The Well: MrWookie

Who threw the <strike>whiskey</strike> Wookie in the well? (In the well?)

Wait, that's not the quote I want.

[ QUOTE ]
A stranger is being shown around a village that he has just become part of. He is shown a well and his guide says "On any day except Wednesday, you can shout any question down that well and you'll be told the answer" .

The man seems pretty impressed, and so he shouts down: Why not on Wednesday? and the voice from in the well shouts back: Because on Wednesday, it’s your day in the well .

Well this is my Wednesday in The Well which will consist of Wednesday and Thursday of this week.

You may ask me any question about whatever you like. I will answer to the best of my abilities if I choose to answer your question.

[/ QUOTE ]

For those of you not in the know, we're going to try out stealing this idea from SSNL. Basically, ask me anything, and I'll give you an answer. It doesn't even have to be about poker. We'll look into getting some veterans and high stakes Micro alums in here who hopefully have a good story to tell. Slightly contrary to the SSNL tradition, Thursdays work better for me, so I'll be taking my turn today and into tomorrow.

Fire away.

What about the micro board keeps you interested? You put a lot of time into this board despite no longer being a micro player. Besides being the mod, which I assume you could abdicate if you wanted to, why do you stick around?

Mostly because I like the people here. Some of it's a comfort zone thing, but most of it is just that I'm so familiar with everyone here that I like posting amongst friends. Additionally, I really like teaching things to people. I always have. Even my very first job was as a ski instructor. I like teaching poker, skiing, physics, dancing, or juat about anything else. I do post in SSSH and SSNL when I'm learning something new (and my upcoming 10/20 hands in MHSH), but enjoy teaching people in this forum.

(2) What were the results in this hand
(3) Why does a poker publishing company have an Automobiles forum?

Thanks for your time and effort for this forum.

How did you start NL and don´t you think that the factor of luck is more important in NL. I am playing regularly in the 2.5 mil free roll event and I regularly loose with hands like AK against somebody with A4 finding the second 4 on the river. Nevertheless I like to start playing NL as well. What would you recommend for a starter? Read books or forums?

How do you calculate the mother f@#$@# Henry's law constant of N2O into my amine solution at 1 atm?! Here's my data:

http://img263.imageshack.us/img263/9...withn2osk2.jpg

I am basically taking a sealed CSTR and injecting multiple times N2O into it and measuring the pressure as the gas goes into solution. I eventually make my way up to 1atm and by that time, the solution is nearly saturated. So then I can calculate how many moles of N2O went into my solution by using the ideal gas law. Ok, so now I know that my solution absorbed 0.25moles of N2O before reaching saturation... is the Henry's law constant now He = #moles adsorbed / vol sample / 1 atm?! That gives me 6.25E-4 mol/cm3/atm... THIS NUMBER SHOULD BE NEAR 10k!! GAH I"M TOTALLY SPAZZZZING!!!

Oh I almost forgot to mention that my sensor needs to be offset somewhat to actually get 1 atm = 14.7psia... it's an easy correction, but I just don't care cause all I care about is the delta P.

2. What is the biggest misconception about this game that you constantly see aroung here, even for some of the better mocro players/posters?

OK I lied... 2 more

3. What should I drink in Vegas (still waiting )
4. Give us your top 7-10 posters in this forum and why.

Re: The Well: MrWookie

hows your venture into NL going?
what major adjustments did you have to make?

I'm actually going to put NL on hold for a bit. I want to come back to limit. Partially, that's because I just dropped 10 buy ins and I'm not liking NL all that much right now, but part of it is that I've reached my 20k hands goal and I wanted to come back to limit at that point anyway. I took on NL in no small part as a new challenge for myself, and now I want to challenge myself to play 10/20 6 max. I'll probably go back to NL soon, though, because I'm still not all that good at it, and I want to get better.

