Casino Arizona - Labor Day Tournaments

What's up the rebuys and add-ons for the three tournaments over Labor Day Weekend?

Did Dave make this decision? If so, why!?!?!

Obviously, I think it blows and the majority of people I've talked to at CA don't like the rebuys/add-ons. I just can't figure out why they would change the format so drastically for one of their "big" tournaments.

Of course, I'm still playing in all three, but I'm pissed I'm going to have to deplete my bankroll to pay for extra chips just so I can be on equal ground with the rest of the field.

If you want a billion extra starting chips, go to Fort McDowell. Keep the tournaments at CA as they should be - no lame rebuys/add-ons!

PS – Anyone won the bad beat yet? As of midnight last night it was still at $67,500.

Re: Casino Arizona - Labor Day Tournaments

I just can't figure out why. Rebuys/Add-ons just make the tournament last longer. Dave sure as hell wants to get out of there quickly, and they don't want tables taken up on a holiday weekend when they could be raking live games.

Plus, with all those extra chips, will the Monday tournament even end in time for the 8pm "battle of champions"?

Lame Lame Lame.

So what is the buy-in/ structure like?

Also the nightly wed and thursday tournaments, do the stacks all start equal or do they give bonus chips for live play? (start with 2500??)

Re: Casino Arizona - Labor Day Tournaments

They do not give bonus chips for the Evening tournys, only the am tournys.

Re: Casino Arizona - Labor Day Tournaments

It makes for a bigger prize pool and they likely are giving it a test run to see how it sells.

Edit to say: I just called CA. The jackpot is now $77,500. Last night I moved from 20-40 to 8-16 because of it. There is another $25,000 after 3 am and I may go down to play. On Tuesday and Wednesday I think there are also drawings for add-ons to the JP which may bring it to $125,000+ if it doesn't get hit by then.

To folks unfamiliar with CA's JP: It's fairly easy to hit. Aces full of 10's or better beaten by 4 of a kind or better. Kicker must play. Sometimes it gets hit 3 times a day. The current size is extremely unusual.

Re: Casino Arizona - Labor Day Tournaments

Problem is that it'll sell well just because it's a holiday weekend. So they'll assume they should do rebuys/add-ons all the time. Oh well.

As of 11 last night, badbeat jackpot still going.

I don't play the tourneys very often but I've noticed that they don't sell out at 5:30 p.m. like they used to. Sometimes I hear them announcing seats open at 6:50. Likely they want to try changing things around. I understand your position. Play can be wild during the re-buy period and it takes a sophisticated tourney player (I'm not one of them) to know if the add-on is worth it in a particular situation.
If they don't lower the initial buy-in it'll also dramatically increase the cost.

NICE! I'll have to head over tonight after I get done with work.

Here's a question for the CA regulars:

Do you think proportionally, the jackpot is hit at 5-150 tables or the limit tables more often? I’ve heard arguments for both, and they both make sense. Just wondering what others thought.

I can't imagine any argument for the 5-150 tables. It's got to be the 3-6 tables, because nine to a flop simply provides more opportunities for jackpot hands than three to a flop. Plus you can't bet a low limit player out of a hand. I'm the only moron in low limit history to fold pocket jacks when a third ace hit the river and Mr. Ace King bet one more time.

Re: Casino Arizona - Labor Day Tournaments

I was there and watched it get hit at the 4-8 table, then 10 mins later it was hit on the omaha table and then 20 mins later it was hit again on the same omaha table. Like DesertCat said the lower limit tables are the way to go when you want to hit the BBJ

When did it get hit last night? Before they added the 35,000 or was it still at 100,000?

No, heck this was 4 months ago at least, I havn't been there in at least two months. Been real busy on opening up a resturant and other personal things. Should get out there for the BBJ right now though, thats a chunk of money. Plus havn't seen Howard in forever

I figured you were busy. Anyway, BBJ now (I left an hour ago) $120,000. At 3 a.m. a $25,000 add-on goes into effect until 9 a.m. I think. I was surprised by how many tables were empty. A friend asked to trade 10% for the BBJ but he plays the 5-150 and I was in the 8-16 (I'd been playing the 20-40 but had to drop back down for a shot at that kind of money). I think it was a bad deal for me, but he's a friend.

