Sup Scandinavians
Soon I will have 3 months to burn, and I want to just chill in a nice spot some where in Scandinavia. All I really need is a place with some decent net cafes. I only speak English. If I find it sucks I'll just go some where else in the world.
So, where's the awesomest place? |
Re: Sup Scandinavians
One more try
Pretty please? |
Re: Sup Scandinavians
I have no clue about net cafes in Finland. I think Helsinki has some but I dunno. Sorry can't help really :/
|
Re: Sup Scandinavians
Don't go to Finland. Supposedly it's not a part of Scandinavia.

One more try Pretty please? [/ QUOTE ] somewhere there is a scandanavian poker message board with players that make even more money than 2+2er's. perhaps you should try there. |
Re: Sup Scandinavians
Reykjavik, Iceland has plenty of coffess houses and other spots with free WI-FI. There is other stuff to see and do but you run out of touristy things to do in about two weeks. The cons are it is very expensive here and three months in the middle of Fall/Winter is pretty dark and miserable. PM me if you want more info.

We are closing on autumn/winter
Stay the hell away. Come back in June. |
Re: Sup Scandinavians
Norway
Pros -Extremely nice nature, if you are into hiking etc this is the place to be -Good nightlife in the "major" cities (Oslo, Trondheim, Bergen) -Good looking girls -Many many many good slopes for skiing, snowboarding etc Cons -Not very many net cafes in other cities than Oslo -VERY expensive (hi $25 for a pizza) -Crappy weather during the fall -It's a small country, so there's not much of a lot -Live poker is illegal -> no casinos And everyone younger than 50 speak english here (as they probably do in all of scandinavia) so that shouldn't be an issue really. |
Re: Sup Scandinavians
Swedn'
Pros: * Same as for Norway. * People are not nearly as retarded as norwegians. * Stockholm is great * People are friendly and helpful (albeit not very eazy going) * The average BMI is about half that of Indiana. * You don't tip anyone... evear (Seriously!, your bartender makes more money than you do) Cons * People are more melodramatic than Norwegians * People who hangs at cafés dont like Americans (seriously, they don't, but pretend to be English/Austrailian and you'll get laied nearly everytime (Swedish chicks will put up, and they bend over backwards for anyone with a cute accent)). All in all, you'll have a great time wherever you go to in Scandinavia. You will notice it's a bit harder to make contact with people, but when you do, it is not as shallow as a brief aquintence in North America. Just rememer; when you say "how do you do" to a Swede... he will tell you how he is doing, because that's the way we are. -Pre-edit... I think the spelling in this post is that of a 7 year old... I'll spell check next time *promise*- |
Re: Sup Scandinavians
wow, Sweden sounds pretty awesome from that blurb
The cons aren't so bad, I'm ok with some melodrama, and I'm an Aussie (sort of). I'm sold Sweden here I come! edit: wait is there any good skiing in Sweden? if not it looks like a close tossup between Sweden and Norway |
Re: Sup Scandinavians
Sweden is nice, booze is very expensive. People go to Copenhagen to party.

Re: Sup Scandinavians
Sweden is great - my kids live there so I am over there about 6 times a year (so probably have been 35 times in the last 4 years) - Women are insane looking, everyone speaks English under 50, and did I mention women are insane looking - however I would leave NOW if I was you - it is a great and wondeful place in the summer (wsa there last week) - in the winter it kinda sucks as the days are very, very short and it is COLD (I am normally in Mid-Nothern Sweden so it is a little more extreme in the swings than somewhere like Stockholm or Gottenberg).....Enjoy (and the women are insane, and easy!)
PS. My only con in Sweden is everyone, and mean everyone is Tall - I am 6"1' and in Canada I am generally a pretty big guy, at a club in Stockholm all I see other peoples shoulders, serously they grow them big over there..... |
Re: Sup Scandinavians

