What would u do if you had it all?

Let's say you had 3 months starting Octobert 1st when you return from UB Aruba tournament. You had hundreds of thousands in the bank and decided you were going to take at least one semester off from school (not dropping out, taking time off). You wanted to do a lot of traveling. Not to Paris and London etc, but to places you might not go normally. You also wanna add a community service aspect to your trip, and want to make sure you meet other people around the age of 20. This is my situation.

Here are some things I want to do:

Learn to ski in scandenavia / switzerland.
Do community service trip for 2-4 weeks in either Thailand or Brazil (Cross cultural solutions)
Do habitat for humanity trip to New Orleans (1 week, October 1-7)
Go to Israel
Just check out all of Asia - Maybe start with the community service in thailand and spend a month going around to australia, japan, china, etc.

What else would YOU do if you had all this time and had no financial constraints. And do you have any advice for me?

If your primary thrust for travelling to Scandenavia/Switzerland is to learn how to ski, I think you're just wasting your money. As a novice skier, you won't be able to appreciate (or handle really) 5% of the terrain which would make these places any better than a podunk ski area close to you. If, however, you are also going for the culture, then I say go for it.

Everything else on your list since like it would be a good experience.

I would buy some old junk car and restore it. I've wanted to do that for a long time.

Re: What would u do if you had it all?

I just got back form a 3 month trip to India, and SE Asia (Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam, Laos) and spent a hell of a lot less than you have... If you want to meet lots of 20 yr old people and have an awesome time, there is nothing better than this.

Also, learning to ski is simply a matter of getting off your ass and booking yourself a week long course. UCPA is one of the best organisations for arranging this, and they take complete beginners.

Im going to scandenavia/switzerland so that I can get an international setting with more interesting culture than say Vermont. Also, I just want to be in a foreign place for whatever reason. For the skiing does anyone have any good places that are good to learn to ski and have a young population?

I'd go on a "poker retreat", basically not leaving my home for a year while devoting 70% of my waking hours to improving my game. The other 30% would be studying finance/investments. I'd come up with somewhere between a 2 and 10 year plan to have ample investment income (supplied initially by poker winnings) and take the rest of my life off doing whatever appealed to me then. Every dollar you blow in your twenties could have been hundreds or thousands of dollars in later years when you could have made wiser use of the funds.

I wouldn't have even considered that in my 20's tho. 20/20 hindsight :|

I learned to snowboard in a week at Les Arcs in the French alps (really nice mountains), and it was mainly under 25 year olds. There really isn't much nightlife though, cos you want to be up bright and early for the slopes, plus by 9pm you are REALLY tired.

Very strong option as well. Build more and more monies until you can just retire to world travel.

I backpacked this summer for 2 months through europe. If I had longer, I would have done it the same way. I would probably have gone to asia and def. eastern europe with the extra time. Israel is a good idea if you've never been, beautiful country.

Have fun, and make sure to stay the hell out of my 2k games

ok - so what about thoughts in particular about doing a few countries in southeast asia. I'm a pretty social person but I'm still worried about being connected to other people. At the same time, I don't really want to do a cheesy program.

What about Israel - does anyone know of anything I could do for like 3 weeks there that I might find really cool? Again, something lowkey where I could network with people?

You can do Birthright Israel, which I think is offered over winter break. I met you at TS, you're Harry right?

Re: What would u do if you had it all?

just stay in hostels. Easiest way to meet people ever. I traveled with a buddy, but we ran into so many guys and girls doing it solo, and they had no problem. It gives you alot of freedom, and with sites like hostelworld.com you can make sure you have a decent place booked (book like 1-3 days before you leave for that city).

Re: What would u do if you had it all?

i know about hostels in europe - im talking more specifically about like southeast asia or any other remote(ish) place people think or know is cool. Specifically, waht kind of places do you stay in in thailand or india or china, or australia or japan. did people find it really easy to meet college aged kids around there and were they really weird kids or somewhat normal? and wtf do u do during the day - like i have backpacked europe, and lived in an apt this summer and that was a lot of just hanging out and site seeing and sitting in bars at 1 pm. what do u do in south east asia?

I would travel to exotic places. Like Tibet/India/Japan/Kenya/Kongo/Argentina etc. Like every place on earth you can think about where there isnt much violence but still very different from a normal western country. I would also travel light and cheap and try to meet the locals.

Re: What would u do if you had it all?

OP

Do you already own a home? If it were me this is what I would do first off with my hundreds of thousand dollars. In case you ever run across any difficulties you have a home (a nice home at that) paid for, you can take out loans on your mortage, you can sell it for a handsome profit, or if you decide to move rent it out.

If you already own a home and the couple hundred thousand is extra, I'd go somewhere else than this forum for advice on oversea countries. There are plenty of books you could get, but I'd bet if you googled it you'd find plenty of message boards and forums dedicated to this topic
