Everything?

-Light [censored] on fire when the red sox win (or lose)

-Turn over cars in the STUDENT parking lot when they lose (or win)

-100 lb. girls that drink 7 shots before going to bar and wake up in a different bedroom every morning (although, this certainly didn't hurt my bottom line in college.)

- Allow girls that have no intention of giving up pussy to drink all their alcohol

- Buy textbooks, when you don't need them or can just fill up a backpack in the bookstore and walk out

- get screwed and complain about meal plan without investigating better options.

- about a million more.

School sells book for $100.

Buys it back from you for $8.

School sells book next year for $85.

School buys book back for $6.

School sells book for $75

The fact that most colleges and universities turn a significant profit in both their text book sales and meal plans is obscene.

I think a fair arrangement is stealing books every other semester.

PS- Half.com blah blah blah, I don't care.

Do you know that as a fact?

Even if it is true, it all goes into the same pot. If they weren't making money there, they would have to raise tuition.

I would say at most large universities students get their books from third party bookstores, not university bookstores. IF you go to a large school and are getting your books at the university bookstore, you're getting ripped off even more than you would at the other stores. I can't really speak for smaller schools.

My experience is that if there is one bookstore, it is owned and operated by the school. A big hint here is if the bookstore is in a university building, like the student union.

If there are two or more bookstores that carry most texts for a school, generally one is owned and operated by the school and the other is private. This tends to result in lower prices because of competition.

Wtf, are you saying that there are placed to buy books besides the University book store or that the "university book store" is not actually owned by the university. If it's the former, did you think people didn't know that?

Honestly... not everyone aspires to be this shallow. Telling someone it's a bad idea to get into a relationship is right up there with complaining about how bad rent is in NYC.

At my school theres a student run bookstore that will sell your book for you. You take your old books in, then they let you set the price of the book for anything up to 80% of the retail price. Then they stock the book and after someone buys it you get 75% of the price you listed it for and the store keeps 25%. Good system.

I had scholarships that covered books, but I was sickened when I saw my friends getting raped and pillaged in book sales and returns.

Same thing according to one meal plan, charging students $9 per meal, then making each meal $6. So unless you cancelled to lowest meal plan and used cash, you lost $3 on each meal before ever factoring in price inflation ($3 grilled cheese)

Also not counting forcing freshman into a meal plan that made us pay for breakfast every single day when avg person went 3-4 times per semester during the week.

I obviously don't advocate stealing of textbooks for the simple fact that it does in fact have the direct result of increasing prices for others.

I also agree, do not get a girlfriend. There will be plenty of homesick girls when you arrive, girls that went to single sex high schools, and falling into a relationship will be all too easy.

Dont do it.

[censored] every girl you possibly can between orientation and graduation.

That is all.

Most college/university bookstores are operated by private companies and are located on campus property. Barnes & Noble College Booksellers operates over 1,000 campus bookstores, including Harvard, Vassar, BU, Columbia and Yale. Follett Corp operates over 700, including Stanford, UC Berkeley, Polytechnic, St Johns, Smith, and U-Mass.

Re: Stupid Things College Students Do

It's been a long time since I went to college, but when I did, there was an "official" bookstore on campus. I believe that was operated by a private company, probably paying plenty of rent or a percentage of sales or profits to the University. There were also one or two independant bookstores off campus, which carried most of the required texts, and generally sold new books cheaper and had a lot more used books available because they payed students more for used books. College textbooks are low volume items, which means unit costs for printing are higher. Also, of course, they have a captive market. If you're going to take the course, you have to buy the book, so bookstores, wholesalers and publishers charge more because they can. Look in the Yellow pages (or online equivalent) for an independant bookstore in town. Shop around. Check classifieds in student and local paper for private parites selling books you need. You can probably do better than the campus bookstore.