My overall results from this stretch are at about 6 PTBB/100 (PTBB = 2x big blind), which is somewhat modest by the standards of most veterans, but it's pretty incredible for a new player, especially considering that it includes a 17 buy in downswing disaster and the 10 buy in cooler. I'd say about 10 or 12 of those buy ins (total) were from just atrocious play on my part. Some were from losing coinflips with strong draws, and some were just standard beats when holding the best hand. NL can be hugely profitable, and with variance relatively lower for a comparable dollar earn in limit. However, if you play it too much like limit, you will eat it hard.

I'd say the biggest adjustment is making big laydowns. Everyone scolds you in limit for making them, but they're essential in NL. If you've made it past the flop, you need to start looking at top pair like you do 3rd pair, 2 pair like 2nd pair, and a set like you do top pair. Also, flush draws play more like gutshot draws in limit: sometimes you have odds, sometimes you have implied odds, but by no means are you always seeing the river. I was thinking about writing up something more extensive about this later as I get more experience.

1. biggest downswing in bb over any stretch of limits?

About 400-450 BB at Absolute 2/4 6 max. I lost a couple thousand hands of history in a hard drive crash, so I'm not sure exactly. I came pretty close to losing my faith in poker.

2. do you tilt like me? have you ever damaged any personal property?

I tilt, yes, but I frequently quit and have a drink before I really start losing. I've never broken anything. I stop at pounding my fist on my desk and yelling at my monitor.

3. what is the drunkest you have ever been and what happened?

I think that would be right near the end of my senior year in college. I was partying with some friends playing some drinking games and having a good time. After I was already pretty drunk, I mixed myself a margarita in my liter stein that contained the better part of a fifth of tequila, thinking that it'd just last me the rest of night. Instead, my friends decided to go to another party literally right after I finished making it. Rather than taking it with me, I just downed it. I remember walking around the party not seeing well enough to identify any faces. This was at the exact opposite corner of campus from where my dorm was. Somehow, though, I made it back. I flopped down on my couch, and the girls in my suite just came out and gawked at me, not really sure what to do. Somehow, another female friend of mine caught word (I may have sent her a drunken IM, I'm not sure) and came over. She held the garbage can I puked into for the next couple hours AND emptied it out so our suite wouldn't smell in the morning while my suitemates looked on in horror. THAT's a good friend. I was still somewhat drunk the next morning.

4. do people ever say you look like adam corolla?

No, and I'm not sure who he is, but I get Nicholas Cage a lot.

5. if you were forced to trade lives with any other 2+2er who you've never met, and you'd never be able to change back, whose life would you choose?

El Diablo's life is tempting, but I'm not sure I'm meant for the balla lifestyle. I'll have to think about this some more and get back to you.

6. do you think question #5 will be the best question asked in this thread?

No, it's kinda vague.

1. I think limit is a more robust game, really. It's more condusive to the longterm survival of bad players, and it's not broken by short stacking. Also, I'd say it's a little easier to learn with more available literature. OTOH, a brand new player can short stack his way to success without too much learning at all. Giving NL a shot is great for your poker playing, since it forces you to learn new things. You might find you like it, or it might better suit your style.

2. I'm away from my home comp with PT right now, but I know I took it down without a showdown, and I know at least one of them folded the flop. I think it was both, but I might have had to fire of a turn bet at one of them.

3. They pay 2+2 good money for the privilege, and 2+2 would be foolish to say no.

Airplane?

I think the old woman was clearly fluent in jive, so she gave the more believalbe performance.

NL Skill?

I think NL is a somewhat lower variance form of poker compared to limit, one that rewards skill more. You get to punish that guy who tries to draw out on you that much more. However, tournament poker is different. When short stacked, it's much more likely his play was, in fact, correct. Short stacked late tournament NL is indeed higher variance and higher luck, but deep stacked cash games are very skill-oriented. As for getting started, I'd read HOH 1 and GSIH and then start playing some hands as you read the digested posts in SSNL. Then read the Little Green Book, play some more, and read more SSNL. Then read NLTP, and keep playing. NLTP is too difficult and abstract be a good resource for beginners.

