How Do I Tell my friend I DO NOT Want to stake him

can anyone give me any advice regarding how to tell a friend who's asked to be staked that I don't want to but in kind terms...

basically my friend had a bankroll and went on a really bad downswing and lost it all. I witnessed some of these sick beats and while he didn't play bad, he didn't react to well afterwards and seems to have lost his grinder ethic recently (probably as a result of wanting to constantly get this $$ back)...

he feels he is the best player and can play better than anyone so he plays every hand very aggressively.

so basically I do not want to stake him as I do not agree with his playing style and feel my money will goto waste...

any suggestions/thoughts ???

(as far as limits go, this would either be for $500NL or 15/30 full ring...not 1/2NL or baby limits so we're talking about a decent chunk of coin, maybe ~5K or more)

I've also transferred him a small amount on pokerstars ($500) which he quickly lost playing 1/2 limit and small buy in MTT's, I watched some of his play and I was not very happy with it.

Tell him you already gave him money for a stake at 1/2. He blew it. How can you think he'll do well with 5k?

Why is it so hard to tell people what they anything that might cause conflict? Just tell him straight up that you don't want to stake him because he plays too aggressive. If he doesn't get it, tough luck

If someone that I knew wanted me to stake them I would laugh in their face. I'm guessing that somewhere on the scale of rejection there is something less rude than laughing at them that still gets the point across. Perhaps saying "no" would work.

Afraid to find out just how good a friend he is, huh? Especially since you'd be giving him his reality check/wake up call.

Tell him that you don't want to let something like money ruin your friendship if the stupid donks on party suckout on him over and over again.

You think he'll take it personally surf? There aren't many people I would stake for that much $, especially if they play a volatile style. You gave him 500 already, let him get the money from somewhere else and build up again to regain the grinder mentality. Just say you aren't comfortable lending that much $, end of story.

I would suggest almost any of the responses in this thread.

It seems he's pretty irresponsible with money.
And regardless of his sick beats, he very possibly isn't a winning player anyway (your concern over the quality of his play at 1/2).

He sounds like a super steamer/tilter.

Copy and paste your original post.
Copy all the other quotes in this thread (including just laughing at him).
Something like, "$5k dude?!? No way. Can't do it. Not comfortable at all and your discipline has been a bit lacking lately so I'm not sure you would successfully grind your way back."

I suspect you might lose a friend over this since you seem to be feeling some pressure. But that leads one to wonder how good a friend he really is.
I would hope that my friends would remain my friends if I had to turn them down for such an offer (although I really don't have any close friends who are poker players)

Tell him you'll give him the money in exchange for sexual favors. If he hopefully refuses, no cash. If he agrees, tell him he's a sick bastard and you refuse to pay for that sort of thing. Personally, if I had the 5k just sitting around and this was a good friend, I'd give it to him. I'd make it clear that I wanted to be paid back within a certain time frame and suggest he tighten up his game a little. If you really don't want to loan him the money, just say no or come up with some mysterious huge bill and whine about not having any cash.

Stake him, play against him and win your money back from him as he donks it off playing every hand. Then you A) Staked your friend, B) Still have your money, and C) He owes you. A +EV situation.

It really doesn't get any more simple than this.

You could however, try mixing it up with "I do not want to stake you." or maybe even " I would rather not stake you."

How about going all Yoda on him and saying "Stake you I will not." Kidding. Seriously though, I would just let him know you don't want to risk other people's money, especially when they are friends. If you're a good player and feeling generous maybe you could give him some pointers so he could play on his own? If he says no to that, he's just plain lazy.

One way to avoid this problem is to simply stake me instead for the $5k since I'm not your friend. Now both problems are solved!

Surf,

You're a pretty level-headed guy. You should know that the only way that this can end amicably is if you simply tell him "hey i'm not comfortable staking you." He may react strange at first, but if he's not willing to separate business and friends, then he's not a friend.

Re: How Do I Tell my friend I DO NOT Want to stake him

He's not going to fully forgive you for this. If it's a casual friend, then, like others said, just say no. If it's a closer friend, lie. Say you're not staking anyone anymore. If you need a reason, it's because you've lost too much through staking in the past. Then be much quieter about your gambling finances in the future.

If it's a really close friend, then it goes back to simply saying no again, and giving your reasons.