[/ QUOTE ] Finland is and is not part of the Scandinavia: [ QUOTE ] Scandinavia is a region in Northern Europe named after the Scandinavian Peninsula [citation needed]. The original and most common definition includes the tree countries, continental Denmark, mainland Norway and Sweden. Sometimes Finland is included, even in official contexts [1], although since the rise of Scandinavism in 1850s, this inclusion divides opinions in all of the respective states. * In the English language, "Scandinavia" is often used as a synonym for the Nordic countries. * In Denmark, Sweden and Norway, Finland is usually not counted as a part of Scandinavia. The usage and meaning of the term outside Scandinavia is somewhat ambiguous: * From a German point of view, Norway, Sweden and Finland are usually included, but Denmark is not. * From a British point of view, Norway, Sweden, and Denmark are usually included, often with the addition of Iceland and Finland. [/ QUOTE ] Go figure. Finn |

I think Denmark might be the best choice. Very friendly people. But if you want to see nice nature Norway is best, but people are a not as open in Norway as in Denmark. Why don't you try a little bit of each country and make up your own mind? BTW i am from Norway.. |

[/ QUOTE ] ^^ There is a lot of truth to this statement, Copenhagen is a great place to party, and the nature in Norway is amazing. As for the skiing, I think it's a tossup between Sweden and Norway. But I only been skiing in Norway once so maybe someone who is more into it would have a different opinion. Good Swedish resorts are Åre and Treriksröset. |
Re: Sup Scandinavians
All of scandinavia is worth visiting
|
Re: Sup Scandinavians
Theres alot of places to skii here, i think Åre is the most famous one. And it's really good skiing/boarding and the afterski is great.

Another great place is Levi in Lapland (Finland). I've been to both of these places and the nightlife is awesome. |
Re: Sup Scandinavians
i went to copenhagen for the ept in january. i got knocked out the first day.. after that i didn't go to sleep until the sun was up every morning. defintely an awesome place to party. and i don't know if it's like this in all of scandanavia but i'd say 8/10 women are hot in copenhagen.

Re: Sup Scandinavians
I'm from Norway, but Denmark is def the best country in Scandinavia to have a good time. Danish people are very easy going and non-judgemental, + the girls are hot there too (like they are here). Denmark is also the cheapest country in Scandinavia I believe, while Norway is the most expensive. If you want to ski, you have to go with Norway or Sweden though.

Re: Sup Scandinavians
How are Norwegians retarded? I loved my trip to Norway. Iceland was nice too, but I enjoyed Norway a lot more. The food was way better and the people were more apt to talk to me.
That, and Norwegian women are FAR underrated. |
Re: Sup Scandinavians
Long story short, think of them a bit like the canadians of Scandinavia. But the truth is we love them just the way they are.
Norway/norwegians are great, don't let anyone (least me) fool you. |
Re: Sup Scandinavians
Thanks again everyone
Today I'm booking a plane ticket to Sweden. I'll prolly stay for a month or so then do the same in Norway and Finland, and also maybe Iceland, they all sound like cool places. |