Treated my drinking problem?

Yep!

How do you calculate the mother f@#$@# Henry's law constant of N2O into my amine solution at 1 atm?!

Henry's law? Hell, I haven't worked with that since my freshman year in college, or possibly my sophomore year in high school. If ever. Either I didn't know it, or I never learned it. I can't help you, sorry, but I may look it up if I get bored.

1. Besides BR, what is the biggest hurdle to overcome moving from say .5/1 to 5/10?

Hmmm. I'd say it's getting value from marginal hands. At lower limits with bad players in big, multiway pots, you can nutpeddle and get paid off. As you move up, you get (somewhat) fewer people per pot, and they will start paying you off (a little) less. Consequently, you not only need to get more value from hands like 2nd pair, but as the number of players decreases, those marginal hands start increasing in value.

2. What is the biggest misconception about this game that you constantly see aroung here, even for some of the better mocro players/posters?

Hmmm, there are a few things I could nominate:

"You're WA/WB"
"6 max is a whole different kind of poker"
That 3betting a flush draw out of position with a slim equity edge is better than taking increased implied odds when you hit
Bluffing never works in the micros
"Party is rigged"

I'm not sure which I'd pick for my final answer.

3. What should I drink in Vegas (still waiting )

I still don't remember you telling me what kinds of things you liked. You like beer? Whiskey? Gin? Rum?

4. Give us your top 7-10 posters in this forum and why.

My understanding of quantum entanglement is that clairvoiance would only be able to get around the indeterminancy problem if it we not assumed that it existed, but that it worked below the sub-atomic level. This would surely be Star Blazers thinking. So basically the cat is both until you clairvoy it or look at it.

*splash* (the sound of me falling into Wookie's well)

Read <u>Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency</u>, by Douglas Adams (author of the Hitchhiker's Guide series, among other things), for a good, albeit tangential, discussion of this topic. What it boils down to is that this is a moot question; observation is observation, whether you open the box or peer into it with your spooky mind-powers, and as soon as the cat is observed the quantum field resolves.

Re: The Well: MrWookie

Assuming for the moment the veracity of clairvoiance, how would the observance of one such endowed effect Schroedinger's cat?

The cat would cease to be in a state consisting of a superposition of the dead state and the alive state, but instead the superposition would collapse, revealing the cat to be either dead or alive. You can observe the same phenomenon in a more practical experiment. If you shoot sodium atoms through a double slit in a dark vacuum, they will behave like waves. You can observe an interferene pattern of fringes, just like you would with light, rather than seeing two linds on the detector where the atom went through one slit or the other. However, if you open up a window to look at the experiment, the wave behavior vanishes, and the sodium atoms behave like proper particles. Nothing else about the experiment has changed.

1) What is the toughest poker lesson that you have learned?

Hmmm, that's a close one between realizing that 6 max is poker, too, and folding good hands in large pots to big bets in NL.

2) What is the toughest poker lesson that you have failed to learn?

I'm still bad at playing top pair, and top pair-type hands in NL.

3) What is real life like for you? Family? Job? Hobbies? Other random things?

I'm a grad student, single. My immediate family lives in the Seattle area, but I have extended family that I frequently see in southern MN, in the bay area, in DC, and Atlanta. My hobbies are dominantly poker and swing dancing.

4) What are the religious/spiritual views or philosophies?

I consider myself a devout Christian, raised Lutheran, but I'm no fundie. In my humble opinion, a lot of the ideas of the so-called "fundamentalists" are fundamentally wrong. A lot of what people hate most about the kind of Christianity most often discussed in the media is filled with too much hate and exclusion to be in line with the basic Christian ideas of love, forgiveness, and acceptance. They may have their relationship with Christ in order, and that is #1, but I think they're expressing it rather poorly. In many ways, the religious leaders today resemble the religious leaders of Jesus' day, on whom he railed endlessly.

