High Stakes Poker -- January 23

This may be my last week watching this. Can we have more commercial breaks? Here in Canada there were at least 4 in the first half-hour.

"Doyle flops the wheel...Naseri has Aces...what will happen?"

"Do you have erectile dysfunction? Is your nickname at the gym 'droopy'?..."

Frickin' killing me.

I agree about the commercials, it almost makes it unwatchable. At least finish the hand before cutting to commercial. The people watching this show aren't changing the channel.

I'll probably just start DVR'ing it instead of watching it live so I can skip past the commercials.

Yeah, TF is flat pimp.

The announcer dude is pretty much a crotch though.

Mr. Kotter has some good insight now and then but he's getting old pretty quickly too.

In tonight's episode Doyle and Ted were playing a pot and Doyle bluffed on the end and was called. I thought he then said "Good call. I know I shouldn't bluff against Ted", or something to that effect. But the announcers claimed he said "I know I shouldn't bluff agains an idiot", and then Kotter went on for a while about how these guys were great friends and the "idiot" comment was all in good fun.

I think this is the best live poker I've ever seen on TV. I'm sick of nothing-but-all-in hands from tournament play, plus most of the amateur donkeys that luckbox into final tables. Almost everyone here is a brilliant, brilliant poker mind and I like seeing how they think. Since I DVR it, I don't notice the commercials. I just see lots of fascinating hands and learn a ton about strategy for NL cash games. What's not to like?

Best poker on TV. Its not even close. Ill never be able to watch another WPT all in fest after watching those 2 episodes tonight(on DVR).

Ted Forest is a straight pimp. I thought Ted was donking it up making a move on Barry with that KQx board and Barry had 99. Funny how you can be a donkey or a genius based on your opponnets fold/call.

This guy is the absolute pits. And I really like Gabe Kaplan.

Why on Earth would anyone employ AJ Benza for any reason, much less poker commentary?

Re: High Stakes Poker -- January 23

First of all, yes, this is the best poker on television, and it's not even close. The only way to make it the Undisputed World Champeen is to make it a mixed a game. I don't think I'd ever leave the house.

Second, A.J. Benza needs to go do something else. ANYTHING else.

Third, don't say anything bad about Gabe Kaplan. He is as knowledgeable and personable as any poker commentator out there. If you say anything bad about him, you will be forced to watch old WSOP episodes from back in the senior Van Patten days, Clockwork Orange Style.

Lastly, if you play poker and cannot afford DVR, you deserve to suffer through the commercials.

Call it the rake.

Well Ditto the whole "this is the best show" stuff....

1. Did AJ Dickweed call Jerry Buss "Dr. Jerry Buss" in the opening segement? They had just finished talking about Dr. Amir Nasseri....What a tool.

2. In the Brick & Morter forum there is this thread. Seems ted forrest has a stack of red birds for tipping. usually $5 per win. I didn't see anyone else tip the dealer.

I think he does a pretty good job compared to most others, he just gets a little weak tight at times. He seems to think everything is a scary board unless its J62 rainbow.

Re: High Stakes Poker -- January 23

Kaplan had a 2nd at WSOP this year, a 7th at the main event in '80 and a 2nd in WPT during '04. The man has been an integrated part of the community for over 25 years, knows everyone and has a professional-type resume himself. If you want to slam his sense of humor or the like, so be it, but stop knocking his credentials, you're being an ass.

As I said in my post, Kaplan is about the best out there, IMHO.

Referring to him like he's a donk merely makes one appear to be a donk oneself.

Re: High Stakes Poker -- January 23

The last hand was interesting. Obviously we don't know the metagame issues, but QQ against a threebet for more than 100BB is like always worth at least considering a fold no matter which player you're up against, and Doyle seemed very solid in the shown hands. I guess Barry knows that Doyle knows that Barry's fairly likely to threebet light there, and like someone said, Barry seems very aggro preflop, more so than any other at the table. I wonder how the hand would ahve progressed if Doyle had JJ there.

I couldn't agree more. I taped the first two on Windows Media Center, and after fast forwarding through the commercials, only about 25-30 minutes had passed from starting to finishing watching. I think there were only about 6-7 hands played out in the first episode -- it was fun to watch, but disappointing in that regard.

Yeah, but then he started putting on the pounds. Now his head is as big as Rush Limbaugh's. He also looks like he had a mini-stroke. When he talks, one side of his mouth droops--probably from excessive fellating of people like Chuck Zito.

I agree - I enjoyed listening to the players talk about the game and a little trash talking, but AJ kept blabbering on over them to the point you couldn't understand what was being said at the table.

That being said, this is the best poker on TV.

Ahem, actually the most at stake is $500K. Clearly you would do a much better job though. You would have degraded the owner of the LA Lakers by calling him Mr. instead of Dr. But hey, you got closer on this one! Kaplan thinks $1.5 MM is at stake, and you say it's $1MM, when it's actually $500K! You get closer so you win!

And by the way, I'm pretty certain that Kaplan was playing up to the casual observer by saying 1.5M. Not everybody out there is aware of Mahatma and his $200K internet cash pots.

After about the fourth episode, let's hope Kaplan nixes the overhyping of what is at stake. Doubtful, but we can hope.

he also said jennifer harman had to overbet the pot on the turn because otherwise a flush draw might call.
And (as someone already said) could they please stfu about how much you could buy with the pot?

Re: High Stakes Poker -- January 23

One thing I don't like is the real cash on the table. That's obviously just done to please the TV producers and make it look 'exciting'.

In the first hand in ep. 2, Jennifer Harlan takes a bundle of cash and says "What's that? 10?"

I'm probably a nerd but I think it's way cooler the way they take two 25K chips out of their pockets to buy in again...

It's definitely the best poker I've seen on TV though.

Have you ever been to the WSOP? The first time I went, I was amazed at the stacks of cash playing behind at even the 75-150 tables. At these limits, it is a bit obscene though.
