Is Tipping De Rigeur In France and the Rest of Europe?
Is tipping expected in French poker rooms? If so, what are the typical guidelines?
What are the tipping customs in the other card rooms throughout Europe? |
Re: Is Tipping De Rigeur In France and the Rest of Europe?

I have a feeling this thread will turn for the worse very very quickly.

TomBrooks has DeGaulle to start a tipping thread? [/ QUOTE ] This is a legitimate question by Tom Brooks and I will allow it unless it gets out of control or becomes a debate. I like to think B&M is one of the more civilized forums at 2+2, lets keep it clean kids! TT [img]/images/graemlins/club.gif[/img] |

Unlike a restaurant or cab, you have the opportunity to see how the locals handle the situation before you act yourself. |
Re: Is Tipping De Rigeur In France and the Rest of Europe?
I never tip in Europe.

I never tip in Europe. [/ QUOTE ] I've never been to Europe but I have heard from European tourists that tipping isn't the norm or even allowed in some casinos, but the rake is absolutely ridiculous. Upwards of 1.5 - 2x U.S. rakes, give or take a few bucks. |
Re: Is Tipping De Rigeur In France and the Rest of Europe?
Illegal to tip casino staff in britain. Imagine it's similar everywhere else. Tipping is mostly an american thing.

I ain't played there but tipping in Europe was the topic of conversation at a B&M table the other day with a nice collection of Euro's at the table. You don't tip in England. You DO tip in France and many other parts of Europe. In fact if you fail to tip don't be surprised if the dealer or floor "remind" you that the games couldn't function without tips. Definitely a case of "when in Rome..." Just take your cue from what you see happening. |
Re: Is Tipping De Rigeur In France and the Rest of Europe?
I've played at Aviation a few times this year, and tipping was common, though not on every hand. I tended to give either a 2 or 5 euro chip after a bigger pot, and nothing for smaller ones.
It seemed about average, possibly a little low, but nobody said anything or looked at me funny when I didn't bother tipping on smaller pots. I don't know if tipping habits vary by game there, but I was consistently sitting in their largest available PL dealer's choice game. I never tipped a dime when I played at the Vic. Never saw anybody else do it, either. |
Re: Is Tipping De Rigeur In France and the Rest of Europe?
At the Gutshot poker club in London it's expected that you tip the dealer after winning a pot. Not like you get kicked out if you don't, but it's normal practice to do so.

Re: Is Tipping De Rigeur In France and the Rest of Europe?
Tipping is encouraged in Vienna.

Re: Is Tipping De Rigeur In France and the Rest of Europe?
Just to clarify the position on the UK situation, as there are two, correct but apparently conflicting, bits of info above.
Licensed casinos which offer poker in the UK are subject to the UK gaming laws which forbid dealers from accepting tips. Therefore if you play poker, or any table game, in a UK casino then you don't tip. If you win or cash in an MTT in a casino you may well be asked to leave a small contribution for the waitresses. However, this would not be on the same scale as a similar tip left for the dealers in the US. For example, I had a £7,400 cash in an MTT and it was suggested by the cashiers that I leave £20-40. However, there are now an increasing number of unlicenced poker clubs operating in the UK, of which Gutshot is the best known. These are 'officially' private members clubs and are not subject to the same regulations (although their legality is being tested through the courts at present). At these places it is likely that tipping is allowed and, most probably, expected. As for the rest of Europe I'm not aware of anywhere that has the same regulations as the UK. I've played in Vienna and found it to be similar to the US in terms of tipping at the tables (although generally there isn't as much of a 'tipping culture' over here as there is in the US). I would imagine most of Continental Europe to be the same. Sheriff |
Re: Is Tipping De Rigeur In France and the Rest of Europe?
Okay, well in the Gutshot it's definitely standard. Optional, but the done thing to do.

Re: Is Tipping De Rigeur In France and the Rest of Europe?
Tipping is standard in Dublin.