5) Who else would you like to see in the well?

You, bozlax, Entity, DeathDonkey, maybe CDC, and maybe Joe Tall. Oooh, getting Grunch would be a good one, too, although I think he's done one in SSNL.

Nope, I'm single, and I'm not really a college student. See above for more details.

Do you think THIS will be the best question asked in this thread? I do (this was about the Schroedinger's cat question).

Nope.

Limit or NL?

Too hard to say at this point. Let me get in some more hands at limit, and then some more at NL. I'll probably end up playing both, however.

Bumps or steeps?

I have no idea what this means.

Classical or quantum?

I like teaching classical more, but quantum is the way of the world.

Tap or ballet?

Tap, I suppose, but I don't really get into either.

Paper or plastic?

Plastic. I reuse plastic grocery bags for garbage bags and lunch bags, and they're still recycleable.

Re: The Well: MrWookie

Do you play FullTime now? If no, do you plan to in the future?

Nope, and I never want to be a full time pro. Poker is a fun hobby with a nice side income, and that's it for me.

How did you start out in Poker?

At some very low stakes tournament at home games with my brother's friends, and then online at Full Tilt's play money tables with a copy of WLLH and HPFAP.

What do you think are the most frequest mistakes at ML?

Missing value bets and it's not even close, at least given the set of people who have a starting hand chart and an odds chart.

How do you feel about cbetting?

I probably do it a little too much, but it's usually very good.

How will I feel? Eh, breaking even at that level is a pretty decent accomplishment, but I don't think it's a big enough step up from 5/10 that I will be. If it happens, I'll probably just go back to NL where I know I still have plenty of room to improve.

Not entirely, and not even by Micro's standards. You have to go to OOT, NVG, or TV Poker to see the truly awful guys.

what is the meaning of life?

I don't think life has a meaning, per se, but it does have a purpose.

How do you like being a mod? Any benifits that come with it, that us non-mods would not know about?

Mason invited any mod who was in Vegas around WSOP time out to dinner on him on a couple different dates. The second also included Dan Harrington and Bill Robertie. I couldn't make either, unfortunately.

Do you think you spend too much time on 2+2?

Definitely. I waste too much time when at work.

What do you think about variance, and how much has your thoughts on it changed over the last 2 years?

I'm naturally risk averse, so I don't think I'll ever love it. Instead, I've just come to accept it.

Do you think it is possible for a winning player to be on the wrong side of variance for 100K hands, and be a loser even though they may be a winning player in actuality?

Yes, but they are likely not playing winning poker for a good chunk of that. It also depends on how big the loss is at then end of 100k, and how much they were winning to begin with.

# What is your best explanation of electromagnetic radiation (I'd like a physics perspective).

What are you looking for? What it is? Why it is? What?

# Will all your answers to these questions be truthful?

Yes, but I might not always tell the whole truth.

# How much longer do you see yourself as moderator of the micros?

Probably as long as I'm on 2+2 regularly.

# Where has Gregatron been lately?

He's busy with a new position after getting his Ph. D. Also, he's converted to NL.

What did you eat for lunch today?

Heh, funny I got this question. I had my signature tuna and bacon sub today, along with a Coke and french onion Sun Chips.

Since I'm away from my PT database right now, I'll have to look it up when I get home. We're defining microlimit as 1/2 or below, no?

What did the 47 used to represent?

I had the 47 on there because when I signed on, I thought it would be a good idea for my forum name to match my Party name. Oops. The reason my Party name had a 47 is because I had a play money account named MrWookie there before I signed up under an affiliate and started playing for real money. Consequently, I needed a new name. My creativity was low, and the number 47 was something of a dumb running joke amidst my friends back in college. Rather that come up with something good, I just tacked 47 onto the end.

Tilt,

I can't say I've gotten Ray Ramano before, but I think he's closer than this Adam Corolla fellow.
