Just tilted away 15k, please help!
I've been having an absolutely horrible month which finally culminated in a 30/60 tilt session last night where I tilted away 10k. I had already lost 5k this week and just had the most horrible session of my life last night. I still have a decent sized roll but this really hurts. I guess I'm just looking for some words of encouragment or advice. I keep thinking that it will take me far too long to recover this money playing my normal limits so I'm afraid that I will go back to 30/60. What can I do? Thanks.

take a break

Re: Just tilted away 15k, please help!
Don't go back to 30/60, and take a break.
Take a few days off minimum. The games will be there when you're ready to come back. If you don't do both of those things you run a great risk of losing most or all of your roll. |
Re: Just tilted away 15k, please help!
Bill,
Sorry to hear this. Definitely take a break. Go to the beach. Or Zona Blue. -Michael |
Re: Just tilted away 15k, please help!
Definetely take a break and use the time to study. Let that money go or it will tear you up and you will probably give yourself little chance to win, it is probably a small amount in the life of your poker career.
Persue other interests so your mind is not on poker. Do other things that bring you joy such as movies, music, gardening, fishing, or spending time with friends and family. |
Re: Just tilted away 15k, please help!
Thanks for the replies, it just feels like months of playing hard down the drain. Trying to seperate myself from the money but its hard to fight the urges to move up and make the money back that I lost at those limits.
P.S. I hate the beach and Zona Blue |
Re: Just tilted away 15k, please help!
There's no crying in poker! No, seriously, poker can be so hard on you - with luck going in every direction. Like everyone else said - take a break and try to get a good frame of mind about coming back at a LOWER level to play solid poker and build up your money again.
Good luck. |
Re: Just tilted away 15k, please help!
Yup, take a little break and clear your head. Come back playing a little tighter and make good decisions. You may also want to come back at a lower limit and work your way back...

Re: Just tilted away 15k, please help!
take a break and correct your play

Re: Just tilted away 15k, please help!
You shouldn't play 30/60 again, but I know I would. Years ago I was a veteran of 'taking shots'. God it was fun, and miraculously I did make money. Nowadays I have a job and the poker money doesn't really matter anymore, I don't stress and stick to my limits and roll. But i KNOW for sure if I took a shot and lost I'd be back there with every dollar I had trying to win it back, it's that 'being stuck' feeling I just can't stand.

Re: Just tilted away 15k, please help!
Taking a break is pretty much mandatory at this point. The longer the better, but you need at least a couple days off to get your head straight.
As for what to play when you get back, that depends on a multitude of factors. What's your roll now? Do you think you were ever a winning player at 30/60 to begin with? Is your mental state fragile enough that another losing session at 30/60 would send you back to the tilt cycle? Regardless of the answers, I know you'll be able to be a lot more honest with yourself after some time off. Assuming that you still have a decent amount of money, just take some and go get trashed tonight, or do something fun that won't make you stress about poker. Then when you're in a better mind frame, you can make yourself a new plan. Edit: I see this was a few days ago, so you've probably made a decision. Just remember, if it's not working at 30/60 (and you're still up there), don't be afraid to move down. Having 10K or 15K can suck compared to having 25K or 30K, but if you get down to 0, it will be so, so much worse. |
Re: Just tilted away 15k, please help!
Tilting is not cool.
Stop doing it. |
Re: Just tilted away 15k, please help!
Take a break until you're back in the right frame of mind. (hint: "I'm dying to chase lost money so I can't play patiently at my proper limits" is NOT the right frame of mind.) It'll come back. Just take a break until you settle down a bit and your better poker senses return. q/q |
Re: Just tilted away 15k, please help!
I really think all successful players will go through a session of extreme tilt at least once in their careers. I still tilt from time to time but now I can catch myself and apply the breaks. But anyways, I also had a very similar session to yours in which bad beats added up and next you know im down a significant amount and the only way to make that back is play higher. Stop that now. Never chase money. Isnt it amazing how fast you can blow 15K but how long and hard it is to win it back? Well start to value this money as time and hard work. You don't want to give it back. Next time you feel like playing like a moron go play the lowest stakes and raise and reraise every hand till you lose $100 bucks. Trust me that will take a while and it will cure all the tilt wants. I do this at least once a week. It is so therapeutic to me. The best part is when the fish start calling me a moran and tell me I will never make money at this game, lol. GL.

Re: Just tilted away 15k, please help!
If you're playing 30/60, losing 10k and don't understand proper bankroll managemnt, then you do need help. Serious help.
Take a break and find the proper mindset to play. Never play to win money back. Never play with money you can't afford to lose. I shouldn't have to say this, but if you needed to hear it, there it is. |
Re: Just tilted away 15k, please help!
Seeing as you tilted away your whole roll you might want to attend GA.

Re: Just tilted away 15k, please help!
Just what everyone else is saying, but just take a break, play some pool (don't gamble obviously). If you have a girl or wife, spend time with her. Whenever I go on a downswing, I spend alot of time with my girl, and she takes my mind off it, makes me feel confident. Then I get back to the tables with confidence. Just get your mind off of it.

Never chase money. [/ QUOTE ] this is such sage advice and so hard to follow. it seems that the cycle of losing session(s) -> impatient play -> tilt can only be broken by forthright mental recognition that you're chasing losses, making the situation worse in the process, and need to just stand up and stop. taking a break is key like others said. [ QUOTE ] Next time you feel like playing like a moron go play the lowest stakes and raise and reraise every hand till you lose $100 bucks. [/ QUOTE ] i wish i had read this post last night (before i tilted off an extra 30BB while stuck.) this sounds like a WONDERFUL way to deal with both impatience and tilt and have some fun in the process. i will be putting a post-it by my monitors that says "Tilt? Go be a donk" Thank you |

Re: Just tilted away 15k, please help!
15k would have fed 30k ethiopians I would be mad too
1) If playing in Atlantic City and dropping 15k I would have proceeded to walk out into the ocean forever. 2) If playing in Washinton State and lost 15k I would have accidently slipped off the space needle (SPLAT) 3) If playing in California I would have went to muscle beach and called the lifters pansy's and proceeded to attack them. 4) If playing Online I would have taken a bath with my favorite toaster. 5) If playing in the southern (riverboat) or land based casinos I would curse the south and call Dixie gay. I would also yell the "Dukes of Hazzard" sucked. I would also yell " uh you people know you lost the civil war right " they have some nice dentists up north. 6). If playing in Vegas I would have spent 15k on hookers but if I did lose 15k I would take the terror ride at the top of the stratosphere and forget to put my seatbelt on. All of these ways to feel better after losing 15k would have been done if I had lost 1.5k as You cannot lose 15k at el cortez stakes. |
Re: Just tilted away 15k, please help!
Every great poker player has lost a great amount at one time without actually knowing what they were doing (tilt). Especially online, since depositing, reloading and hitting that stupid call button is made so easy. Don't worry about the loss. Stick to your regular limits and get it back with time and by doing what you do best. I personally have lost 10k in one day after a few ridiculous suck outs I just went crazy. You'll get it back, just don't feel like you have to move up in limits to get your money back quicker, that would be a mistake. Good luck
