I'm not married, but this sounds an awful lot like "Todd, instead of going out tonight, let's watch all the old episodes of The Office together."

If the US version of The Office is as funny as the UK one, or she actually means the UK version, I'd prefer watching The Office over playing poker.

I was just about to type the same thing. The US version isn't quite as good as the BBC version, but in my opinion it's arguably the best show on TV right now. And Steve Carrell is quite possibly the funniest man on TV right now as well.

Getting back to the OPs question though, I'm guessing your wife wanted you to watch The Office with her. As I said before, it's a good show so missing some poker isn't a hard sacrifice in that situation. If she had hinted that she wanted you to watch Trading Spaces with her, on the other hand, it may be more pleasurable to fill your bathtub with piranhas and let them gnaw on your testicles until you pass out. Just a thought in case that situation should ever arise...

I'd take the counter play.

"Are you sure you want to stay home?

I was really looking forward to a night out with you."

You can take the response and figure out what's really going on, which may be nothing or a summons or something in between.

Brilliant play, off duty. She clearly is giving you the opportunity to "re-choose" to spend time with her when your other option is almighty poker. Definite trap, and the only way to avoid pitfalls for as long as possible is to turn it around and make her show her hand first. My wife makes me choose to spend time with her versus play poker all the time, and it's usually wrapped up in this kind of innocent-looking bow. Some day I'll learn.

Took forever to find because it's still not archived even though it was made nearly 3 years ago. I'm guessing you've heard of MajorKong, though he changed his username.

Why you guys aren't crushing these Microlimit games from 01/02/2004

Here are some other posts that are certainly in the best of Majorkong:
"So I 3-bet to find out where I stood..." from 02/11/04

Preflop Play: Take off the training wheels from 01/25/04

Everyone who wants to "charge the flush draws" PLEASE READ from 12/30/03.

It could be a test. Don't respond via email. Call her on phone and use verbal cues/intonation to determine if she's being sincere or giving you a test.

That reply essentially forces her to honor the previous agreement ("gee, if he really was expecting it that much...."). After she responds "Of course we'll go out if you wanted it so bad" it becomes really hard to backtrack from that.

There's about 5:2 chance that you both end up spending the night doing something else than you would really liked (you=poker, her=Office). Me not likey. You gotta change that a bit at least.

Re: Planning on having night out w/ the wife til she sent me this emai

I'm not suggesting that they copy my words exactly. That would be very dumb. I am suggesting (put in this situation) I'd gladly open that door to rehonor the deal because what I'm trying to do is get an answer to the metagame question "What is my wife really trying to ask me".

In this context I could give a F- about dinner, the office on DVD, heading to the casino, a strip club, whatever. In the long run, tonight doesn't matter. You'll get another chance to play cards, she'll get another chance to watch reruns, and you'll both likely get another chance to do something together. But beware: if you don't pay attention to these seemingly insignificant occurances with your wife and figure out what they really mean, you are begging for the the big D.

I am trying really hard to not sound like a bad cross between Dr. Phil and Chip Reese but when it comes down to it everything we do is one big long game. You get a lot of spots to make an EV plus play every day that slip through your fingers because you're not paying attention. This happens in everything you do.

My wife doesnt do this. If shes says to me I'm going to do x, you can do y. I say "ok babe" and go do y. She knows this and simply states what she wants. It's a pleasure.

She's tried the "game" a few times in the beginning but quickly learned that I'm not willing/too stupid to play.

Is it that hard to have the laptop with you on the couch if you want to get some poker in?

This isn't the highest of quality time together but it's better time spent together than seperate rooms.

This is a much easier situation for me though because when at my GF's place and she just wants to stay in and watch TV then she is typically watching something in spanish whereas I don't really speak the language. So it's zero problem for me to do something else.

So funny you just wrote this. I'm ordering my laptop tonight. When I play poker and she watches TV not only are we in different rooms, we are on different floors of the house.