I just called and it's $152,500. Unreal. For a jackpot as easy to hit as this one is, that sometimes gets hit 3 times a day and hardly ever gets to $20,000, this is incredible. Yet I was there last night and there were still plenty of empty tables. And, worse, I promised to take my mother to Morton's tonight so I can't go play. Demmit!!!!!

Very brief Morton's TR:

I have a piggy bank that I cash in at Ft. McDowell when it's full and use that for Morton's. This time it came to $180.00, which, it turns out, was $70.00 short!!!!! Yikes!
Next time we go to Fatburger.

Do you ever wish those players who play two hands an hour and spend the rest of the time somewhere else would go get screwed? I do. Here is an interesting story along those lines.

The jackpot was hit around 12:30 pm today. I was playing an hour later and was told that the winner took his money in cash home in a garbage bag ( apparently cash winnings in garbage bags are immune to IRS audits).

Not sure how true that tale was but my dealer told a better one, that the table was eight handed, but one of the players was away from his seat for 20 minutes (playing slots) when it hit, so the table share was only five ways, close to $8k each. When said player returned and found out he wasn't included, apparently said player was quite upset.

FYI, they announced at 3:30 pm that only 40 seats remain for tomorrows tourney. I signed up so there is max only 39 seats remaining.

Good story. Many players don't know you can only be gone for 10 minutes to qualify for the JP (20 minutes minimum to get 'picked up').

My favorite JP story is from last summer's $500,000 BBJ promotion. It was hit on a 3-6 table. The woman who won the small end ($125,000) was still playing at the table 3 hours later. I guess there wasn't a 4-8 seat available in all that time in case she wanted to play a little higher.

GL to you in the tourney. I don't play them because I couldn't win even if I had x-ray vision.

I'm playin in the tournament on Sunday too. I also, am not much of a tournament player, but for the same amount I buy in for at the 8/16 game I can re-buy once and add-on once and have a chance to win quite a bit if I were to get lucky.

Also, I'm off on Sunday and I spend 25 hours playing in the last 3 days for the jackpot so it will be nice to change it up a little.

Well, 5 rebuys later, I'm done, couldn't win a pot to save my life...
First table was super tight, no action, next table I got moved to, this guy was doing his best Daniel N impression, all in blind 8 out of ten hands...
The really silly thing is how play didnt really slow down after the re-buy period, because everyone had huge stacks....
I think they said the prize pool was 58k...
Tommorrow is a little different 225 buy in, $100 re-buys (I thought it was a typo so I decided to play today-DOH!!)

Lots of chopping towards the end-

4th took 7,000 and 3rd took 8,000.

Last two players split what was left for $11,500 each.

DesertCat 09-03-2006 01:05 AM

Re: Casino Arizona - Labor Day Tournaments

I was out 48th (3 rebuys). I was big stack at my table with about 60 people left but lost two races in five minutes and was crippled. I really hate the top heavy payouts they have, if I had made the money (20th), I would only broke even, essentially I needed 9th or better to make any decent profit.

Ocho 09-03-2006 12:19 PM

Re: Casino Arizona - Labor Day Tournaments

Most people at the final tables needed 9th to make money. The one exception that i know of was Adell (spelling?), who was a badass and spent only the original 100 for the buyin (not even the add-on).

Hass 09-04-2006 07:06 PM

Re: Casino Arizona - Labor Day Tournaments

One re-buy, and one add-on and I was knocked out in about 65th place on Sunday. Never really had any good hands and never won a big pot.

Ran into aces twice in the last 5 hands I played.

Ocho 09-07-2006 01:28 AM

Why I\'ll never play a rebuy tournament again at Casino Arizona:

The $330 buy-in was supposed to only have one rebuy allowed. It was changed the morning of the tournament to allow for unlimited rebuys. I think they decided to change the rule because they did not sell out the tournament and were worried about covering the guaranteed payouts.

A number of people noticed that one player seemed to be dumping an exorbitant amount of chips on one of his buddies. He'd push all in with J4, J7, etc. After 10+ rebuys, what does Dave, the tournament director do? Does he say something to the pair about collusion? NO. He rewards the chip dumper with a Casino Arizona Jacket for having the most rebuys. I'm not suggesting that the tournament director had anything to do with the pair of colluders - I just think it's ridiculous that he didn't notice and put a stop to what was going on.
