I-10 or I-40

It looks like I'll be driving my wifes furniture from Rome, GA to Phoenix. I'll be swinging through New Orleans and the Memphis/Tunica area (yeah, I know not a very straight line). Time is barely an issue, and I'm hoping to play some poker along the way. Am I likely to find more casino's westbound on I-10 from N.O. or west bound on I-40 from Memphis? I play mostly small stake FLHE.

Thanks in advance.

easily westbound on I-10. Baton Rouge has two casinos downtown (Belle of Baton Rouge & Casino Rouge) although neither of them have a poker room anymore.

Grand Casino Coushatta in Kinder, LA is about 25 miles north of I-10 and about 30 east of Lake Charles and has a decent sized poker room.

Lake charles has several casinos (at least two) that offer poker.

I haven't driven on I-40 west of memphis, but from what i know about Arkansas, i would be willing to bet a significant amount of money that you're not going to find more casinos there than in Louisiana.

Don't forget Oklahoma and New Mexico.

If you really want to make a poker tour of the South-central US, I would finagle something like 10 -> 49 -> 20 -> 35 -> 40. That adds much distance, but now you hit Oklahoma and Sandia (a very nice room in Albuquerque). You would miss Lake Charles and Tucson.

Texas is ironically a legal poker wasteland, so going around it and through a poker state is +EV.

If you wanna go thousands of miles out of your way, I-70 or I-80 are quite good.

There are only a few casinos along 40, I think they were in New Mexico, maybe one or two looked like they had poker, and who knows if it was any good or not.

And if you take I-10, you'll be in Texas for 879 miles.

On the other hand, when you get to West Texas you may see this sign:

I tried to pm you, but your box is full.

As for poker, the closest room to Rome, GA may be in Philadelphia, MS.
Silver Star Casino. Around a dozen tables, I'd guess half full on Tues. nite. Been awhile since i've been there. Soft games I'd expect.
And a couple of very good golf courses.

Take I-10.

Stop at The Beau Rivage in Biloxi - just opened this week, so the action must be good.

Then head on to New Orleans - we would love to have you and would really appreciate you spending a little money around town.

Then you have three options:
1) You can either head north on I-49 to Shreveport (which would allow you to go to Winstar in OK)
2) You can stay on I-10 and stop in Lake Charles. The problem is once you get past Lake Charles your next poker room is at Inn of the Mountain Gods in Riodosa, NM.
3) Head north on I-55 to Tunica, then head back south the I-20 to Shreveport and Winstar.

This sounds like a fun trip. Good luck, and we will be looking forward to a trip report.

Well, I'll be driving a U-haul so I'm not sure 80 MPH will even be possible, or prudent, lol. At this point (at any point actually) TX sounds like a good place to avoid. Good rooms in OK and NM sound like good diversions

Thanks again everybody for your help. Look for a trip report in a couple of weeks.

Re: I-10 or I-40

Try this:

Take I-10 into Mississippi and play there. Then onto N.O. to play at Harrah's. Next, take I-10 out of N.O. and take I-310 south to Hwy 90. Go west on 90 for about 1 hour to LA Hwy 83 (The Baldwin Exit) and go 5 miles to Cypress Bayou Casino.

Get back on Hwy 90 and head into Lafayette, call me and I'll take you to some local bar games. Next, take I-49 north out of Lafayette to Exit 53, the Bunkie exit. Follow the signs for 25 minutes to Paragon Casino.

After Paragon, continue north on I-49 to Shreveport and spend some time playing there. Take I-20 to Dallas, then north on I-35 into Oklahoma...etc.

Have fun!

The current (yet tentative) itinerary, looks something like this: Rome, GA to N.O., have a look see and play some poker, then north to Tupelo for some golf, over to Tunica and Memphis, then west on I-40 with some stops in OK and NM for some poker. South on I-17 and maybe one last stop at Cliff Castle and on to Phoenix.

How far from N.O. to Lafayette? Is Harrah's the best place to play in N.O.?

Re: I-10 or I-40

The poker action has been covered, but here are a couple of additional points to consider, especially if you're leaving right away.

The southern route, I-10, will take you through hundreds of miles of brutal heat. When traveling between Texas and Los Angeles I always take I-10 in the winter and I-40 in the summer.

U-Haul's quoted rate is based on a fairly direct route from point to point. If you go hundreds of miles out of the way to play poker, be prepared to pay a LOT of additional money when you arrive.

Re: I-10 or I-40

I'd go to Tunica first. It's way more donkish than N.O. or Biloxi, although the Beau Rivage's new poker room is fantastic.

There is another poker room near New Orleans, Boomtown Casino, which is in Harvey, La., about a 15-20 minute drive from Harrah's.
