playing 100/200 hoping im good enough at that level to make money. to each his own though, but i think recommending that people live this way is poor advice.