Re: Sup Scandinavians
ok so I'm in Stokholm now, and so far it looks really nice. And indeed the women here are very hot, about every 20 seconds walking around the city I do a hot-woman-double-take. Sometimes triple.
But, I've maxed out my credit card, and I can't figure out how to get money from my Australian bank account to my hands, which kind of sucks. I'm about 20 hours away from being homeless. Any one in Stokholm interested in recieving some UB money for cash in hand? about $2000 US worth would be good, but I'll take what I can get. I can also netbank (as in electronic transfer of money from my bank account to your bank account) some money to some one for cash in hand. Either way I'm willing to pay say $200 US extra for the favour. If some one's interested, can you post up or pm me a meeting place tommorow? I'll transfer money to you in front of your eyes at a net cafe if you want. I will check this post again at about 8:30 am Stokholm and confirm/deny any offers. A suggested meeting place is required. I can get myself to anywhere near T-Centralen(central station). If that falls through, I'm gonna have to try out the freegan lifestyle. I have a few questions in regards to this: Can I just sleep in a park during the day? I plan to sleep in a park during the day cause it looks less bum-ish and less likely I'll be harrassed by whoever. Good idea? Also, I heard the internet is free at some libraries. Is this true? Any of those near centralstaion? For food, I plan to go to a food court in a mall some where and wait till people finish their meals, then swoop in and eat what's left. Wish me luck all! |
Re: Sup Scandinavians
Yikes, sounds like you went to Sweden seriously under-funded. Just walk into a bank anywhere and explain your predicament. Explain that you really need to do an emergency fund transfer from your Aussie bank account. I'm sure they'll charge you extra for making it double fast, but at least that way you'll have some money in your hands pronto. Another alternative would be to head out to the Australian embassy and explain your predicament (though you might want to lie and say you lost your wallet with all the cash). They can probably help you out with arranging for a money transfer and what-not.
If all else fails I can always ask my mom if she'll let you crash at her place. She's a great cook! Swede |
Re: Sup Scandinavians
hmm, yeah I walked into a bank today and asked if there was any way possible to get money from my oz bank account somehow, but they said no.
The Australian embassy is probably a good idea though. And I'd like to say preemptively, yes I'm and idiot for ending up in this situation |
Re: Sup Scandinavians
Have you tried using your credit card in an ATM? pretty sure it works.
If you for some reason don't have a credit card, you can have someone in Australia send money through fedex. They're everywhere, (there is at least one at T-centralen), your parents or whom ever can deposit via the internet from a VISA-card. If you want free internet, you can go to a library (try the one at KTH, royal institute of technology), it's a 15 min walk from T-centralen. There are lots of students on campus right now so there should be someone who can help you one way or another. Also there are lots of parties going on since the freshmen just arrived. You might even be able to score a sofa somewhere. Good luck! |
Re: Sup Scandinavians
I think you're best bet is either going to the embassy or getting someone back home to send you money through Western Union or similar.
If you're really desperate you could probably eat at Stadsmissionen (homeless outreach center) at Stadsgården 22 116 45 STOCKHOLM (Slussen underground station) where you can get a hot meal between 11.30-13.30 and a sandwich and coffee at other times. |
Re: Sup Scandinavians
Thanks for all the info guys. Lucky for me I managed to free up some credit on my credit card last night, so I should be right for a week or two, but I will probably need some one back on Australia to send me money eventually anyway, so that info is very helpful. Also, thanks for the offer swede123
So far, Sweden is awesome. That is all. |
Re: Sup Scandinavians
HP,
if there is a time constraint, Finland is by FAR the country I would drop from your list. Denmark is infinitely preferrable. Finnish girls are, sad to say it, not in the same league as the girls in the rest of Scandinavia. Are you into nature/skiing? If so: - Definitely go to Iceland, you won't regret it. Hot springs, volcanos, snow all over. Very very nice, and a healthy party life in Reykjavik. Not sure about net cafes, don't think that'll be a problem though. - If you're really, really really into nature: Take a plane to Svalbard, a small island north of Norway. You have to like snow though, it's a cold place. Ice kayaking, sleighing with a pack of dogs across the polar ice, whale watching, polar bears and other animals, glacier hiking, skiing and so forth. Never been there myself yet unfortunately, but a friend of mine has been there several times and can't say enough good things about it. Warning: kind of expensive though, and probably poor on the net front. Worth it for say a week or so if you're into nature though. Also, I think you would have far fewer troubles with the funding in Norway, Sweden sucks. Haha. Feel free to PM me your questions about Norway in general (I live in Trondheim). |

Re: Sup Scandinavians
I can't belive I typed "fedex" It must have been before coffee. Of course I meant "Forex" *sorry* And I checked, there are two of them at T-centralen.
I have used them to send money, it works well and it's pretty fast. Go to www.forex.se (click english), then services>money transfer>moneygram or go talk to them about how moneygram works. Perhaps you can just go to www.moneygram.com directly, I checked it and they have partners in ozzyland too. Cheers /daniel |
