signature songs

name a group and their signature song...the one song that is most associated with that group
example:

Led Zeppelin - Stairway to Heaven

easy right?

But what about The Beatles? I Wanna Hold Your Hand or Hey Jude?

Satisfaction or Jumpin' Jack Flash for The Stones?

Not so easy all the time...

What about...

Smashing Pumpkins?
Pearl Jam?
Journey?
The Pixies?

econophile 09-14-2006 01:12 AM

Re: signature songs

stones - satisfaction
beatles - difficult to say, maybe "hard day's night" is a better choice than your suggestions

Mister Peanut 09-14-2006 01:13 AM

Re: signature songs

For The Beatles, picking one is tough. Maybe:

I Wanna Hold Your Hand
She Loves You
Hey Jude
Yesterday

is an okay nomination list.

Floyd - Money or ABITW, II.

Nirvana - Smells Like Teen Spirit

Radiohead - Karma Police... maybe Paranoid Android.

Rage Against the Machine - Bulls on Parade

The Who - My Generation w/ Baba as close second.

Duran Duran-Hungry Like the Wolf
Def Leppard-Pour Some Sugar on Me

Definitely "Today"

Pearl Jam?

Tougher, either "Alive" or "Jeremy"

Mister Peanut 09-14-2006 01:15 AM

Re: signature songs

Pixies really should be Where Is My Mind?

Pearl Jam is Jeremy.

Smashing Pumpkins is "rat in a cage," rofl. Bullet w/ Butterfly Wings. 1979 or Disarm might get some points.

Re: signature songs

I'm guessing you mean associated with by the general public and not that group's particular fan base.

Unforunately its probably Bullet With Butterfly Wings for the Pumpkins. It should be 1979.

The Pixies it's either Where Is My Mind? or Here Comes You're Man

Pearl Jam - Jeremy

Journey - Don't Stop Believin'

Mister Peanut 09-14-2006 01:16 AM

Re: signature songs

Oh, "Today." Damn. Still not 100% that's it though.

NT! 09-14-2006 01:16 AM

Re: signature songs

Pumpkins would probably be "Today" or possibly "Disarm"
Pixies would be "Where is My Mind" due to Fight Club although I prefer "Velouria"
Pearl Jam - "Jeremy"

I don't think people should hypothesize on artists when they weren't alive to see them explode, although "Satisfaction" seems like an obvious choice for the Stones.

It's definitely one of their most popular but I can't think of it as their signature song because it doesn't really sound like any of their other stuff. I'd probably go with Hey Jude.

"Yesterday" is I believe the most-covered song that is not yet public domain. So hard to pick against it. It's hard with the Beatles because there are so damn many.

That is a tough one, I want to say it's Proud Mary which is a bummer since that's a cover

Down on the Corner and Fortunate Son are up there too.

Yeah I take Fortunate Son

is this your opinion of their best song? i think the point of the thread is to list the song that the general public most associates with the band.

No, I hear Simple Kind of Man a lot more on WEBN than either of the other songs but that's probably an anomoly.

Eminem - RSS, Lose Yourself, My Name Is..., or Stan. Stan is basically Eminem's Yesterday in that it might be most well-known or talked-about, but it's not representative of the rest of his stuff.

F Mac has gotta be "Go Your Own Way," doesn't it?

Also picking one for Prince is really hard, I think it would be "When Doves Cry" though. I wish it was "I Would Die 4 U" or "Purple Rain"

SBS? What song is that? Also, Still Haven't Found should get a nod.

For the Pixies, I'll go with Debaser. Where is My Mind close 2nd.

Weeser is one with at least a few candidates.
